my foil is fraying-- i just ordered a dozen of these puppies and figure i can stitch them together into a new cap in an hour or so and HOO BOY i'll FINALLY be as smart as those aliens who keep beaming into my head, since nothing can stop those beams, so i might as well improve my gray matter's ionization oscillation potentialized frequency... potential.
...a Bluetooth stereo headset like this Blueant rig. The biggest problems seem to be (1) a fragmented US cell phone market and (2) limited Bluetooth capabilities on the few phones that have it at all. Wouldn't it take a large company to crack these two nuts, and couldn't they be cracked by dealing with manufacturers and service providers at the same time?
Apple's iPod hardware buddy HP seems to sell might-look-good-in-white, curiously out-of-stock bluetooth stereo headphones, but without a mic. Hmmm...
In terms of GIMP versus PhotoShop...
There's something free that sucks, and there's something not free that is amazing. In these parts, we recommend the free one.
Typical/. reply. Go encode your music in OGG again, but this time do it more efficiently... [sigh].
You want to give them something "live" with a "WOW" factor, just get them a puppy. It will make less a mess of their lives than trying to switch their AOL surfing, iTunes listening, Microsoft Office using computing lifestype to your fsck'ing geek OS.
A puppy is the gift that keeps on giving-- they'd have a better notion of what to do with a puppy's "gift" on the carpet than how to answer the most basic Linux installation questions.
"Boot" from a CD? What does that mean? A puppy will be chewing on some boots while your CD is on the way to the landfill...
As long as there are normally piloted vehicles on the roads, this won't work. There are so many incosistent things to deal with when driving, I don't believe it can work. At the same time, I look forward to climbing in the back seat for a nap while in motion-- "Um, car, would you please turn the radio way up when we get there?"
Folks who didn't grow up with computers and databases everywhere have learned *correctly* NOT to ignore notices from financial institutions-- people work hard for their $$$ and credit rating and reply promptly to notices because systems have always broken down.
The lesson to learn is that when an account is online, you have to KEEP YOUR OWN LINKS. That way, (1) if you don't have an account with an institution, ignore the mail, or (2) if you do, use the front door you've used before.
This guideline is all anybody needs to protect themselves from these scams.
While potential competitors finally realize that they have to match the iPod on specs (big HDD capacity, fast xfer), they'll lose out because Apple doesn't stand still.
As soon as the "killer" 4-5GB players come out for ~$250, expect Apple to trump them all with (1) color screens and iPhoto sync (in the works), (2) Bluetooth headphone interface (courtesy of HP), and (3) bigger HDD capacity.
AM/FM tuning and voice note recording seem trivial and probably are on the timeline too... while Ogg support probably is not.
How long does it take to encode, say, 1GB of mp3 data to "Atrac3"? How big will that data be in "Atrac3"? How will the quality compare? Are there free programs to encode this data?
While the "check out my cool life" blogs get most of the press, the reality is that there are lots and lots of sites that use blog-type software to control publication. Slashdot, for example, is just a blog with a thick layer of automated security tacked onto its "comment" features.
As a method for handling ANY site which needs regular updating, blogs can't be beat.
Of course, make sure to check out manyforms, or do a lucky Google search for it...:o
XP is too prone to "whoreware" (what you'd call shareware, spyware, free trials, etc.) that demands money for real functionality and just leaves you with a virus. The fact that the system imposes so few standards (and the standards it does impose, when they belong to others, are deliberately corrupted by Microsoft) makes for an inconsistend (read: "bad") user experience. I prefer OS X at home, and happily run Linux at work (where I have no choice).
Mac is a wooden box, linux is a metal box, windows is a cardboard box.
OT but here goes-- give up this iPod battery thing. MANY MANY MANY things have soldered-in rechargeable batteries that CAN be replaced by authorized service centers. My Bosch electric razor recently died and it was not difficult to replace the battery myself with a little hot solder.
ON topic, though, it seems like, um, PanIP sucks like a slashdot spammer... mod child up!
It's great for iPod to support WMA files-- more PC makers will jump on the bus (like HP). Interesting that it will take Apple's approval for WMA to get anywhere. There's likely more $$$ in iPods than in iTMS, and more in iPod licensing than iPod manufacturing...
It serves Apple's interests to be inclusive-- like picking up USB 2.0 without blinking. Apple should adopt whatever formats have users behind them.
Pixar didn't take lightly to this. They launched a lawsuit against Exluna saying they were violating certain patents they held regarding some antialiasing algorithms. Never mind that the renderer was far more advanced and was a complete drop in replacement for Pixar's competing product. This was a straight up ploy to get rid of the competition.
This oversimplifies the dispute between Pixar and Exluna as I understand it. Antialiasing algorithms are NOT TRIVIAL. This stuff is used in nuclear engineering (Efficient Light Propagation for Multiple Anisotropic Volume Scattering for details). Building efficient systems to solve these sampling problems is quite a large task. When some in-the-know folks passed between Pixar and Exluna (BMRT), and antialiasing subsequently improved at Exluna, Pixar said "hey wait a second..."
Apart from that, renderers are not a huge business, but GPU's are-- I bet the Exluna/BMRT folks will end up doing fine.
These are nice renderings of a nice design, but not photographs of a physical thing. What is exciting is that screens on everything will be getting as big as possible...

The unit itself is only shown as a CG image-- it looks like an _idea_ for a unit.
Was this shown in Paris or not?
I doubt every "check out this cool new thing they rendered!" post on /.

In the big scheme of things, this seems like Dell's successful bid to get lots of free press by casting themselves as legitimate iPod competitors.
You'll never hear Apple mentioning anybody else's player... until somebody makes one better.

if there were a SINGLE event of "explosion" it would be big news. shades of cell phone gas station scare.
