Time for a bit of karma burning...How the fuck you insensitive clods moderated that as troll??And fyi, nope the parent post did not say that...he was talking about speed which is a differnet matter rather than the one i described. You see SPEED is not HORSE POWER, or in other words PROCESSING POWER HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SPEED (at least not in the way the parent post was modded as informative).AFAIK the amount of instructions processed depends on how "fat" the instruction pipeline is. Having said that AMD designs the cpu's with fatter pipelines than the P4s, you have a LOWER CLOCKED CPU doing the WORKLOAD of a HIGHER RATED INTEL cpu. In other words "HORSEPOWER is not necessarily connected to SPEED"
I havent got a clue if anyone will read this post. I dont give a fuck to be honest. BUT DEFINATELLY MY PREVIOUS POST WAS NOT A FUCKIN TROLL...
Sorry to spoil your party mate but you're totally wrong. AMD's cpus are focused on a better efficiency on the instruction pipeline, i.e. they are designed in such manner that the processing of the instructions given to the microprocessor is up to three times more efficient when compared to a similar clocked Intel cpu. Therefore, when you compare/benchmark for example the Athlon XP 2500 (1.8 GHz) with an equally clocked P4 (1.8GHz), the AMD smokes the hell out of the P4 and its performance is similar to a higher rated P4 cpu (2.5GHz).
Thats it...i rest my case...Slashdotters who know nothing get modded by people who know nothing...
So, what stops you from installing the bootloader (Lilo,Grub, etc) to another source like a floppy or even creating a small partition at the beginning of the hard drive? As far as i can understand this has to do with overwritting the MBR of the disk, so by having the bootloader installed somewhere else (i.e. a bootable partition/floppy/cd) you leave the MBR "safe&sound" . Ok, you obviously have the hassle of using the media to boot, but i don't think that the average/.er uses the floppy that much...
Yes i remember in one of the first win98 setup screens it says " Sit Back And relax while windows 98 are installed to your computer"...Kinda funny cause i always used to say "sit back and relax, go for a walk, have a smoke, do whatever while windows 98 are taking over your computer"
It might be offtopic but i'd rather see the marbles of Parthenon back to where they belong rather than seeing a replica of a pile of oddly shaped/placed rocks. Have a look at http://www.parthenonuk.com/ and at http://www.uk.digiserve.com/mentor/marbles/index.h tm to see what i'm talking about.
Lovely, you got me covered, and to be honest i did not mean to be that critical...I just got sick of reading so many un-educated/irrelevant posts, and even watching films like Tomb Rider 2 stretching the truth so badly. It is a fact that besides Plato's writtings there is merely no evidence about the existance of Atlantis whatsoever. But with this whole media hurricane in the search of Atlantis even the unknown truth is so far stretched that we have lost the whole point that the legend of Atlantis teaches us...SOME THINGS ARE MENT NOT TO BE FOUND!
Oh and let me top up my post by adding this : Some yers ago (7-8) there was a greek archaeologist claiming that she found Alexander's tomb somewhere far in India...Greek press inflated that so much that when it was discovered that this whole excavation was in vain sentenced the archaeologist to eternal shame, meaning that she could never be trusted again as a sane archaeologist. When Sleaman brought the city of Vergina, and the Cretan civilisation into light, he received great status from the Greek government, and led tenths of excavations throughout Greece. Does anyone know that just 20km outside Athens there is an Egyptian pyramid whose remains and wall prints are still blazingly "alive"?? Its just 5km away from Marathon, where during ancient times was the richest suburb of athens, and a monumental place for freedom depending ancient battles.
Another example of how you can creatively waste government funding for your personal projects. Atlantis is not even legend or mythology. Besides not even supposed to lie anywhere near Cyprus (rather in the Atlantic Ocean, hence the name...)
Sorry to spoil your party but Atlantis was named like that from Atlas, the giant who was believed to carry cosmos (the earth) on his hands. Not from the Atlantic ocean...Jesus...this is so fuckin paranoid...I'm greek and always fascinated by the story of Atlantis, but i believe that certain things/places need not to be found at all. It was said that Atlantis along with the Library of Alexandreia were the places where ancient greeks kept their knowledge (we all know Alexander the Great conquered India and Egypt) so, i would suppose that if this place was real (situated in the middle of Santorini island complex or wherever they say it was situated) it would hold treasures/artifacts/trancripts that would be amazing if found in our ages, but as the Gods decided that it had to be vanished in order to keep all these knowledge secrets, i would not go against their will. I saw another post somewhere in here claiming that ancient Greeks thought that the Mediterranean was the "end" of their world, meaning that they had never been beyond that.. Hello....are you for real???Then How the fuck Alexander travelled throughout Egypt/India and even Parthenon was built by marble brought from the east, and the statue of Athena was made by gold and elephant bones...Get your facts straight, study a bit about Ancient Greek History (DONT GOOGLE FOR IT), and then come and have a good discussion about whether the ancient city of Atlantis should be found or not...
As long as i remember myself liking Iron Maiden, i always loved watching them live, and if possible have a recording of the gig either mine by Minidisc recording, or other bootlegs that are essential for a Maiden fan. A while ago the boys decided that there is no reason of not recording a live performance (audio/still picture/no video)and share it wisely/widely, as long it won't be sold as "official" merchandise, so naturally lots of us fans loved this. Now i'd love to see this happening in future gigs, not only because of the sound quality superiority (the gig is recorded straight from the mixing panel and not from some ambient/un-acoustical/dead spot you happend to be while recording).
