Wow, I'm just like that. All through college (3 of them) I had the same problems. I've been out of college for years now, although I do teach at the local community college sometimes.

    Here's what works for me.
    - I tell someone else what my goals are and how I'm doing on them. My wife works nicely for that. Very nicely in fact since she reminds me about the mortgage, groceries, etc. Her Work for Sex exchange program is an excellent motivator too. Or more often, no money = more headaches.
    - I keep a piece of paper or white board handy and write down what I'm doing. I use it like a memory stack. Task A, A.1, A.1.1, and so on and I cross them off when I'm done. It's very easy when tracking a bug looking 12 different files and lots of different calling procedures and arguments to forget what your trying to accomplish in the first place. I used to go through a lot of paper, but it's helped me a lot.
    - Use SafeSex Software - a nice little utility from the makers of Winamp. It's always on top and a quick way to jot down your thoughts instead of paper once you get used to it. It's a little box on the desktop that says STAY FOCUSED. You can make it say what you want.
    - Since most of my projects involve using the same programs, I wrote a script to load them all at once on my desktop *AND* start my accounting program. Once I see that timer going and I know I'm billing the client, it's hard to start browsing the web. Since the IDE and Project files are open I get right to work.
    - Put slashdot.org in my HOSTS file as 127.0.0.1. I haven't had to do that in a long time, but for a while I was using it way to much. I feeling much better now. :o)

I agree, I would like to see a CF slot in the cheaper Palm devices. I love the Dell Axim - it's cheap and includes both a CF and an SD slot. If there were a $200 Palm device with these features I would buy it in an instant.

People have mentioned SDIO, but be aware that there are precious little SDIO devices out there yet. Almost everything is expected to come out in the near future, and most likely be high priced compared to the CF alternative.

I think another big problem for palm would be that there are no palm drivers for the existing CF products. I have 10/100 Ethernet, WiFi and Barcode scanners in CF modules as well as your basic memory. If palm suddenly came out with a CF slot tomorrow, I would still be waiting for manufacturers to produce drivers to make my CF cards work on my new device. I would also (gladly) have to rewrite my applications to take advantage of this new hardware on those devices.

That's another reason I haven't upgraded(?) to Windows Pocket PC 2003, or Mobile or whatever Microsoft has decided to call their latest patch - er, Operating System for handhelds. The drivers for many things still aren't stable on PocketPC 2003.

  10. Which License is more Viral and other Questions... on SCO Extorting Unixware Licenses to Linux Users? · · Score: 2, Interesting

The real question here is what is more viral - SCO's Unix licenses or the GPL.

SCO's license is for Derivitive Works of UNIX. IBM developed AIX from the Unix source tree. They can't just come up with AIX version 2 and decide not to pay SCO.

The GPL says that any software released under GPL must be released under GPL in any and all future versions and source code must be given. BOTH says all Derivative works must fall under the same license.

SCO is implying that IBM tried to take UNIX technology, put it into Linux and then ditch SCO licenses. Assume they are correct in their allegations. IBM, SCO or someone else released some code from a SCO Derivitive Work into the Linux Kernel.

Does Linux then become a Derivitive work of UNIX? Do parts of UNIX suddely become GPL? What if the code was originally from a 3rd party and in UNIX first, but freely available elsewhere? How much code must be transferred for these licenses to apply? Do the licenses cover the actual implementation or the algorithms used? Is removal of the code an acceptable solution when the order to do so may come down years later? What person or method could we trust enough to audit the code bases and decide what goes and stays?

Whatever the case may be, this long and drawn out lawsuit is bound to set some important precedents. The longer we wait, the more work that will be required *IF* code must be removed in the future after being built upon. The results of the Microsoft Monopoly case may have been disappointing, but this is IBM vs SCO battle with a Billion dollar prize.

In the end only the lawyers will be left standing.

I think many game development companies would be very interested in this if they can pull it off. Most of the profit to be made on a game is in the first few weeks after release. After that sales drop off incredibly. This is just another marketing channel.

They could sell their game for $40 all at once, or rent it to people for $5/month. So they get the same amount of money back in 8 months - and maybe more if people keep playing. The number of people who would pay $5 for a game to try it could make them lots more money the number about who would pay $40 to own it.

It's like buying a house. I won't/can't spend $200,000 up front, but I can pay $750 / month. Over the course of the loan I end up paying probably double what I would have if I paid all at once, but it's at a cash flow I can handle.

They will probably go after the Total Cost of Ownership like MS has been tossing around lately. A Console for $200 + 6 games @ $30 each may end up costing just about the same as this machine. If you could have a console with 20 or 30 games for the same price, it would easily win families over. Toss in a Netflix like N games at a time plan charged through your broadband utility company and it could be a big winner.

I agree with another poster that mentioned selinux. The NSA know how to write secure software and how to audit software and source code. Assuming they build their own binaries from the source it should be a relatively safe system. The only potential security problem I can see is that outsiders may know exactly what they are running. But assuming it's properly designed and implemented that shouldn't be a problem either. That's the why everyone like Linux/BSD so much.

Los Almos has a history of Physical Security problems that should cause more worries then this. Hard Drives disappearing and reporters sneaking in at night, getting locked in and then the guards let them out when they found them.
