How about the TV is dead a perspective to begin with? Most younger people in the West watch TV. Or, do they? Well, were there is still some money around. But very little. Still, the jury may be hung, without the pornographic connection, however relevant that is.
In the five to ten year perspective, most likely, traditional TV is dead. As in a "Steve Jobs is dead," forever.
Make sure you don't get stuck in standardization process where the aim is to bring different formats together, before data is entered.
Some formats are incompatible today and will be forever.
The big issue is that such a process will NEVER go anywhere, cost a ridiculous amount of both money and time, with no result in sight, ever.
Yes, I have seen those process from a closer range than I wish to remember. Big in-house, between-house, between-block, between-county fights that lead to that no data was ever entered.
Just do the gritty work immediately. Don't insist on OCR everything, just scan it as plain images, as much as you can. Then, if the money is there, then consider OCR.
IGNORE anything that sounds like an untested high-tech solution. Use well established technology, like high performance scanners etc. if it gets the initial job done, entering those damn documents into the computers.
Look at Google! They did almost all books in the world in just a few years. Did they bother with converting 16th century type setting into Times New Roman or something similar. Of course not.
Chinese are pragmatic, or at least the government.
They realize that if they will need to provide a future for 1.x billion people they need to do something about the local environment.
Climate change appears to be another matter on today's agenda. But, I'm sure that will change too. There are other large pollutors which will be more difficult to change, despite having a better general awareness.

Well, Linux kernel 3.0 being ranked among the main news headlines like Osamas' death must be on of the main 2011 comparisons. Which is the more important in the long run? I am happy that Osama's ideas have very few mainstream followers.

Nature vs Biotech 2-0? Yes, make that Nature vs Biotech 2-0; I just happened to watch Rise of the Planet of the Apes (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1318514/) yesterday!:)
Earth is getting saturated. Soon only India will be left as cheap labor. Soon after that, with markets like China, EU and the US, the Indians will be in the same position the Chinese are in now.
Will there ever be an expanding economy when there is no cheap labor left?
"Rabbi Amnon Yitzhak held a protest against television and its products on Tuesday evening, during which 1,000 (relatively old-fashioned) TV sets were thrown into large garbage bins. The modern "Tashlich" ceremony was held outside the Israel Broadcasting Authority's building in Jerusalem. Rabbi Yitzhak is famous for his activities which are centered on helping Jews to become more religious or observant. Leader of Dushinsky Hasidic dynasty threatens to expel members caught with 'non-kosher' cellular phones, computer with Internet connection"
Published? December 9, 2011... So much for progress into the 21st century.
What I am getting that these Amish-like sheep brains are all over. The Amish, the Hasidic and now some Moslems. I am sure that there has been symbolic burning amongst "peace-loving" Buddhist too...
$123 for Apple mobile devices, $101 for Android devices, but $87 for desktop PCs?
Sounds very unlikely, to me, that mobile devices would average more expensive purchases than the desktop, even on average. I guess they don't count all the small apps for Apple devices, and ignore larger purchases typically done from your home PC, like used (an new) cars and hi-fi equipment etc.

In a previous post I made an erroneous referral to an East African space program - http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2610112&cid=38635706.
Now I recall it was from the Congo - http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=591_1249254184. Strangely, this has not been reported by Slashdot.
At least one rodent still is missing in action.
Bribes within Kenya is a concern. But the Somali border is even more worrying

Still, didn't one of these East Africa countries even launch a MadMax space rocket a year ago? Which exploded right after launch?
Proximity to the Somali pirates (http://www.google.com/search?q=somali+pirates)... Sigh.
How fun isn't that compared to other nuclear wielding states.

I'm very traditional. I like entering a vagina with my penis. So, that high-tech crap the article is about is nothing for me.

"Earth-like worlds" is not an incorrect term. Misused perhaps, but not incorrect.
