You graduated from college knowing everything about software development and database administration did you? Or just maybe did you actually have to learn some things as you went along like every other mortal on the planet because you didn't know it all?
I work at a company that provides GPS to trucking firms to track their fleets, and I can reliably tell you that coverage is not 100%. Monday was particularly terrible for some reason.
Is there any particular reason people would choose to use the command line only unless they are working on a really low end machine?
I don't know about anyone else but I sit at my Linux box for about five hours a day at work and that would give me a serious headache by the end of the day.
For some reason, teachers and admin automatically assume that they need at least local admin rights if not network admin rights. And half of them shouldn't go near the control panel in the first place. The only good thing is that most academic boxes are Windows... the thought of one of that lot with root access... *shudder*
I think he started the Gates Foundation because he is a good man by any standards except those in the IT profession. To most he can be considered a hero and rightfully so in my opinion.
I would hope that judges remember this and act accordingly. Cash only next time. I'm starting to think the RIAA may be the most evil organisation on the planet - even Microsoft didn't offload junk for their settlement.
In all seriousness, that might be the only way to get the RIAA/MPAA to stop attacking our rights. When their executives start getting shot and patriots claim reponsibility, then they might listen.
Setting stuff up should be hard so that you don't make changes on a whim. That way most users understand what they are changing and the consequences of it.
That attitude makes my blood boil. I use SuSE, and the reason I use SuSE is because YaST lets me set up things easily (in most cases). xinetd for example. I know how to configure it manually but why the hell would I want to?
I'm not a clueless user. I'm a professional programmer and things that make me more productive are good. My boss isn't impressed if I spend hours simply configuring a program.
Whatever you do, don't persecute the Linux or Mac OS users because they can't install whatever Windows only software you end up going for. It's the Windows users 99.99999% of the time that cause the problem.
Ok, spammers don't have as much distributed processing power as a group like SETI does, but they still have a lot. All from stupid Windows users that don't use a firewall and click yes to everything they see.
My network admin has everything blocked except port 80, didn't allow ANY downloads except text files (it took me two days to explain that RPMs were fuck all use to anyone else in the network, since my coworker and I are the only two Linux developers and we needed them for our job), and has a truely restrictive windows policy (happily he's windows only and hasn't the faintest idea of how to lock down our Linux boxes. The fact that we didn't give him our root passwords might have something to do with it too.;)
People speeding are a danger to other road users - it seems obvious to me that there should be a law to discourage some maniac from crashing into your car at 100Mph.
KDE is perfect for my needs. I can find my files quickly and they display in a logical order. I hated the new window popping up in Windows 95, I'm not about to start liking it now.
I'm an unusual geek. I don't want a PDA or palmtop computer. If I had one I could use the time on the train I spend travelling to get to work. Fuck that - I write software for eight hours a day and I enjoy an hour reading a book and listening to music travelling each way. So no, they can shove devices that make me work more.:)
If you want to write web applications with a minimum of fuss, then yes. Personally I consider it lightweight Java, and in fact PHP 5 is implementing most of it's OOP features in the same way that Java does. Obviously doesn't have the same power but you don't always need a full programming language to get a job done.

Sorry, just couldn't resist...

Let's be a little more sensible and teach them BASH commands, far more useful.
They could stop being evil for a start. Those sessions in the boardroom that end with Bill Gates going "Bwahahahah" really have to stop.
Screw Unisys and screw the horse they rode in on. They've burned their bridges.

I say boycott ZD until they stop smoking crack.

I would hate to be one of the RIAA executives or lawyers the next time they need some dental work done.
Never ever fuck with people who provide YOU with essential services. It will come back to haunt you in the end.
That someone can become a soldier at 16. So, you are old enough to kill and/or die for your country but not old enough to vote?
That would be why my boss asked me to write a software system in it that will power the products of the entire company? Nope, try again.

Seems a little pricey. I'd rather use SuSE for easy installation, YaST2 is very good.

Ten years for a glorified accounting and payroll system? That's just insane!
