As others commented, your best bet is to clear out a week or so, with the scheduled launch early in the week, so if it's delayed a couple days, you can still catch it. That's what the wife and I did a couple years back, to catch a launch.
As for viewing the launch, as damn_registrars said, unless you've got a good buddy in high government to get you a pass, or a NASA Press Pass, you won't be all that close. You can either watch from the Visitors Center, but, IIRC, you can't actually see the launch towers from there, get there early and grab a spot on one of the public roads around the Cape, or, watch from the Astronaut Hall of Fame / Space Camp roof (if they're still doing that)
Because the profits, go back to a corporation that is headquartered in Japan. That's why a car that's made in Mexico, from parts made in China, and steel from Japan, can be called an "American" car, when it's got a Chrysler / GM / Ford badge on it.
My current box hosting VMs is the following: Core2 Duo 6600 4GB Ram 2 100+GB HDs (might be 250s, don't recall off hand) MB is a Supermicro X7SBA (probably the most expensive part)
I'm using MS Hyper-V server (I'm not a Linux user), and it works quite well. Yeah, I can't run 10 different VMs simultaneously, but I can run what I need for learning / experimentation, etc.
and be done with it. No more DST. So, if it were decided that next spring, would be the year, everyone would adjust their clocks by 1/2 hour forward, and then never adjust them (for DST) again. If you're a state that doesn't do DST, tough, adjust your clock to match everyone else in the time zone, you won't be doing it again, anyways.
I've got the 5.7L Hemi ('06 Charger R/T w/perf package), and I've always thought having at least an idiot light in the gauges to indicate when the MDS is active would be nice.
I don't know about the manual mode, I would think trying to pull such a fairly heavy car (~4000lbs), with only 4 cylinders, while still having the remaining 4 cylinders generating some resistance, would not improve your fuel economy, and might even hurt it...
I do mostly city driving, and relatively short runs at that (about 10 miles one way to work), and according to the in-car computers MPG estimate, I'm still getting around 17.5-17.9 mpg. Most of my route to work is 35-45mph, and plenty of stop lights.
OTOH, I can go from my house to Cedar Point Ohio (amusement park), about 133 miles one way, on about a 1/2 tank of gas, setting the cruise control at 65mph, and leaving it.
And what about people in older houses, or small houses, or houses with small lots? Where will they keep this "large" tank of water?
I live in a ~1000sqft home, with a moderate sized lot (corner house), so I could put a "large" (several hundred gallon) tank of water in the back corner of my lot.
But, my neighbors, don't have quite as much room. Are they to be SOL?
Who's going to pay / help pay / subsidize / give me a loan to pay for the large amount of work that will be required to switch my home from a forced air heating system (gas furnace), to your "hot water" heating?
Nice idea, not very practical for the majority of the population. New construction, maybe. Developing nations, maybe. Large amounts of the US and Canada, not likely...
After thinking on this, I figured I'd suggest an author I've enjoyed. Relatively new, but well worth the read. Start them with Orbital Decay, and work through to Labyrinth of Night.
Another good choice would be Headcrash, by Bruce Bethke, very amusing (ProctoProd! TM) in it's own way, although not "hard" scifi, more cyberpunk (without being dark)
Godzilla movie from the POV of the civilians...

