  1. Re:Well.... on Free SSL Certificate Project · · Score: 1

    Good eye man:

    March 22, 2001.
Late today VeriSign admitted that it issued two Class 3 Software Publisher code-signing certificates on Jan. 29 and Jan. 30 to someone posing as a Microsoft employee. VeriSign discovered this approximately two weeks after issuing the certificates while conducting a background check based on the information provided by the imposter.

VeriSign has revoked the certificates and added them to its certificate revocation list (CRL). However, VeriSign code-signing certificates do not support automatic CRL-checking because they do not contain CRL Distribution Point (CDP) information. This means that unless a user takes the initiative to manually check VeriSign's CRL before installing any software signed with these certificates, the user's computer will trust any program signed with the fraudulent certificates.

So, I'm confused. Someone help me out. A browser will still identify the fraudulent certs even though they've been revoked? It will only turn up if an end-user runs some sort of manual check on the fraudulent cert?!?

March, 2001 ... does this have anything to do with the two "Untrusted Publishers" list I'm looking at in my IE certificate's list that expired in January, 2002 issued to "Microsoft Corporation" with a friendly name of "Fraudulent, NOT Microsoft"? (And, no, I don't use IE -- just fired it up to check the certs :)

  2. Replacing IE on Mozilla Chairman Speaks on Open Source/Microsoft · · Score: 5, Insightful

The challenge is changing the end-user more than anything. I have tried for the longest to get my company to convert to Firefox, but users have integrated, in their heads, that to use the web is to use IE, and they can tell they're firing up another browser they get nervous, blame all problems going forward on the new browser, and simply don't like change. Microsoft did something very powerful by link IE to Windows. IE has become saturated within the minds of users. The few users I have converted over I have to change the new browser icon to the big "E."

People also have a great amount of grace for microsoft, excusing their security holes, making such statements as, "well, if another browser gets as popular as IE then it'll have the same problems, etc." And I'm talking about IT professionals not just end users. I try to explain that, no, Microsoft has been uniquely bad at security....

No matter what the browser, it has an uphill climb against IE....

  8. From an Avid Fan.... on Take-Two to Publish Next Civilization Game · · Score: 5, Interesting

Here is my take. Correct anything you wish as I enjoy learning especially about one of my all-time and long lasting games: Civilization.

Let me say here that I do indeed hope that they don't fix what isn't broke:

I am an avid Civ fan. I bought the hard-boxed, big mannualed CivI -- that came with all sorts of goodies -- from Radio shack in the early 90s and fell in love. I also went into a coma and nearly caused myself and my cousin to flunk college.

CivI: This game set the stage. It built upon the basis of railroad tycoon and the way in which is incorporated butter and bullets (which many games get lop-sided) set it apart as a turn-based game. A player could focus on military might or cultural growth or both.

What it lacked: it lacked a more advanced combat system. The ol' "phalanx takes out battleship" is the prime example.

CivII: This game was a vast improvement over CivI and was a needed addition. An advanced combat system was now in place, technologies were added filling in gaps and wonders of the world were expanded. A true gem that brought the dynasty into its own. I thoroughly even enjoyed the video clips of the advisors -- actors -- who would discuss with you your decision-makings.

What it lacked: not much -- that we knew of, but CivIII would show us what would make the Civs even better than ever....

CivCTP: "Call To Power" was a travesty. I tried diligently to play this game and like it, but they did exactly what SSI did with the 1st Panzer General and that is they fixed what wasn't broken. Suddenly, all pieces had different movement commands, a different system of controlling settlers, etc. Nothing fit. It was an entirely new game and it flunked horribly. I don't ever wanna see it or talk to it again -- I DIVORCE IT!!!

    What it lacked: EVERYTHING!!!

CivNet: K, of course, the one thing you ALWAYS wanted from Civ was the ability to trash your buddies. CivNet comes out -- woohoo!!! Wtf POS was this? Talk about crashing! It wasn't worth it. And patches? Not many. It was based on CivI too (am I missing something?)

What it lacked: um, the ability to not crash while in a networked game after 5 minutes of play....

CivIII: Finally, another improvement -- or was it? CivIII came out and my first impression was "ah!" thank goodness they didn't rework the commands or controls. Good, good, good -- I can use the number pad to move settlers and stuff. Nice. Wait! What's this!!! Cultural boundaries!!!!!! (orgasm). Yes! I first saw it in Black and White. The best two things about B&W were the cultural boundaries and the king room (rest pretty much sucked). Finally, something that added to the mystique of playing a turn-based god-game. As your culture grows, it only makes sense that a natural boundary and influense would exude from it. Excellent. Ah, the wonders are about the same -- technologies. My goodness. They took CivII, they added mo' betta graphics and also cultural boundaries! I love them! (SSI!!! Pay Attention!!! -- yes, yes, I know all about SSI).

What it lacked: Wait a minute. Some ... thing ... isn't ... right. I, I, wtf are the Chinese planting cities are pure ice! Wtf are the Romans putting cities are pure rock! Wtf? I gotta keep planting cities like a madman? Um, why is Civ dragging down my honking system? CivIII was promising and nearly became my Civ to keep playing, but the way the AI built cities forever and always at a maddenning pace, the way the game chugged after much growth -- it was too much. I grew to not like it. Why should I have to wait 5 minutes between turns while the AI catches up as the math is hammered out?

Conclusion: today, right now, I play CivToT all the time. It's like an on-going chess game for me. I play it on my old P2 laptop and it runs like a champ. It is excellent. CivToT (Civilization II Test of Time) is my Civ of choice and will remain so until someone

  14. What's to reveal? on Duchovny Says X-Files Sequel in Works · · Score: 1

The Xfiles was, and is, an incredible series, but I think it's ran its course. I'm now watching through the entire series from scratch on DVD and loving it still, but after almost a decade one thing became clear as the two primary actors were leaving -- there was nothing to reveal. The story carries itself due to the unrevealedness of the things it discusses: government conspiracies, alien existence, ancient lore of monsters, spiritualism and unexplained phenomena.... It utilized the same interesting substance as "The Night Stalker" from years past that my dad used to watch when I was a kid (glad they finally paid homage to that in an episode). But the ability of the show, movie, whathaveyou to continue to deliver that chemical ruch in our brains due to the stories it tells containing these "unexplained" mysteries has surely been pushed. Fandome can carry it like it has Star Trek, but what we are all really bemoaning here is the fact that Chris Carter, Xfiles itself, could never deliver what we really wanted: a conclusion, an end-game, a closure to all the built-up mystery. It's like asking an MMOG to have an "end." It just isn't that sort of thing.

As I retorted in an IRC channel on the day it was announced that DD and GA were leaving the show and a guy stated, "DD and GA are leaving before Carter has a chance to reveal anything!!!" I responded, "dude, he's had nearly 10 years to reveal something -- he's got nothing to reveal...."
