Linux is a good choice for a supercomputing cluster? No shit sherlocks. This isn't front page news, it's barely news at all. No wonder readership figures are declining.
This is lame, this isn't even interesting, I assume slashdot is being paid for this product placement? I've a mind to join these people and find a site that has actual news, instead of this crappy engadget clone that slashdot has now become.
Loads of people in this thread think they know enough to not even read the fucking article. Not that it's a particularly interesting story as such, but at least know whereof you speak. No wonder this is happening.
As if this is even news. If they're only now looking for people, expect something in 2-3 years if they decide it's worthwhile. Maybe then Linux will have done enough to validly compete with Windows and Linux on the desktop. Maybe not.
But on the other hand, the hardware is a fixed target, and in general faster than the quickest console around, the Xbox, so perhaps there is much more scope for optimisation?
Also with respect, Macs are not overpriced, this has been argued many times here in the past. It's only overpriced if you don't pay for your software on x86.
Just how quick is SD flash anyway? Would real USB2.0 make any difference? IME it's pretty slow, but that could be down to the devices I've used. Better to use a mini HD surely.
You so miss the point of great hardware. I hope you're happy with your overpriced Windows computer. Maybe you can browse Slashdot a few microseconds quicker?
Observing these market share figures as a University graduate, it's interesting to see that the proportion of people who use Windows is very similar to the proportion of people who are less qualified than myself ^_~
I'm all for freedom of choice but isn't the sheer number here overwhelming evidence of just how pointless the cycle method of graphics hardware has become? I'm continually amazed at just how much people are willing to blow time after time on a consumer component.
I tried the alternative versions of the OS and found them all pathetic. If 9 hours is good enough for you then that's great. If I have to charge my Clie more often than every two weeks then I've been playing too many games of pool.
Can't say the display is anything to write home about on them either. It's a bit too low a definition for my tastes personally. I don't really see what relevance storage has to be honest; if I can't pick up e-mail or log in to anything via ssh when I'm away from a network and reliant on gprs then its usefulness nosedives.
My Zaurus sits in a draw with its crap battery life the ultimate killer after the body blow of one substandard application after another (Hancom Office Suite and a lame version of Opera the main culprits).
The Sony Clie I purchased not too long in order that I could actually use the damn thing without having to charge it every other day, and which paid for itself by having a fully working bluetooth implementation that was only marginally more expensive than a supported (by third party projects) bluetooth expansion card itself, is miles better. Sadly they're discontinued, but I'd still buy a Palm machine over either of these, Linux or not.
Just because it's an electronic gadget that fits in your pocket does not mean that comparison is in any way valid. The whole point with the success of portable audio is that you can use it while doing something else. It's worth the effort because you can use it when you want.
Video gadgets require attention, and the price of low battery life or just plain high price leads to failure to adopt or abandonment. The Gameboy established itself because it had excellent battery life and a low price. I can't see these doing much of either.
I personally prefer them to whatever gigabling spec PC you can get anyway. TV's make a resolution like 640x480 look good, and my TV is bigger than any monitor I'll be able to afford in my lifetime.
Plus there are way more interesting genres and games on consoles IMO.

Another Star Wars story so slashdotters can complain about how Lucas raped their childhood. Is it any wonder this is happening?
Just stick with OS X. It's clearly superior unless your brain is strangled by wanting to be a part of the retarded 'free or death' zealot syndicate.
Later, dickwads.
Lean and stupid more like am i rite.
I don't believe a word of it.
If they went after someone other than EA in the first round.
Doesn't offer the subtlety of a joypad. If it did, the trackpad wouldn't have been invented ;)

It's not dual layer. It was mentioned in the runup but didn't happen.

However IA-64 code doesn't really share much in common with x86-64....

Any relation to Britney Spears? Maybe a less well off relative perhaps?

Because no-one has a TV right?
