  1. (Sorry, my whitespace was removed)

And by my final comment, what I meant to say is that I think this whole vaccination thing has reached a fever pitch. People just need to relax a little bit. How can you live so worried about what idiots think?

  2. Interesting. Here's what I don't hear anybody saying: Is the measles rate really very "high"? Certainly, it's higher than New York's last year, but how does it compare to Paris? London? I think it seems like NYC has less measles than London. And deaths? Sure, measles is really serious. But these days, is anybody actually dying from it? I kind of suspect this is just news theatre rather than a real (meaning interesting or significant) story. I have seen many a meme on reddit etc. calling people out for their weird beliefs about completely optional vaccinations like the flu and chicken pox.

  3. Pregnancy disclosure on The Dangers of Sharing Your Screen With Co-Workers (seattletimes.com) · · Score: 1

I had a boss once who accidentally disclosed her pregnancy with a Windows desktop notification that said something along the lines of "my pregnancy, week X. Now your baby is beginning to blah blah..." She had to recover the situation with a one-on-one meeting with each of us, to discuss the confidential nature of the disclosure. When she did eventually disclose to her boss the reaction was not supportive. She got screwed over by the company eventually, which was unfortunate.

The whole appeal of Gmail is to read Gmail in the nice Gmail client, where you can just search for your emails instead of trying to organize them. Who in their right mind would read the emails in a clunky mail reader like Mail.app? Apple's Mail program was great in the days of like, Tiger.

I was going to call you out on this, but just to be sure :) checked the first fucking paragraph(!!) of TFA.

Using administrative register data with information on family relationships and cognitive ability for three decades of Norwegian male birth cohorts, we show that the increase, turning point, and decline of the Flynn effect can be recovered from within-family variation in intelligence scores. This establishes that the large changes in average cohort intelligence reflect environmental factors and not changing composition of parents, which in turn rules out several prominent hypotheses for retrograde Flynn effects

I also agree - this is super interesting. My first thought is that the trend was caused by mass immigration over the last 40 years. NOPE.

My next guess is actually: drugs.

What you are saying about monorail is untrue and is one of the most common misconceptions about the technology. Years ago I saw a video of a track switch operating on the Tokyo Haneda Line. I can't find it now, unfortunately. Monorail track is incredibly simple - either a single iron rail or else in the case of, say, Disneyland, just an extruded block of concrete. Still, you can make movable blocks of concrete, with curved cuts in them to make a smooth switch surface.
