I don't know the price of a cisco cert, but there are practical things you can do to add to your skill set. Learn network coding, securtiy, network dependent apps - work on oss projects.
Show potential employers you can apply what you've already learned.

Wrongo! Depends on the type of company employing you. If you work for a finance company, you are probably right. OTOH, if you work for a consulting company (especially if they resell anything) that cert is worth alot more to them than you.
I've never personally paid for any cert, and I'd think real hard about cost/benefit before doing so.

Gotta know how to use it. I have no phone except a cell phone - been that way for 6 years. When I tell peers/customers that fact they respect it, and I don't get calls 24/7. Also, as my friends will attest, I'm never afraid to shut the phone off for a nice quiet weekend!
And of course, if caller id displays 'unknown' i don't answer, ever.
you're so full of SH*T ! Obviously, you've never had to do anything that required any discipline or you would not make such an asinine statement like "just stop...".
As someone who's quitting nicotine (smoking) - 3 months and I still have daily cravings, headaches, irritability, stress.
It's not that easy. At any time I could fall right back into smoking just to feel "normal" for a while.
No. Read a couple of his books. Truly couldn't tell the difference between the two - same plot, characters, endings (actually lame excuse for an ending). But, this is/. - we will be hunted out and
sent guantanamo for reprogramming.

I use it for product research for work, learning about new subjects, reading the news and research stories for more indepth info (!=/.:), online dictionary, encyclopedia, some entertainment though not much. I still find the local yellow pages better than the online versions (i like Apple's sherlock for this becuase of the maps but it just won't find everything I need). Looking up local movie, concert schedules. And, listening to online radio stations as well.
uh, I use it alot. Then again I don't receive a newspaper, and don't own an idiot box.

as i've learned it, perfect pitch is the ability to recgonize/recall any specific pitch isntantly. Absolute pitch, is the ability to recognize a given pitch in context - by recognizing an interval (a third higher than the previous pitch). think absolute path, for an analogy.
Take from someone who's been there. Upper Mgt. does not want to know about any of the technical arguments (a generalization, I know)
They want to know from a purely business perspective, in order
1) cost of solutionS - gotta have alternatives
2) reliability - gotta show it's reliable - no suit likes being called a 1am for anything
3) proof of concept - who else is using this s/w? happen to have a working solution in place (lab? test machine? guinea pig developers?)
if you can show those things, and you mgr. doesn't have an agenda (hmmruph, read kickback) - you can make progress. without those points, presented succintly, you won't get a second chance.

Disk backups have been around for awhile, companies such as veritas, storagetek, emc, etc. offer Point in Time backups to disk, as an itermediary to tape. As others have stated, you still need offsite for DR.
1. Sun made the nfs protocol available from the getgo
2. I've been working with solaris since it's inception, it's been stable since 2.4, and I've seen _HUNDREDS_ of implementations in commercial sites, with no serious issues (i.e., data corruption). NetAppliance - what the f*ck? they only made a name for themselves in the last couple of years, and the biggest market is the m$ world.
3. reallly? got bug reports on that, or do you simply not understand how to install/maintain a UNIX system - you sound like a troll or and idiot - pick one.
4. Okay, this one I'll agree with you on, (most) websites don't require this type of processing capacity - but how about that backend RDMS ? Or a simulation engine ? I deployed / maintained a number of Sun systems with 32 + CPUs - how many systems that size are running Linux, in the real world ?
IMO, you need to get a really *big* clue.

Yeah, and the first time someone's research, say that of a prominent Prof., ends up stolen, the lawsuit that entails will have the U. Admins will be that crap out so fast you'll miss the "whooosh".
Bought a 15" last week, and loving it. My Linux machine is still here, but I haven't had a need to touch it, could be sold soon...
I've had no trouble compiling a number of apps I like on the powerbook, and have get excellent connectivity to my cable modem, internal network at the office, and customer sites.
It's a pleasure not having to dual boot for specific tasks, or maintain multiple systems.
Placed an order with Apple a few days ago, and they charged tax. First order I've placed with them, so I don't know if this is new. But it was the first time I've seen tax added to online order I've made.

That's okay. I wouldn't admit to it either.

Got a Mac, got a Linux server, when they released the Linux version, I'll be happy.
Would you prefer to have Monsanto own the rights to your genes? Or the rights to that patch? -k

I can easily hack into a UNIX system without nothing more than a floppy disk and the power switch.
Really? How many work stations, today, have floppy disk drives ?
hmmmm...