Just Imagine a 666/Eddie USB keyfob loaded with the gig you just enjoyed...How cool is that....
well, it started...I'm quite possitive that RFIDs on the phones, on the PDAs and every mobile device won't be much of a success, due to the fact that most of the people resent on having someone scanning their phones/devices and tracking them down. OTOH, as i have previously mentioned in an older post, i used to participate in a reasearch at my uni for a major mobile phone company for the implementation of fingerprint recognition on cell phones and other mobile devices (PDAs,notebooks, etc). Personally i preffer the fingerprint sollution rather than the RFID one because the phone's security is up to you and not as "hollow" as RFID can be by the use of reverse engineering. It's simple, if your phone is stolen the perp needs to have your thumb or else the phone is just another piece of garbage. You cannot reverse engineer a fingerprint simply because you cannot have a clue on how the actual fingerpint is shaped, while the scanning software is something very ubiquitous and tough to be "hacked" by someone who hasn't got a clue of the scanning algorithms. Now with RFID, whack it off the phone/device and you have an ordinary device to play with .
i remember my dad and grandad used to tell me stories from WW2, when their house was burnt down by the Germans (in Greece), they used to bury in the ground ceramic pots to keep the olive oil and food cool and fresh. Not to mention ancient Greeks who did something similar back in 500 b.c. (thats why even nowadays archeologists find ceramic pots filled with wine and olive oil). This is a very old trick, and an effective one indeed, but why should a bloody Nigerian be awarded for something already done ages ago...Not to mention the similar and classic trick that you can produce water by evaporation (bury a ceramic pot in the ground, put a plastic cover, and in a full day there will be enough water in there, evaporated from the ground)...
I agree to what the parent post described. Although the Karma is not as elegant as the iPod it has a very good Dev team that actually responds to suggestions and firmware bugz. The only problem i faced when buying it was the price that in the UK where i live the cheapest i could find was 269 pounds, a price 1/3 above the US price ($270). Speaking for myself, i was looking for a versatile mp3-ogg player with enough capacity to cram my Heavy metal collection into and enough space for file storage. Before shelling out that kind of money (as beeing a degree student) i was lurking over the Archos 600 player, a player robust enough for travelling and bouncing about. As soon as i found out that it is more hackable than any other mp3 device out there (whack the HD out and exchange it with a bigger one, upload custom firmware to enhance the capabilities, etc) i decided i'm gonna give it a try as soon as i have the money to spend for it. http://rockbox.haxx.se
I've been using SuSe since it's 7.2 version, constanty upgrading on every major distro upgrade (7.2 - 9.0). Throughout all these releases i've seen Yast growing from a weird config manager to a robust application that takes only 5 steps to deliver a fully working linux environment with all the devices autoconfigured and working. It's dependency checking is brilliant as well as it's package management and configuration abilities are competent enough to not fuck things with your installation. I shared my SuSE 9.0 DVD with a ms advocative friend and flatmate and watched him changing lanes through the last three monts.
All I have to say is WELL DONE+THANK YOU SuSE (novell) for this great operating system, i'm looking forward to upgrade to 9.1 .
Last time i re-partitioned my hard drive i nearly killed it with that bloody app , partition magic that is...after a m/board+cpu upgrade I was trying to resize a ntfs partition adjacent to another smaller ntfs partition, which in its turn was adjacent to reiser where SuSE was installed.Partition magic foobared my partition table and both ntfs partitions looked like one big chunk of data, while the reiser partition booted like nothing had happened. So i just booted by using the SuSE Dvd, made a couple of voodoo tricks and Voila! All partitions alive and kicking.. Friendly Advice : Get Rid of partition magic, it only complicates things more...All major and minor Distos now come with a built in partitioner (graphical or not), just keep in mind that fooling around with your partitions may cost you your data!

I wish i had mod points mate to mod you two times + insightful. That's what i do everyday at the uni, and believe me it's far more successful rather than beeing stopped every 5 meters to be handed a cheap ass Bhanghra-Party Flier, or be constantly harrassed by a lame R n'B brotha who insists on giving you a pack of flyers for the upcoming "Hot and Sexy" party at a lame Indian whorehouse (club) where the possibilities of spotting a white person in there are less than finding little green people fiddling around Spirit and Opportunity. My mp3 player at full blast playing Heavy Metal tunes, a folder of everyday's notes, a cup of coffee and the "F**k off, i'm not interested" look is all i need to keep these "monsters" away.
Simple : Convert to ogg... I have a really long database of mp3s and oggs (nearly 120gb)all legally acquired- i dont want to scratch my precious cds and i have been thinking to convert all mp3s to ogg considering the superiority of quality ogg provides. Now for the reason that an ogg zealot might pop up i know that my music quality is degraded when converting to mp3 at the first place and converting to ogg won't do much improvement, but at least i'm gonna have a full hard drive of pure/un-cencored/un-DRM'd music that I LEGALLY OWN BY DEFAULT. One last word... F**k you RIAA When i buy a cd I OWN the music and i use it as I SEE FIT !
I'm currently doing my Bachelors in electronics in a UK University, where final year EE students participate on the development of a fingerprint recognition device for mobile devices sponsored by one of the biggest cell phone companies (Sony-Ericsson). It's been done before for notebook computers (i believe siemens or Acer had a similar device), and we are working on the implementation of such device for mobile phones that are the most common things beeing stolen in the UK. The basic principle of this system is to match the pattern of the fingerprint of a person with the current stored fingerprint "image" of the owner on the phone. As soon as the microprocessor detects a false fingerprint image fed to the device, the phone locks up and idealy sends a sms to the service provider that the phone is beeing stolen. I, personally have worked on the FPGA implementation of the microcontroller, done with Verilog on Xilinx software and i'm confident that in the following years we will see lots of similar devices beeing manufactured for high-priced/valued products such as notebooks, phones, pdas etc.
What??? A patent??? You stole my idea of patents...damn i should had patent patents when i had the chance...
