  1. Re:Wow... low level on Outsourcing Winners and Losers · · Score: 3, Interesting

You do have a point, but there is an exception here. With embedded work and gaming consoles, you don't usually have the low-level work done for you, and having optimal code will give better results than sticking in better hardware since the hardware usually comes with tied in with the software ( think OSes and such on PDA's ).

I'm currently an embedded systems developer, and I think I've found my niche, the work's interesting and I have the opportunity to optimize my work, and not have to rely on libraries.

I guess this sort of situation is analogous to making things the old fashioned way, like making homemade ice cream, where you can enjoy the process of making it and enjoying the final product, even though it takes more time and effort than running to the local grocery store. I guess embedded work and a few other things ( research? ) are the only places in which programming is still an art form.

I think to a certain point, piracy can drive the price of games up. However, if piracy reaches a point where it's so widespread ( IIRC, it's a lot worse in China than here ), then the only thing left to do is lower the prices. It's sort of like an upside down parabola, shifted up and to the right.

Having colonies on the moon has a lot of advantages, for example, launching some sort of spacecraft from the moon to another object ( say, an asteriod ) and then back, sort of like making round trips. This sort if thing would be great for mining, since having shuttles having to go back and forth through the earth's atmosphere would be expensive for mining.

I'd have to disagree with co-op jobs. These days jobs are harder to come by. I know a lot of my friends have had great trouble getting jobs, and RIM has roughly 50 co-ops there at any given time. On top of that, a great percent of full-timers are Waterloo students.
The relationship between these two organizations ( RIM and U of Waterloo ) is symbiotic, and could seriously damage U of W.

  14. Learning on Measuring The Benefits Of The Gentoo Approach · · Score: 2, Insightful

I must say, that Gentoo is a great Distro for actually learning some of the things of the Linux environment.
Gentoo was/is my second distro (I tried redhat first), I was intrigued by the idea of doing everything from almost scratch.
Starting from Stage 1, I was able to learn quite a few things that I probably would not have learnt till some time if I had not decided to do a Gentoo Stage 1 setup as you're somewhat forced to learn the basics and have a fairly good foundation to go learn more stuff yourself.
Although I am sure there are other distros out there (including linux from scratch, if that's even technically a distro ) that are like Gentoo, but I find it to be a rather good Distro.
However though, I may decide some time from now to try the "from scratch" route, and perhaps learn even more. Although, I think the think that will keep me with Gentoo, like others have said is Portage, I think it would be great if there was a well maintained Portage-like system for any distro, as a piece of software, even though it's probably possible to get portage working on other distros, but probably not without some major tinkering.
