While this may have been a genuine 'article', it is also possible it was a PR piece. Where someone gets a writer to write about a piece with a certain slant....that is PR. We need more of this. The NY Times article BLASTED DRM. Now we just need one of these for frivalous patents.....and for the **AA's and for all the other things slashdotters bitch about.
I suspect however that it will become increasingly more common for these types of things to surface as journalists and reporters LOVE to take the side of the consumer and go after the "greedy corporations". It makes them look very good in the eyes of the people, who they are trying to gain popularity with. It will only snowball from here my friends, it's just a matter of time till things work themselves out.
" from the looks of this - it appears EFF is going to be running newspaper and magazine ads. wrong place. these need to be made into 30 second television commercials, where a much wider audience can be reached."
Until you consider the fact that the cost of the air time required to reach the target audience of this campaign would be way out of reach for them, and newspaper and magazine ads work just fine for many things. Hell, the Mini Cooper was only in magazines for a long time and look how well it did. And if you want the REAL money behind this, educate as many rich people as you can. Whats the best way to do this? Through the NY Times, the New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, etc. Not every ad campaign needs to be on TV to be effective, nor can everybody afford it.
K, I put in the subject Obligatory for a REASON. I realize its overrated, I was making the corny joke BECAUSE of that. People need to learn to recognize sarcasm.
It could be set in the desert, and could have the opening scene in the Oval Office with G.W. telling Harrison Ford that there is a POWERFUL MYSTERIOUS ARTIFACT that evil terrorists are hiding that he needs to find. He's not really sure what it looks like...just that it has the potential to bring lots of DOOM! And if he comes across any oil to make sure to relay the coordinates to his personal line.
Well, hate to burst your bubble, but while LoTR runs out...there is PLENTY of other Middle Earth material to drag out the LoTR brand. The most logical film after the trilogy would be The Hobbit. Then probably the Silmarillion, although that kinda reads like the torah...."and so and so begot so and so, who begot so and so...who betrayed so and so..." And then there's all the forgotten stories of Middle Earth. Trust me, the Tolkien run is FAR from over. I just hope they're all as well done as the LoTR trilogy.
"I don't know how you fellows make a decision, but when I go to the store to buy something, the coolness factor is always huge. For instance, buy the Cheerios that I know will satisfy my breakfast hunger, or go for the Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs, with the awesome toy? I will often go with the latter, even though I know better. (apologies to Calvin for stealing his cereal)
The point I am getting to here is this: Americans have always, and will always, go with the shiny new "cool" object, even when they know better. This "slump" as with all slumps, is temporary. Americans, myself included, will come back to buy the product with the bells and whistles.

Well, YOU my friend are exactly the kind of consumer (notice I didn't say customer)that corporations want. You don't question the product, you just go with whatever is more shiny.
Fortunately for the economy, businesses don't base their decisions on what solution is more shiny. They have cold hard numbers in front of them and they pick whatever gives them the most benefit at the cheapest price. So sorry, but what may work on sheep like you will not necessarily work on a competent business.
" We should just cycle everywere. Cheap, environemntally friendly and relaxing"
I don't know how you got modded up for this....maybe you were being sarcastic....but seriously....Ok, lets pretend I'm your boss, and you are based in NY. You have a business meeting in Cali a week from now.....better get peddling.
"I've had a TiVo for three years now, and I don't skip all ads. First, some shows are compelling enough that I watch them live, and am forced to suffer through ads as a result. Second, ads for products that I'm actually interested in are worth watching, as are genuinely funny and creative ads (I love the Jack in the Box Chipotle Chicken Sandwich commercial). Not all advertising is evil."
Mod this up. There's a reason why AdCritic, the website that had a massive database of movieclips of commercials for free went under, and resurfaced as a subscription service. Its not because they weren't popular enough to make ends meet. Its because they were TOO popular, and couldn't afford the bandwidth/server space. People do want to see ads, just good creative ones.
" As long as it's statistical it will tell advertisers a lot. As the article mentions, it's not something the broadcasters want to hear. But if advertisers knew the best time to show ads, maybe we wouldn't get tampon ads during dinner."
But keep in mind the agencies don't necessarily want it either, because then their clients get quantitative data......and they can say.....we don't want to pay you, because you did not meet our goals.
Advertising agencies have still got it all wrong. "
The bad agencies at least. I work for an ad agency, and I can tell you, there are several good agencies out there that DO get it, and they are the ones that are getting all the business these days because it is becoming easier and easier for the client to get quantitative data about how effective the agency is being for them. Once you have quantitative data, its all a question of picking the agency with the best numbers, and thus the bad agencies will eventually be weeded out, or supported with dwindling ad budgets from companies who can't afford the good agencies.

" Did you ever think the plan makes no sense because it's just another brilliant piece of M$ PR? This story has the same stench that the Apple to M$ switcher did. As you noticed, any normal group would have just released the code and trick. No one wanting to play ball with M$ would pull a stunt like this."
So I guess we'll see once M$ inevitably says "go to hell"....message delivered courtesy of their army of lawyers.....if this hack ends up on the web. If not, it probably PR.
" if they just put the monitor in a curtained-off booth, that'd be enough privacy for me. hell, i have less privacy when i try on pants at the store. like i care if they can see my junk."
Its people like you that piss me off. Yeah, you're entitled to your opinion, but for gods sake don't ruin it for those of us who VALUE our privacy and don't want everybody staring at our naked bodies under any conditions. Its not like this is taking anything away from you since you don't have an issue with it, but for a vast number of people, this is taking away something very personal that has previously been impossible to implement on a large scale like this.

Combine the visions of the Disney, FBI, RIAA, Microsoft, stupid senators and SCO, makes Big Brother seem bearable in comparison:)"
Wrong, because if you were to truly combine their visions.....the government would not be an organization, but a tool used by them to enforce their 'laws' and take the publics attention away from them. Ie. "We didn't make it so you can't use your computer the way you wanted, the government did for security purposes."
"and crusie around the globe and pass over big cities so people can see it for themselves and watch as a "space craft" is above them. "

Many employees from telemarketing companies were 'laid off' today and mysteriously were seeking jobs working for the National DNC registry. Oddly enough, when asked what position they were looking for, they all answered "anything that works directly with the database of names and their numbers, preferably on a computer with a CD-Burner."
"You're really missing out.
Does BF1942 have a Persistent World? Characters you can level up?"
Well, those are two aspects of planetside that really made me want it....that and the MASSIVE battles where whole platoons are brought in on several dropships and stuff. I mean, in theory its awesome, and i was ready to drop the money for it once I had it. However, after reading up on it...it seems like a dumbed down FPS.
No head shots...there is a 'cone of fire' to help with the lag...so you really just have to pray-and-spray and hope you hit. And from the other things i've read...it really is all a question of who has the bigger gun. Whereas in bf1942..doesn't matter if someone has an assault rifle point at me if I can pop them once in the head with my pistol, which is how it should be. I also hear tanks take lots of damage from running over people. Are you KIDDING ME? Thats all I have to say about the tanks.
Otherwise I think its a pretty bitchin concept, and I wish a TRUE FPS would evolve to that massive of a gameworld with the same gameplay they offer now.
And the other poster is right, starwars would ROCK in this kind of game. Can you say Battle of Hoth? And then you grab an X-Wing and fly up high enough and you're in space with several star destroyers lookin at you. If someone could ever nail the game that solidly with SW, I think it would be a powerhouse.
BTW, there is currently a mod being developed for BF1942 based on StarWars. Here's the link.
