I hate the fact that it often crashes and leaves phantom processes you have to use a thrid party app to kill
Never happens to me -- you have to remember, though, that Notes is a resource hog so you need to open it after your other apps. And don't keep it running all day.
I also hate that the only new mail notification is a pop up dialog
What's wrong with that? It also flashes in the taskbar. This isn't enough?
I also hate that when you delete a message, instead of going to the trash a little trash bin icon appears next to it. If you want it out of your face, you have to drag it to the trash
Huh? You do realize that when you press [Del] you're only marking the item for deletion, yes? Press [F9], and all the messages marked for deletion magically disappear. No fuss, no muss.
you have to run it full screen for it to be useful because the default designs are so wasteful of space.
Again, huh? My Notes Mail window looks almost like an Outlook window -- folder/view list down the left side, messages on the right, preview pane at the bottom. What's so wasteful about that? Hell, we didn't even modify the standard mail view.
Nothing like being forced to use the worst email system ever written while you're at work.
I'm sorry you have to use Outlook/Exchange. Oh, sorry -- you were talking about Notes? What's so bad about Notes? You hate the fact that it's secure? You hate the fact that you rarely (if ever) get viruses? You hate the fact that you can't set up automatic spell-check before a message is sent? (OK, I hate that last one too.)
Probably not, but with that kind of attitude is sounds you're in the upswinging majority of laptop users who don't perform any kind of backup. Without 4.75GB of writable removable media, you're unlikely to be backing up any reasonable amount of data any time soon.
Who said I don't back up data? All work-related data on my ThinkPad is stored on the network. Anything I do while undocked is automatically backed up there by a login script when I get back to the office. As for home stuff, I don't keep that much data that I can't.zip it and copy up to a floppy or two, or even a Zip drive.
As for the Centra recordings, they're.AVI or occasionally.WMV) files. Yep, we're a Microsoft shop, but the recordings tend to be long. Hence the faster desktop workstation. (Otherwise I'd be in the office all night.)
To quote ars technica, "...[burning dvds] isn't just a luxury, it's a requirement";-)
I must be a complete troglodyte, because I don't have a need to burn DVDs. Neither do any of my friends or colleagues. There is the occasional CD backup of a recorded Centra session, but that's done in the studio on a beefy workstation. And watching movies on a laptop? Not so much.
Am I the only person left who only uses his laptop as a computer instead of as a home entertainment center? (Not flamebait, but a genuine question.)
Pay attention to the laptops in TV/magazine/newspaper ads, not to mention TV shows, music videos...and of course movies...by far, Apple Powerbooks are the laptop of choice
Nowadays, yep. But when the first Vaio came out (PCG-505F), you saw them all over the place. Hell, I bought one. And it's still going strong despite the slow processor (P-233), lack of memory (32mb), low screen resolution (800x600 max), and abysmal battery life (I've never gotten more than an hour or so). I still love it -- it's tiny and purple and I've never had a day's trouble with it.
If only it had a pointing stick instead of that stupid touchpad.
Colin Baker? He always made a better bad guy than a Doctor
Funny -- he's my favorite Doctor. They say that your first Doctor is your favorite Doctor, but I started watching in the Tom Baker era and he's my least favorite. Go figure.
...and every Doctor. I mean, you couldn't find seven more different types than William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy (I'm not including Paul McGann or Peter Cushing because they were only in movies).
I should drop my plan down, but they'd charge me out the ass to do that so...
Mmm, yeah, there is that. Another reason might be nights & weekends -- the only reason I haven't changed my plan lately is that I have 8pm N&W, and Sprint went to 9pm a while back. I want to keep my 8PM.
Why should you get to take your mobile number with you if you switch carriers? You don't have the same privilege with your land line
Ah, but I do -- if I switch from Verizon to AT&T for local calls, I don't have to change phone numbers. As long as I don't physically move out of the neighborhood, I can keep the same number no matter WHO I use as my phone company.
That's what my firm uses. For those who absolutely have to have AIM connectivity as well (for client communication) you can configure the Sametime client to access your AIM buddy list too.
Interesting, though -- my firm requires that we purge e-mails after 15 months, not three years.
Oh, by "solicitors" you mean "salesmen"? Never mind.
Mod parent up! +1 Funny

Whoops -- meant to say "they did it in 7.02". Mea culpa.
You mean it isn't the same all across the US?
