  1. Re:RFCs are requirements documents, not design on What Makes a Good Design Document? · · Score: 1

If I had mod points, I'd give them all to you!

I've recently graduated from university with a CS degree. I've had practical work experience developing n-tier systems and I can tell you that a lot of people always confuse these two aspects of systems engineering. In the few documents I've seen (this seems to be another problem, but I'll leave that to another discussion), it is all but common-place to list requirements followed by a blurb on implementation details.

I was fortunate enough, through my instruction, to learn the significant difference between requirements and design and that they need to be seperated. A requirements document should be able to be picked up by anyone and give them the ability to draft a design document for their specific implementation, e.g. coding it in VC++ instead of Java (though language can sometimes be a requirement) or using one sorting algorithm over another.

  3. First thing.. on Cooler Servers or Cooler Rooms? · · Score: 3, Insightful

That comes to mind is that it will probably be vastly cheaper to cool a rackmount specifically than to lower the ambient temperature of an entire room to the point that it has the same effect. However, I'm not entirely sure how well this scales to large server farms and multiple rackmounts.

I think the best option would be to look at having the hardware produce less heat in the first place. This would definitely simplify the rumbling these engineers are engaged in.

Sympatico limits traffic to 5 Gb/mth I believe, though I'm not a subscriber and I'm only going by word of mouth. Rogers, however, imposes no such limits (If they do, they are extremely large and I have yet to run in to them). I have yet to have my service disconnected, even though I've exceeded 20 Gb/mth download only. I've been a cable user since 1997.

They both clearly advertise their maximum speeds and inform you that you may not always get this, especially during peak hours. I've found that downloading overnight is incredibly fast, usually averaging 300 Kb/s.
