Its funny you mentioned that about being on the streets and how it changes you. I'm as big a geek as the next, and I actually experience a little anxiety when I am unable to check Slashdot or other regularly updated online sources for extended periods of a few days or more. The reason being that I might miss something, and then it'll get buried under all of the new things, and I can't even keep up with those so how would I ever take care of the stuff that got backed up?
One of my big fantasies right now is just to live on a deserted tropical island. I'd just have to worry about food, water, and shelter. I am almost a senior in college, and I'm actually considering going to Japan to teach English just as kind of a fun thing for a year or so before I lock myself down in a career. Because the longer you're out of touch with things, the harder it is to get back in, and often times it can mean others get ahead of you. These pressures are very hard to set aside.
" The problem is that it's boring. Why bother reading manga if you can get the same effect from a Maxim and a Guns & Ammo?"
I was actually making a joke, but since you obviously didn't get that, I will reply to your statement.
What you should have said is "its boring to me". To a lot of people, they might consider that an improvement. There's a reason sex and violence sell, its cuz people like it. Who are you to judge what is "good" and what isn't. It's 100% subjective, so its a moot argument.
My Japanese friend told me that words ending with ou (as it is written in hiragana) such as ikimashou would be more male sounding than ikimasho, and he pronounced the differences, but they mean the same thing, can anybody clarify? I never know what is more used by females, and being male and watching anime with lots of females in it, I tend to pick up words only to be later embarrassed when I say it and he tells me thats how girls say it.
There was a great article in the NY Times Magazine about this exact phenomenon. I wonder how much of it is the music that makes them feel detached, and how much is the appearance of the headphones.
Perfect example, when I sit in the cafeteria at college for lunch, and I'm reading the paper and don't want people coming up to talk to me, I leave my headphones on my head even if I don't have music on. It kind of lets me screen people. If I see someone I want to talk to, I can take them off, otherwise I can leave them on and most leave me alone.
It would be difficult for any one of us to explain Japanese cultural references in anime. I would say the easiest way to find out would be to do some basic research on Japanese culture and society, then watch some anime and you will notice things pop out. But if you want a cheesy example, Goku from DBZ is originally based off of the monkey king god.
And if you think anime has absolutely no meaning usually, I would suggest watching Neon Genesis Evangelion in its entirety.
For a good source of free to download (unlicensed in America) anime, you should try Animesuki.com. They are one of the top bittorrent trackers out there. I should mention they only serve unlicensed anime, there ARE search engines which allow you get the licensed stuff, but I won't mention it here, suffice to say a quick Google search would give you what you seek.
I should also mention that typically the UNLICENSED anime is better than the LICENSED anime. Although companies are getting better about what they choose to license. For example, they snapped up Last Exile ASAP. It's a great series. But they still have not licensed Naruto, which is probably the most popular current anime. It's already at episode 72 fansubbed release, and plans for like 5 more seasons. Extremely immersive anime, about ninjas, and you can actually pick up some ancient Japanese culture from it.
No shit, this should be an opportunity for Sony to realize its biggest wet dream. Make customers buy a new system from you, and then purchase a new format of the same old games with more protection. That's like, next to nothing in terms of development costs for the games. I'm shocked that Sony isn't milking this in such a way, and a bit relieved.
Crap! And here I am just getting to Slashdot today when there are already 50 some +3 and up posts on this. That's ok I thought, I'll just say something clever and funny. Then I looked at the pics. I noticed the princess leia thing, and I thought hmmm.....it would be so witty of me to say "Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope."
Then I get to the posts, and the first post I see on my screen is YOURS you goddamned insensitive clod.
Ah well,
"Perhaps I can find new ways of motivating them"(/vader)
And um......for no real reason.....um.......is this going to become the new de facto download on Kazaa? Right. Um.....Let's say this WERE to make it online.....would it need me to plug my computer into a different type of wall socket?
But keep in mind where all the cool stuff comes from.........the military. Imagine if because of them sinking money into this, a whole new level of immersion is developed for MMORPGs. Welcome to virtual reality 2.0
" The nastier questions begin at the point at which an 'earth simulator' like this could have the control mechanisms tied to reality unbeknownst to 'pilots' within the sim.
You thought you were running through the sim... you had no idea you just took a UAV on a live mission and actually killed 2 dozen people. Missions take place, with perfect human guidance - and not even the soldiers involved knew it actually happened."
I suggest you rent the movie Toys with Robin Williams.
"My guess is, a Sky-writing laser is much less expensive than a bunch of godless toys. Whoops, there goes my common sense again...if there's a buck to be made the more expensive option will be selected."
I can just see it now......the Earth is about to end.....all of humanity will most likely be wiped out, and the asteroid is now visible overhead.
All of a sudden, some huge fricken laser shoots out of nowhere, and displays a logo for MS Windows Doomsday Edition. They're willing to spend the money on the off-chance someone saves us at the last minute, they will have practically every single person's eyeball who is in range of the asteroid all for the cost of a sky-writing laser.
Lets look at the current situation with the Desert Combat mod for bf1942. Easily the top mod for the game right now, one of the top mods for all FPS right now.
The developers just signed up with DICE to develope the next version of it for them and have a budge of $500k. I hope they don't charge for it.
What happens if EA starts buying up all the good mods, and then decides to charge for them?
Mods used to be the last bastion of free entertainment for many gamers. You had the original game, but there were all the sweet addons which completely rocked your world, for free. What if that world disappears because EA wants to charge for it and buys the good ones?
Now maybe I'll be ableto do somethings and pay less rather than buy the whole expansion and only ever get to use 1/8th of it. Oh wait, the game companies would just raise prices.
You are about to become level 2, do you accept the $9.99 charge for doing so? (Yes/No)
Perhaps the reason people get so fed up with environmentalists is because they see things in black and white and are completely unable to give any ground to reach a joint agreement.
There's always one of you. I'm sorry if this comes off trollish, but every time a story about the progress of mankind comes up, someone will say something like "shouldn't we think of the cold, hungry, starving children. Or shouldn't we think about all of the people in war torn countries without food....", or "shouldn't we be taking care of Earth?"
Look, we are taking care of Earth. Different people do it. If we devoted every single persons efforts to taking care of the Earth, we'd never get anywhere as a civilization. Sorry, it aint gonna happen. Who knows, maybe on this quest to discover our universe we might find something that could help Earth, but that wouldn't happen if everybody just worried about fixing the Earth right now.
Well, the answer is simple. When my team needed to make a vessel become immune to heat, we simply cast a spherical gate around it which opened into the Para-Elemental Plane of Ice.
I should mention this was in a D&D campaign, hope that doesn't damage my credibility.
I still play Dragonrealms, and I've been a player since it was free on AOL. They charge the same as much graphical MMORPGs, and the gameplay is astounding. They CONSTANTLY implement new, well-balanced game systems. The world is large, plenty of people, and for some reason, there is a dearth of fucktards to screw up the game.
Should be a no-brainer...........IF YOU'RE A COMMUNIST!

I fail to see what the problem is.

Think of how the world could be changed then.

Dude, isn't Life one of the first games you learn to program in C++? It shouldn't be TOO hard to just make it 3D.
You can't blow up a bus of people in the real world and do it as exactly as you might be able to in a computer game.
I can just see it now......the Earth is about to end.....all of humanity will most likely be wiped out, and the asteroid is now visible overhead.

My point, which you completely missed, is that not EVERYONE needs to take care of the Earth. Nor should they.
Look, we are taking care of Earth. Different people do it. If we devoted every single persons efforts to taking care of the Earth, we'd never get anywhere as a civilization.