Is what this basically was. Went to see it last night, good movie, but really not living up to the hype from before it came out. I'm already predicting the following:
1. Movie at least turns a profit on the theatrical release 2. DVD with some extras comes out 3. "Special Edition" DVD comes out with second disc with more back story (WTF *was* the monster?) 4. "Directors Cut Special Edition" DVD comes out with nearly a second movie on the third disc, with even *more* back story... 5. ***PROFIT***;-)
Seeing a robot plant an American flag on Mars could be equally awe-inspiring, if widely televised.
Frankly, no, it wouldn't be. I feel part of the problem with any sort of interest in the space program right now, is we're not *going* anywhere. Back when NASA was getting men into space, and heading for the moon, large numbers of kids wanted to be astronauts, and go into space. Now, NASA is spinning their wheels, sending robots everywhere, and kids all want to be sports stars or music stars.
If / when the space program (private or NASA) starts going *somewhere,* people will start to become interested again. I would expect that watching a robot plant a flag on Mars would attract a lot fewer viewers than seeing a person (male or female) stepping foot on Mars, and the heck with the flag planting. Seeing people do such a thing is *far* more awe-inspiring simply *because* it is people. Robots can get sent anywhere, but you can't look at a robot and think "that could be me!" when you're a kid. Seeing a person step foot on another planet (even our Moon again), you can see yourself doing the same thing.
For myself, I really want to see mankind get back on the move. Get a moon base started, get men to Mars, start *going somewhere.*
When I was a kid, the shuttle was going to get us out into space, and make space travel possible for the every-man. Then, the "1 month" turn-around became "12+ months," and then we had Challenger. Now, we've got private industry looking at getting into space without waiting for NASA, we've got Virgin Galactic, we've got Hyatt (I think?) looking at putting up somewhere for Virgin Galactic to *go*
If you already own these, and buy the Orange Box, you get an e-mail coupon, allowing you to *give* those two games to *anyone.* All they need to do is sign up for (if they don't already have it) a Steam account. You also do not have to give both to the same person.
There's a reason why I'll just sit and wait until the tail end of the line of people getting off is past me...
No sense in trying to jam into the aisle, with a carry-on, while everyone else is trying to as well...
One reason I'm glad that when I go on vacation this X-Mas, me and the wife have window seats. No one trying to rush off the plane, needing to get past us, and forcing us to try to get up and leave...
I figure we'll loaf in the seats, either until the end of the line is past, or until the stews ask us to get moving....
That most states use some or all of the fuel taxes to help defray the cost of road improvements / maintenance (no one said they do a *good* job of this) Someone who is "home-brewing" fuel, whether it be bio-diesel, ethanol, or used cooking oil, ends up essentially using the roads for "free" as they don't pay the fuel tax.
I few options might be to allow home-fuelers to purchase a license (cheap), and be expected to pay more on the yearly state taxes. The license would allow the state to put the tax payment on the honor system (sort of like Michigans' expectation that people will report how much stuff they bought over the internet, and pay the appropriate state taxes on it), with some sort of check. Perhaps a random checking of X percent of the licensees state tax return, and go after the people who didn't pony up. Even go so far as to keep it (relatively) friendly, offer them the chance to pay the extra, no penalty, no crime, if they pay, subject dropped, if not, get mean. By keeping it friendly, there would be the hope of more people switching, get enough people using home-fueling, and then you can start selling licenses for fuel stations, providing alternative fuel(s), and charging the state fuel tax per-gallon, and phase out the licenses at that time.
While I don't know about the laws here in Michigan regarding this sort of thing, I know they've been floating the idea of doing away with the gas tax, and instead raising the sales tax. The thinking being that this would get visitors from out-state paying a bit more, so even if they don't fill up, they're still paying (some) towards the roads they drive on...
You and me both. 3 Model Ms at home, and one at work. Only problem I've ever had was when the wife somehow managed to jam hers into the keyboard jack on the PC, and broke off the plastic alignment key...
Keyboard probably still works, although I've got it tossed in a closet for now...

IPv6 Tested in Space

No, testing it in space isn't pointless! If the IPv6 stack fails catastrophically, there's no one around to be hurt by the flying shrapnel!
I mean after all it might even potentially set the Earths atmosphere on fire, if it were testing on the ground!
I recall, back when this was getting kicked around the first time out (what 2-3 years ago now?), I came across a posting on Asia Carreras' (a now retired porn "actress" with two kids) web site, where she basically said she supported the idea of a domain exclusively for porn sites.
My prediction (if it goes through) would be that the current owners of porn sites on.com/.net/.org addresses, will (presuming they get the equivalent.xxx domain) put up a redirect to the new page. After a couple months or more of this, the redirect goes away, and the non-.xxx address eventually goes back up for sale (or they keep it registered for themselves, especially if it's a trademark)
As for the no user name being displayed, I know for sure you can set up a Windows (ducks blasts of flame) system to *not* display the previously logged in username. Heck in an Active Directory, it's in the Group Policy settings, and can be done on all the PCs in the AD...
And yes, I manage a (smallish 45-50 computers incl servers) AD at work.
Heh. That's where everyone in the division slipping into her office after she's left for the holiday a full 1/2 day before the staff (who have to work a full day if they want the pay), and then pouring said maple syrup on her desk, followed by putting a sign on the door for cleaning staff to not clean the office that weekend....
Then, pinning up on the wall by the door, notices that everyone has quit. She'd have one heck of a surprise come the first workday (she comes back) after the holiday....
