Really, have you played the first game? It would not be easier and cheaper because the Wii controller is not desgined for that sort of functionality. It would be like taking a game that was designed specificially for the wiimote and trying to play it with an Xbox controller. That's as bad as the idea you are coming up with. And yes, having notes coming out of the Wii-mote would be a terrible terrible idea. Guitar Hero makes you feel like you are playing the song live. Having dinky little notes coming out of the controller would make you feel like you were playing on something made by Fisher Price.

They can be on any console. What you want is innovative games. You should be looking at the game companies for this, not the consoles. If people didn't care about graphics, then we would still be playing on 8-bit consoles. Nintendo is the one who essentially invented this console arms race by coming out with a more powerful system each cycle. I agree with you that the Wii could be just as hardcore as any other system...this deals with game, not console. You are going to get innovation by default with the Wii because of the different way to control things. But innovation doesn't mean it will be a good game. I don't care if it is a rehashed genre like an RPG or FPS, as long as it is a good game, I will play it and have a good time. You people are way too addicted to innovation. There will never be as much innovation as when gaming was new. There will always be some though. Most of them will be crap, but a few will be GOOD GAMES and they will become another gaming staple. The things these games have in common is that they are good. So to respond to your rant: I DONT GIVE A FLYING FUCK ABOUT INNOVATION. INNOVATION DOES NOT MAKE IT GOOD. I would expect a PC gamer would understand this. To get the full potential of a game, you have to spend $$$ ever so often as games get more complex. Or, you can just use your current hardware at lower settings.

But someone says something positive about the Wii and bashes the PS3 and 360, and it get modded up. Please, this is just as much flamebait as the people who say that Nintendo is for children.

The Wii is a console. It isn't hardcore. Not is it casual. The games it will have on it will cater to both these crowds. To choose casual gaming, you would select games on any platform that are more casual. From what I have seen, there are just as many hardcore games on the Wii as on other platforms. Same with casual games (though, a lot of the 360 casual games are pulled down from the Xbox live arcade service).

I am tired of the rampant stupidity on slashdot. The fanboyism of Nintendo and Apple has to be beaten down. If Apple or Nintendo took over the market, they would be just like MS and Sony. Yet you would blindly follow them down that road. Be happy that there is competition. If there wasn't, I doubt Nintendo would have been forced to innovate. We would still be playing non-epic games on cartridge media.

Really, I hope the Wii does well. I hope the 360 and PS3 do too. But look at your comments, you can get golf games on any console. Maybe you enjoy the Wii controls of golf. Maybe you feel it would make you look stupid. But there is nothing inherently casual about the Wii.

Uh, no, give me Guitar Hero 2...and 3, and 4. Guitar hero is a great game...even if they do everything the same and just release new songs people would buy it. But they are adding new depth to it (e.g. allowing a second player to play the bass line). You have the same misconception that a lot of Slashdotters have...that is, you think innovation means great games. If this were true, there would be a lot less risk to innovate and everyone would be doing it. The problem is that a lot of innovative games are no fun and they don't get played. Guitar Hero was innovative and good. They have earned the right to make more of them because that is what people want. You are assuming that they could come up with something new if they weren't working on Guitar Hero 2. Maybe...but probably not. If your favorite sci fi writer decided to write another sci fi novel...you don't complain that they aren't writing a romance novel. Let them do what they are good and passionate about...and that is the best chance we have at getting more good games in the future.

There will never ever be a time again where games are as innovative as they were in the time of atari and the 8-bit Nintendo. That's because there was nothing to do but innovate. Now a lot of space has been explored. People are going to make the game people want (the standard genres). And every year we will get a few innovative games that will define new genres. The only difference is how we interact with this game. The Wii is the first step. If they succeed, I predict a lot of companies will look at how to redefine how we interact with games. They will still be the same genres, but how we play these games will evolve.

As far as Madden goes...EA makes games that people want. If they weren't making these games, someone else would. It is stupid to complain about them. Just because you don't see why someone wants to buy a new version of the same old thing doesn't mean there aren't millions of people out there who can't wait.

This IS a golden age for gaming. More people are playing than ever before. There are more types of games with new ones coming out every year. We have three consoles and a PC to choose from. We have one console that is redefining how we interact with games. I think the problem is most people here are adults now. Games don't hold the same magic as when we were a kid. This is not a problem with the games, this is a problem with us. Do you get as excited now about seeing an airplane as you did when you were young? Of course not. Are you complaining that there just isn't any innovation in the aviation industry?

Comparing downloading old 8 bit games for 5 bucks to downloading XBox games from the previous generation is probably the dumbest thing I have read for awhile. Can you download gamecube games for $5? That's the true comparison. If it wasn't for XBox, you wouldn't even be getting this service. It took the XBox to wake Nintendo up to the fact that people are ready for their consoles to be online.

You guys are like a bunch of crooked politicians putting positive spin on things that can not be put in a positive light. Like saying "collateral damage" instead of "killed innocent civilians". Having the worst graphics of the generation is not a positive thing. It does not mean more of a focus on quality games. You guys have said this so many times you actually believe it. The console is just a box of potential. The games are where you get your gameplay. I have no doubt that Nintendo (the software sector of the company) will make fun games. But that has very little to do with the console having the worst specs on the market. The only way this argument can slightly hold is if it makes the Nintendo easier to program for than the other two consoles. I am sure we will find out soon what the devs think.

Is this a game console for everyone? No, not really. It has the potential to reach some new markets depending on the games...but it still has to she it's kiddy image. It's hard to see Dick Cheny playing with the Wii.

