  8. Re:when will it end on Xbox-Exclusive Games a Growing Trend · · Score: 1

    What about games like Metroid Prime on the Gamecube which have *no* loading times whatsoever?

    The Gamecube trades storage space for loading speed, but you won't see very many cut scenes. The PS2 has abysmal loading times, for reasons I can't fathom.

    I haven't noticed any speed issues with saving since the Playstation.

    I've noticed plenty, especially on the PS2. GTAIII+VC are slow, as is Pro Evo, TH:UG and GT3. Also bear in mind that game saves are kept deliberately small in order to allow a reasonable amount to fit on the small memory cards, for example Halo can and will save enough data so that barely fits on the Xbox memory card, which is the same size as the other two consoles'.

    Ok, so I can have a billion saves. Thats nice, but what if I want to use my save at a friends house?

    You purchase a memory card just like on the other two consoles. The memory slots are in the controller, like the Dreamcast; this means you could have 8 memory units plugged in too if you wanted to.

    * amount of user-defined information

    Not exactly sure what you're talking about here.

    I think he means that you can save lots more personalised stats because you have no space issues.

    * downloaded content

    Ok that is kinda nice, but it's more of a perk than a "killer feature."

    It's under-utilised. PC games use this a lot though remember, all it would take would be for Bungie to release a level editor for Halo 2 and this would explode.

    * knowing that everyone has room for the save

    See number of saves above.

    I don't think you understand the point; it's not beyond the realms of imagination that Sony and Nintendo encourage their developers to be sparing with memory. No-one wants a reputation of a memory-card hog, a hidden tax that simply shouts 'should have offered/fitted a hard drive', on the other hand, Xbox developers are probably encouraged to allow players to personalize the game as much as possible and can use the space to provide some really high detailed saves that store much more information to make the gameworld more contiguous between sessions.

    * custom soundtracks

    Pretty much only good for FPS, racing, or Tony Hawk-style games. Otherwise I want to hear that great music on my Final Fantasy, Zelda, Mario, or Metroid games. Also whats stopping you from turning the BGM to 0 and using a cd player?

    Well, you've just dismissed the two most popular genres there, but ignoring that for a second, do you listen to that music away from the game? I'd prefer to listen to a thumping rock track in Metroid Prime personally, and the music in Mario Sunshine is bloody annoying. I'm not sure about your stereo but mine doesn't do mixing, so the CD player option requires me using the TV for sound effects. It's a lot nicer if I can just play tracks from the hard drive, especially given the surround options in modern games. I don't particularly like turn based fighting games so I can't comment on the music quality of Final Fantasy in particular, and I admit Zelda's music is quite nice, but quality original music in games is generally the exception rather than the norm these days, which is why so many games use tracks from recognised artists.

    The two things that my Gamecube and PS2 owning friends drool over when they finally get to experience them...the hard-drive, and of course Live.

    Internet gaming is an over-hyped feature. The majority of games available are single player only. Also I think most people would agree that they enjoy playing with their friends *in the same room* more than playing against someone you don't know on the other side of the country/world/galaxy. Don't get me started about cheater/griefers/fuckheads on the internet.

    Don't knock it til you've tried it. Notice all the hype i

    In Tony Hawk's games your scoring exponentially decreases for repeats of the same move, this could easily be applied to beat 'em ups to reduce the amount of damage taken by repeats of the same attack.

    Any cheating like this could easily be captured and worked around in playtesting, it's not like it's difficult to fix. It just smacks of lazy programming.

    I'm knocking netgear because mine, an ME102, went slowly tits up with every key change (it would take longer to restart and sometimes didn't acknowledge the change), and was never going to receive anything useful like an update for WPA security from Netgear. Now it just comes up with a boggled IP address and refuses to work. It was only configurable from a bespoke Windows app which is very hard to find on netgear's website (which is fairly typical from some of the middle tier hardware manufacturers).

    My next purchase was a Buffalo 11g unit which didn't seem to work properly at all but luckily I managed to take it back. I bought my AEBS originally simply because I knew it would work correctly with my Macs, and had backup dialup, MAC security and USB printer access, and had been burned twice trying to get a cheaper option. Now I'm glad I did anyway, as it's been flawlessly reliable and has received constant useful updates. I don't think there's any reason to get one if you don't need a print server or any of the associated stuff, but when I was buying mine 11g was quite new and the prices weren't radically different. Maybe if I was buying without experience now I'd probably settle for a cheaper one but I've never been anything except impressed with Apple kit and service and I'm quite happy to do it again even at a premium simply because I feel I get real value for money.

It certainly doesn't cost anywhere near that much to provide the service, and given that a fair proportion of games already have LAN capability, it's not that much of a stretch to extend the service on the programming side either.

    No, I just don't respond to trolls. Pure capitalism, which you're advocating here, doesn't work in respect to services that people don't want to pay for in the belief/hope/gamble that they might never need them. Any sane economist knows this, and taxes is the virtually ubiquitous method of solving it, unless you fancy socialism, where you'd never even be promised the money in the first place.

    If you're that upset about the perceived value you get from your tax expenditure then you should probably take it up with your local government official, or perhaps run yourself? You sound like you think you know how to get everything done at much lesser expense, so you shouldn't have any problem getting elected to office. Personally, I can see plenty of value for my tax 's and this is under a (marginally) more left wing government than we've had in the past in the UK.

    Either way I'd recommend reading up a bit about the mechanics of society, and the costs involved in providing services that you don't even see. I noticed you got marked as flamebait so perhaps people agree with me more than you?

    Not really, if you're richer then you'll definitely benefit more from policing as you're more likely to get burgled/mugged in the first place. You're more likely to drive yourself than use public transport, and you're more likely to do it in a gas guzzler, so why shouldn't you be taxed more? Your house will probably be bigger, and you're more likely to live in the suburbs, so providing fire coverage, refuse collection, etc. is costlier. I'd go on but this thread is dead now.
