  1. Be excellent to eachother on Software Exorcism · · Score: 5, Insightful
There are some things that you can control in the workplace and among these are your own attitude and approach. If you choose to get involved in backstabbing and power struggles and the like then that's your choice. You can also take a no-BS stance and do the following:

    1. Tell the truth. 2. Stay out of other people's business. 3. Do the right thing.

Yes, there are some things that can't be avoided. If you are under attack by someone trying to get ahead or find a scapegoat, you have to defend yourself. But, even in these situations, there are choices.

Read what I said carefully. I never made the claim that Valve fabricated anything. I merely pointed out that the code theft provided a convenience to them.

Publicly acceptable because it was somewhat beyond their capacity to prevent (yes yes, poor security, but still) and not a result of bad project management.

  4. Delayed anyways? on Half-Life 2 Delayed Following Code Leak · · Score: 5, Interesting

I just have to wonder if a serious delay was in the works anyway and the code theft gave Valve a publicly acceptable reason.

"Korea's LG Electronics is selling a 26-cubic-foot Multi-Media Refrigerator, with a built-in 15-inch LCD (liquid crystal display) screen for watching TV, surfing the Internet or looking at digital pictures."

I don't know about the rest of you, but when I go to the fridge to grab a coke, I like to stand there and watch a quick sitcom on a 15" LCD display. Right...

  9. Lessons from iTunes on Can Digital TV Games Make It In The States? · · Score: 1

  11. Gamecube losing relevance? on Xbox Price To Shadow PS2, Not GameCube · · Score: 1

My gut tells me that if the Gamecube were more of a market player then Microsoft would react to the recent price drop of the Gamecube. The truth is that Nintendo is becoming less of a player and therefore will not influence others as much.

I'm always amazed how someone can come up with a statistic to support pretty much any conclusion. I think if the Cube were to be yanked completely due to lack of sales, Nintendo would say:
"We are the only console maker to fully realize and pinpoint our maximum sales potential."

  14. Other benefits.... on What The RIAA Gets Out Of File Sharing · · Score: 5, Interesting

There are certainly other benefits for the music industry from P2P sharing. For the artists, especially those who aren't part of the small handful of superstars who get massive marketing, it allows their music to be heard. Typically only a few songs by smaller artists are available via P2P, so if there if a downloader who likes the music, they must purchase a CD if they want to hear more. This theory is based only on my own experiences for a dozen or so smaller artists whom I "discovered" through Kazaa and then bought CDs for.

  19. Misnomer... on Designing Virtual Worlds · · Score: 3, Insightful

Calling the environments created in the glut of recent MMORPG "virtual worlds" is a disservice to the term. Most of these so-called worlds are woefully small in scope and the inhabitants reduced to a very small subset of brainless activities.

  20. It's not this simple. on Former Xbox Director Targets Lack Of Originality · · Score: 2, Insightful

When big money is involved, as it is in this case, safe choices must be made. Sure, you can go out on a limb once in a while and try an original idea. However, most of the time your investors will demand a reasonable profit forcast. This forcast can only be made if there are a large proportion of "sure things" in the pipeline.

  21. DRM? on Microsoft, OD2 Start European Music Service · · Score: 5, Informative
Anyone heard anything about the DRM on this service?

    The one article only states:

'Fans can copy tracks, burn them to CDs and transfer them to other devices as much as they want "within reason"'

That leaves a lot of wiggle room, and truthfully, given Microsoft's recent warming to DRM in general, I wouldn't be surprised if the service leaves customers with only partially usable music.

Thanks for your reply. My post was perhaps strongly worded for dramatic effect... I don't truly believe that insurance is a sham perse. However... I do strongly believe and stand by my statement that insurance companies make it difficult for individuals to make claims in order to discourage these claims. There is no other reason to explain the ridiculous amount of unnecessary paper work that I must perform to make a claim. It should and could be electronic.

  24. Insurance is a SHAM! on Insurance Claims to be Tested by Lie Detector · · Score: 1, Funny

This is just another roadblock that insurance companies will put in front of customers to discourage them from making legitimate claims. The more roadblocks they set up, the more people won't make claims, the more money they make. What I have to do right now to make a simple medical claim is completely ridiculous. I have to fill in a paper form with loads of redundant information such as my address (that isn't on file?!?) and mail it to the company at my cost. It takes 3 or 4 days to get to the company and then they "process" it for another 2 weeks. Why isn't this electronic? Simple. If it were electronic, more people would make claims.
