  1. Re:Looks like good policework on Widespread Spying Preceded '04 GOP Convention · · Score: 3, Insightful

Anarchy, terror and violence are a police prerogative.

I watched this convention on television and saw the mass arrests in D.C. during the Nixon years.

Police are always politically controlled and will commit any violence necessary to satisfy their masters.

When police leave criminal investigations to enforce political decisions, no one is safe.

This is a normal business practice. Every company checks localities for tax breaks before committing to a major investment.

Here, in the American southeast, jobs are very important. An investment of six hundred million dollars and two hundred jobs is a fair trade for the tax break requested. And I doubt Google will have many minimum wage jobs at their new location.

This is the same treatment given to everyone from bakeries to automobile manufacturers. All will receive tax breaks for new plants and jobs. The only question is how much.

After reading this thread, I see no one has considered the two classical solutions.

    • Extend the empire. We seized 2/3 of Mexico in 1847. Take the remainder. As a bonus, Mexico has oil. The benefits of US citizenship will be extended to all Mexicans, not just those free to travel here. As sorry as American government seems at times, it would be a huge improvement over Mexican government.
    • Set up a multi-tiered citizenship model. Levels descending from full citizenship to denizens of the town with no privileges. Have privilege levels based on education, national service, or whatever seems appropriate.

While I personally advocate neither solution, it seems odd that they are never brought up in any discussion about illegal immigration.
