The success of a social networking tool depends on the people that use it - it doesn't depend on whether it is open source or not... If you are wanting to meet different beautiful people I suggest you stay away from a social network where the only people who are going to join are your existing group of friends!!
Mate - Jeff used to provide downloads of his whole video game archive on his website before he switched to llamasoft.co.uk. I don't know where you can get them now. Jeff reckoned that one of his larger mistakes was to license his software for release on a PC at one point - perhaps he has realised the value of his software brands and has withdrawn the downloads so he can realise an income off them at some point. His Gridrunner and Camel titles as well as Llamasoft and his name certainly have good brand recognition amongst the gamers of the day so he well deserves to profit from those:)
Jeff rocks - my first machine was a Vic 20 and my first game Gridrunner - my second machine was a C64 and my first game on that was Revenge of the Mutant Camels - Jeff has defined my decidedly warped computer existence!!
I want to make sure (a user) can't get through... an online experience without hitting a Microsoft ad.
Well, don't think this behaviour is exclusive to Microsoft. Every CEO and Marketing exec is saying exactly the same thing, and have been for years. Everyone wants their ad where the user is.
Yay for seeing the other side of the argument at last. I didn't know that OpenOffice had no MS Office macro compatibility... that is a biggie.
I'm pleased to see an informed other side of the argument at last! I'm a little sick of hearing people say that OpenOffice is all good without backing it up.
Users can either :
1. Switch on automatic updating in which case they don't have to do anything.
2. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download the patches.
Microsoft provide fully automatic solutions to do it. If a user gets infected they are STUPID. It isn't Microsofts fault.
I think Microsoft gave up on trying to market MS Passport to corporate and governent websites a long long time ago, because corporates and governments were smart enough to realise the points you mention (and others).
And I do make very useful posts in other items, thanks!
You have a point there, but I give Slashdot a little more credibility in technical issues than CNN et al. - I thought that Slashdot would assume that its readers would know that a website going down is a very regular occurrence in the world occurring thousands (millions?) of times a day, and would be above reporting it just because CNN did.
Choose one:
a) Slashdot reported because CNN did
b) Slashdot reported because it was a Microsoft site
c) All of the above.
Just because a Microsoft website goes down it is front page news. Seriously slashdot, your Linux loving policy is blinding you as to what is relevant and what isn't.
Every Microsoft operating system during development does! The OS is not designed to run on systems that we use now, it is designed to run on systems that we will be using in 3 years time.
Historically, when Windows NT received heaps of exactly the same flack about it running extraordinarily slowly from reviewers quite simply because they weren't smart enough to work that basic fact out.
I have a mate here who has done just that. He owns a very rural house in a great part of the country about an hour out of town (I live in NZ - very fashionable especially today!). He works for $$$ 2 years on 1 year off approx. He is in his 40's and spends his year off working on KDE. He has had to obviously work to get to that position but by all accounts it is his passion.
That letter up there was the most rational thing I've ever read on Slashdot. YOU young programmer should read it. Indeed there was a save the world mentality when I left uni. When you leave you throw yourself into the first project you get at 200%. Luckily there was no free software, so I worked in a real job.
The software I wrote back then was world leading and whilst it was never sold big time, it certainly was legendary in the uni I ended up working in.
Now I'm 36. I work Project Leading and architecting software projects. I have a nice office that overlooks a very pretty city (although it is raining at the moment). I have travelled the back blocks of the world off the proceeds of writing software and had some pretty amazing experiences. Software paid well enough to enable me to take 2 years off without effectively working at all to do this.
I'v saved all the money I've earned in the last 5 years in software so I can now buy a really great house largely mortgage free because that is what is important to me now, and I can also now chill a little and start something very satisfying of my own to earn some money. What is important to you changes over life. What was important to me has changed so much. Its pretty hard for a young programmer to believe but it is true.
Don't throw all your efforts into free stuff. You are effectively making money for those evil corporations you hate. They ARE effectively making money off you.
Whilst is is unPC to earn money, money buys you time and a quality of time you spend. Don't waste the opportunity to increase the quality of the time you have.
If I could mod the original letter up to +10 I would. That is a vey sane piece of writing.
I'm proud to be a Kiwi (New Zealander) today. I'm proud of the fact that New Zealand is on the map for something other than sport/rugby - the incredible creativity of the key players in making those movies.
Yes, I've just been there myself on a PC rather than an Apple, with a Sony DV camcorder.
The guts is, if you are serious about taking digital video from the camera, you must use a firewire cable. Don't believe what you read about USB2.0 being equivalent to Firewire speedwise so they must be the same - it isn't true. USB2.0 is functionally very different.
Most video capture programs won't even recognize the USB2 connection - even on the PC (I suspect this is the problem you are having - The Sony USB connection is only good for taking stills from the memory stick really). However, plug in a firewire cable and you are sweet - all programs recognise it and it is a pure lossless transfer from the camera to the computer - PC or Mac. Apple have probably done you a tremendous favour by not recognising the USB connection.
Whilst I appreciate that neither you or your company are idiots, the fact is that you will probably continue to use Microsoft product like you have in the past and have to pay for this upgrade.
Our research shows that very few if any of our customers have made a switch or are likely to switch to an alternative operating system, and thus we feel that we are providing a service to you by upgrading your operating environment to a more modern version and charging you money for the privilege.
It would certainly generate significantly less. A new release of Windows give Microsoft an excuse to raise prices for the new product as well as gaining revenue from upgraders. It gives Microsoft a new baseline too - You must have Windows X to run this product. If this was not the case then we would all still be running Windows 98.
I'm a little surprised this is big news. Of course they were going to release a new version of Windows before Longhorn. The shareholders were going to complain if the Microsoft Windows division didn't produce any revenue for a year because of no new product being released. It would have been cutting off half of Microsofts revenue.
You may be moderating this as funny but that is the most serious/insightful comment you will see here.
If you think about it, it is going to be really hard to show scenery ie mountain landscapes on this screen - you can only show objects standing in a void - the demo piccies here show a man standing in the middle of nowhere. Think about Star Wars and Princess Leia standing in the middle of nowhere in R2's projection - there are no walls around her...
So if you think about it, the only real use for this are artificial landscapes like Air Traffic Control displays, and people.
A G5 Apple Powerbook would mean my switch to Apple from x86 based machines - owning an iPod has pushed me part way.
I think Apple would be wise to go straight to a Powerbook G5 to catch the momentum that the Apple brand currently has. A so-so G4 update would not capture the imagination.
Lets hope that Apples rumoured current experimentation with water cooling bears fruit.
They need to hire some marketing and branding people. That is the stupidest name I have heard. At least Lindows was clever. Why didn't they think about it?
I read somewhere that MyDoom was named because the virus when viewed in an ASCII viewer contains an amount of freetext that was meant to say 'mydomain' but instead it was mis-spelt in the virus to say 'mydoomain' - hence MyDoom.
Lots of photos of airbag imprints, but look at the photo of the tiled structure - intelligent life on mars enthusiasts are going to love that one! Looks a bit like the Giants causeway in Ireland (only less geometric!!)

I can't think of any reason why anyone would own one.

Who cares... disk is so cheap. Memory is so cheap. Processing power is way beyond what the average person needs.
