  1. Re:Possible, but... on Games Better Than Books? · · Score: 1

"...they can never provide the kind of mind expansion that reading a lot of novels can."

Now, don't get me wrong--I love to read, and I write my own fiction/nonfiction as well. But, I have to wonder what you mean by this statement. What's your basis?

Games, by virtue, are what one might call an "ergodic" literature--this means that they require work in order to extract a result. While reading texts certainly has this aspect to some measure, television shows can be viewed as the real opposites of "ergodic." In fact, I recall reading an article that says our brains shut down after half an hour or so of watching T.V. as there's no real effort being exerted.

So, if you're insinuating that games are somehow the passtime of the lazy, I'm afraid I differ--there's actually more mental involvement than in books.

If I misunderstand your statement, please clarify.

Just taking a stab at this; I don't know Latin.

I suspect that the French for "thief" is probably derivative of the Latin for "winged" or "flight." I mean, think about what a thief does. Perhaps the way they "sneak" about to steal could be similar to flying (hard to catch, maybe?), or consider the fact they "fly" as fast as possible once an item is stolen. That said, I'm fairly certain I heard/read her say that it means winged. Either translation has interesting conotations, though.

One of us *could* pop over to one of the five billion fan sites to find out for sure; I'm personally far too lazy for that, though.

  17. Re:Totenkopf? on Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow! · · Score: 2, Interesting

Hey, I'm not sure if you noticed, but Totenkopf is THE BAD GUY. If you pull a name from history for a bad guy, it usually has negative conotations. I mean, what if the scientist was named "Dr. Rainbow." Not as convincing, is it? The kind of thing people would get pissed about would be having a hero named Himmler with blue eyes and blonde hair.

According to your view, lots of people should be pissed about Rowling having an antagonist named Voldemort (Winged Death, I think is the translation) with a lot of simliarities to Hitler (trying to wipe out a whole segment of people). Oh, and since this guy spent so much time on his computer, I'm fairly certain he did his research on the name and chose it for exactly those reasons.

  19. The REAL Reason We Have Better Graphics on Life After the Video Game Crash · · Score: 1

A point that people seem to miss so often, even if they are Original Gamers, is that graphics (and computing power in general) improved on game systems to allow new types of games. Zelda requires so much more than Pong. Today, that doesn't seem to be the case, and this guy more or less points that out (minus the motivation I mention above). There is little point in better graphics if it doesn't improve gameplay, and gameplay has been sucking over the last few years. Game companies today are so concerned about, as this guy mentions, "arm hair on football players" that they forget the that they are just recycling the same-old game experience.

I'm on Spring Break right now, and the funnest thing I've done with my time was to play through the first two Zelda games. They were easier than I remembered, but tons of fun. Oh, and just for nostalgia's sake, I played them on a 13" TV in the bedroom (just like when I was a kid).

  20. An Extreme Example... on Building Social Skills in Gifted Youths? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I met a high school kid a couple of years back who blew away any anti-social geek I've ever known. The /. crowd only *thinks* it's out of the social loop, but trust me, this kid has everyone here beat (the fact you come to this site at all makes you more social and recreational). To begin with, he read no fiction whatsoever. Only text books. High level math and physics. Neither science fiction nor fantasy appealed to him. I wish to god I could remember what he said about the /. site after I pointed him to it.

Anyway, I *tried* to get this kid into something that even the geek crowd would think was recreational, but nada. No music, no movies, no video games, no sports (assuming foozball counts as a sport). Sure, he's headed to Yale, and he knows assloads about engineering already (he could talk down to a master's student from GA Tech), but I can't imagine how lonely the guy may one day end up. It's *possible* that he'll meet a girl who'll fall in love with him for what he's like now, but his playing field is severely limited as such. And yes, I understand that his idea of recreation was the things he was into, but it isn't exactly common ground when it comes to finding friends. He basically reminds me of the guy from Sneakers who made robotic dogs, but more limited.

I finally decided that it wasn't my place to help this guy. That might be the case with the student in the article. I personally think that it'll take a psychologist/psychiatrist, and not the /. crowd, to really help this kid. You may have no idea why this kid is acting the way he is, so don't try to fix him. He's not an iPod mini. If you screw up and make things worse, it's a person, not a couple hundered bucks, that's lost.

I don't know much about Latin, and I know even less about Elvish, but I've read before that learning Latin can enhance your general mental capabilities (owing to it being such a heavily structured language). I've also read that learning any language can enhance one's general intelligence. Elvish offers a way in to an exercise that otherwise kids may avoid. In other words, the actual language doesn't really matter for the above situation, but I do feel it would be more beneficial to learn a real language instead. Perhaps Elvish could lead students to eventually tackle another language?
