  1. Re:Information is not polluted or diluted. on Arthur C. Clarke on Information Pollution · · Score: 1

I would have to disagree. There is a big problem with information being incorrect or wrong due to profit motives or ignorance. It all looks the same, but there need to be sources of information we can trust.

For instance there are sites that have information about cars that run on water, or compression schemes which can compress themselves, instant weight loss and other schemes. Of course this is really only relevant to computer based information since it's so cheap and easy to produce.

Then there is information that simply is out of date like maps or telephone listings. Once information goes into the computer it loses touch with reality. That's net really a bad thing - we don't want computers to track our every move - but it does mean that the information can grow stale and inaccurate.

Yes, programmers on the other side of the globe will work cheaper then here - but then THEY get the knowledge and experience in creating those products.

In 5 years or so, when those programmers have cut their teeth on the project, there will be new Indian/cheap labeor country companies selling their own software - why let the US company get all the profit?? They will start their own company and sell directly to us.

I understand that this article is dealing with scientific papers, but this is just one of many complaints people have with the web, especially those who think of it as the whole internet.

It started out as a quick and simple stateless file server protocol, and it's good at that. The limitations have caused things like SSL, CGI, cookies to be created to fill in the gaps. Now people want to add versioning too. Sure, why not. Add some new headers in there and have a CVS like service that can backup old data and present the web page at any given point in time.

We would probably still have link rot because of people deleting their archives to save space, but it would be a step in the right direction.

The more recent database driven websites and blogs make the problem even more complicated. The server would have to detect when the output for the exact same URL changed.

Imagine the possibilities though. Add the date to a URL and 10 years from now people could see what the internet used to be like. Thankfully not back to when you could create a single page web site with a gray background and it could be a "Cool Site of the Day". :o)

I start a new fast company that makes great products, I want to take customers from my competitors. To do that they have to know I exist. They have all the market share, no one is going to search for my company. Even google is going to put them on the top of the list since everyone will link to THEM not me. So rather then put out some expensive media advertising, I can do it more cheaply by advertising on that search word. I'm not saying I am that company, just that people who search for that term should check me out.

For instance if people search for Microsoft IIS, I could advertise for "Apache - A better free alternative to IIS - click here for more info.".

I have nothing against properly identifying trademark holders, I just think that it is wrong to prevent people from advertise via Trademarked Words. For instance Microsoft has always had Migrating From Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP on MSN.Com when you search for the Trademark Linux.

It's standard marketing. Or are you suggesting we should just sue Microsoft/MSN next for not returning the Proper Trademark Owner as well?

If only Microsoft could be so smart. I have an old sound card that still works, but the company went under so there are no new drivers for XP and it won't work.
