Jeansonne was undone when cyber sleuths at Microsoft's MSN unit searched e-mail logs and found that the "Timmy" account had previously sent beta versions of the malware to Jeansonne's MSN TV account. Microsoft pillaged Jeansonne's e-mail, and found messages between him and an online friend that suggested Jeansonne was responsible for the hack. In December, the FBI raided his home and seized his computers.
So, with no warrent, or even police backing, microsoft took it upon themselves to read through the email of two of his accounts, one of which he was a paid subscriber for. Yeah, I'll believe M$ when they talk about privacy in the future. They then called the cops...is this shit even legal?!?
...hey, really, when you look at it all objectively...what a fantastically creative way to gain power...don't use force until it's a last resort, mess with the social structure of other countries, keep them depressed economically through war and social unrest, put in place dictators that won't allow the population to become educated etc, and that will allow america to grow big and strong on the global stage. You have to kind of admire it a little, from a strategists point of view.

"excuse me sir, I represent the 27 banks the currently back all major mutual funds that invest in your company and keep it afloat. We would like you to put this software in your product please"
Funny how the word voluntary seems to be changing of late.
open it up...then Micro$soft can start changing the specification on their OS (like they already have with other specification and tried with Java), and then, bang, there goes your platform independance. And hey, Sun invented java...and sunk a lot into it. Have singlehandedly revolutionized the computing industry with it. Bollocks to Eric Raymond, not everything is a crusade.

Depends on what you're paying for...if you see the purchase as paying for software, then yes, some of the prices are way out of the realm. However, people don't buy a mercedes for the ability to drive from place to place. Perceived value is very important. For instance, in the J2EE world, everyone knows that JBoss is a fantastic product, but IBM and BEA win the contracts...why...because it's worth the premium paid to be able to know exactly who you're dealing with. You pay the premium for the piece of mind and the strategic relationships, not the software.
By charging more, that company you speak of is defining it's unique selling position as quality at a premium...they won't get more business, but they will get a specific market segment that values that attribute.
I have had this functionality build into my shower for years...my shower is made of clear glass...but when I start having a shower, it goes opaque, or what I like to call "steamy"...once inside, I can switch the shower back to transparent by using what I like to call a "towel"
What's the IT climate like over there. I've been wanting to move to South America (from Australia) for about a year now. Have to finish my current project which is about another 18 month lock in, but was thinking of moving after that. I was originally thinking of brazil or venezuala...but am interested in any general information you can give me about your area.
ok, band camp story...I had a similar situation once...while reading through the agreement, it became obvious that the company wanted not only everything I ever thought up while in their employment (regardless or relevance or whether it was in work hours), but that they also expected 50-60hrs per week as 'the norm'...now, this was only implied as it's obviously not legal to come out with both of those statements. So, I asked them about it...straight out...I believe from memory it was even as blatent as "do you expect to own me for the period of time employed"...obviously I sugar coated with disclaimers either side of that question...but they appreciated my candor and basically answered 'yes'.
It was at this time I told them I had no problem signing the employment agreement right there and then....for triple what they were offering (which was already in the high end for our industry)...their jaws dropped and I walked...but hey, you only get one life, if someone wants to buy it away from you, make damn sure you get your moneys worth.
mod 5 browsing all says "don't do it"...for various reasons from getting sued to getting arrested for kiddie porn downloads. I have another don't for you...when you come up with a really cool, altruistic and geeky idea, don't post it to slashdot, it will get slammed.
correct, you can sign your own...and you can also sign OTHERS!...you can sign another company/organisation/group certificate with your certificate, and have them sign their employees/members with that certificate and vice verse...or they could sign their friends with theirs, and 'vouch' for their mates to you...slowly developing a ring of trust....you starting getting spam under on cert, look up the chain and contact the parent..."hey, you told me this guy was trusted...what's going on?...I'm pulling your certificate so neither me or my friends can talk...and I have 1000 friend groups" etc etc.....sounds like it would work to me (may be naive though:) )...anyone want to shoot holes in it?
And doesn't the first description of Ford say ginger hair? Not to be racist, but you don't see many black people with naturally ginger hair. Well done on the casting there, way to do exactly not a good job.
they already tried to cover it up after they were told about it...that kinda puts a hole or two in your theory...read the posts on mplayer site, it has info about changes after notification

going against the grain here...I quite like real player for linux...and their media format. Their media format has always been (in my humble view, and I'm just a viewer not a media expert) a good trade off between compactness and quality. I haven't used a windows system for years, so I can't really comment on the spyware stuff...however, for a long time it was almost impossible to play real files on linux...Real publishing a linux player was just one more nicety that made a full transition away from windows possible.
so hazah to the guys at real networks...well done you, I hope you get to read this post:)
...just make it play tic tac toe over and over again until it suddenly becomes aware that in the end, no one wins a war.
laugh...because I have 8 days to waste on a slashdot post

wow, you're kidding...and people sign up for this?! I remember yahoo tried a similar thing back in 1997 and almost got shut down from the backlash