What Nintendo has really realized is that they can sell their consoles for a profit if they give up trying to be cutting edge. It's a good position to be in. It makes them look like the good guys when they are actually profiting more off you than MS or Sony.

Nintendo stands a better chance this round than the last one, no doubt. But really, try to tone down the fanboyism.

Seriously...a lot of people consider gaming a niche market in general. Now PC's are a niche market compared to consoles?

Let me break it down slowly for all these game "journalists". There are certain types of games that are better on PCs. These tend to be games that require more complexity than what you can play with a controller. I would not want to play Civ IV on a console controller, for example. These games are very popular. As long as there are people who are willing to buy these games, there will be making games for the PC. I don't care if it is more complicated to make games for the PC than a console. If there is profit to be had, there will be companies there providing that product. Neither PC or console gaming will die in forseeable future. Nor is one going to become a "niche" market. Certain types of games will be developed on the platform they are best suited for and people will buy them.

You may have a personal opinion how one is better than the other...but your personal opinion does not matter. There are plenty of people on both sides of the fence or who straddle it that will buy these games. PC gaming is fine.

Part of me can't help to think this whole thing is silly though. What do they think consoles are? Some strange and totally different piece of hardware? No, it's just a computer that has standard hardware. Really, everything is PC gaming...just need to slap a usable OS, some office products, and e-mail on there and there really isn't much of a difference. Really, we are just one step away of combining console and PC gaming and having a system that can act as a PC, DVR, gaming system, home environment control, etc etc.

If they just sold the game for an initial price, the game would not be able to afford the massive amount of hardware, bandwidth, customer support, etc. Additionally, you are getting new content added every few months. You have to pay the developers. Subscription based games will never go away. It's fine if you don't want to spend the 15 a month...but...it isn't very expensive. Considering the game pretty much consumes your free time...it actually saves a typical gamer money since they don't need to buy any other games. People spend 100s a month for cable/internet. I don't know...I am just unable to get excited about this like others. So you get to do gestures to make spiderman shoot his web, or you have to swing every time you want Wolverine to slash at a bad guy...it just doesn't seem like fun to me. Even if you are making your gestures small and efficient...you are still swinging (or wiggling) away a lot. It is easier to map those motions to a button. I am just worried a lot of the games on the Wii are going to make it too much of a gimmick. Controllers are excellent ways for humans to interface a game. In many cases, it is the way to go....and I think developers are going to have to learn that. I expcect a lot of the initial games will be too heavy on using the Wii controller for motions when a simple button push would do just as well.

While I think for a lot of games, I think it will be silly/pointless...there are some games that I think would be a lot of fun. For example, a tennis simulator (not just game) would be great. I know they used something like this as a demo. But being able to aim my shots, put different types of spin on the ball...that would be a lot of fun. I think this will be great for simulating a lot of different sports (mainly ones that use paddles or bats). It wouldn't translate as well for games like soccer and probably feel a little gimmicky for football (since throwing a football is a lot different than holding a stick and lobbing it to a teammate). Also, in sports, there is a lot of time between each action. You do something like play Wolverine, you are going to be flailing about constantly.

This is a large advantage because there will be many games exclusive to Nintendo. On the other hand, everyone will be trying to use the feature of the Wiimote when they aren't needed. I really don't need anything but a controller to have a great time with and rpg or a fighter.

So I am still skeptical about the Wii (man I hate that name). I really don't care about my appearance...but as a 28 year old, I really don't want to be flailing around like a moron in my living room. One of the big things I like about consoles is being able to recline on my couch. I can do this with a traditional controller..not so much with the Wii. I guess I will just have to wait and see if it can live up to all its hype by delivering games I would enjoy playing.

Nintendo can not jump to first for many reasons. They still have the kiddy image. Their control scheme may turn out to just be gimmicky (I know, people said the same thing about the DS and it worked out, but still could be true for the Wii). Have no idea what kind of hardware issues they will have. Have no idea how they will treat their third party producers (this is one thing that has damaged them a lot in the past). It has a horrible horrible name (nitpicking here). There are tons of little variables that you could factor in that will make them come out 2nd or even third.

Obviously, they have some big advantages: being unique, being much cheaper, and having a good lineup of release games (even if all of them will not have Internet capabilities). But to declare them victors is daft at this point. Slashdot is horribly biased towards Nintendo. There is a whole rest of the world out there and we will just have to wait and see what happens.

I play both PC and console, and really don't have any sort of bias because I like both. The difference between the two is more about how I want to interact with the game. If the game has simple controls, then they are great for a console. If they are more complex, they are better for a PC. Now hold up, I know you mentioned that consoles will have (in fact already do) setups to have a keyboard and mouse. That's fine, but my console is set up to my TV. My TV is all about comfort. Soft reclining couches facing a big screen tv. I do not want to have a Keyboard/mouse setup because there is no comfortable way to use that in my living room. It would be just as weird to me to hook up a controller to my PC and sit at a desk a few feet away from the screen. So even if I have those options, I won't take them. PCs will always be superior to consoles for FPS's and RTS's and games like civ IV for this reason. I'll enjoy RPGs more on a console because I can relax and enjoy the story. This is the main difference and this isn't going to change.

And as far as XBOX live and other console Inernet services...those come no where close to what you can get from the Internet. The only content patches you will get off of there is stuff that is released by the developer and they will charge you for it. The Internet offers so much more from the user community and it is free. Maybe if they opened it up to more free user developed mods...but currently it is not going in that direction.

PC and console gaming are alive and well and will be for a long time. They both have nice little niches to fill and nothing has come out or is coming out that leads me to believe this will change.
