I have never met anyone in Canada that pronounces "about" as "aboot". Do any of you know where this originates?
Funny, I've hardy met any who didn't. Even in Toronto, where there is scarcely any accent to be noticed, every time I heard someone say about there was a slight 'oo' in it. It probably has to do with what each individual is used to hearing. I knew a British girl whose mother was American who honestly could not tell the difference between American and British accents. -
I was about to post my gut reaction to this posting right off, but I RTFA, and my gut reaction turned out to be well founded. The article begins with an overused logically broken analogy to the USSR. Classic right wing FUD. Then arguing to let the courts decide disputes over the spectrum? Sure the FCC is a slow and backwards bureaucratic nightmare, but the legal system is just as bad. And the idea of selling pieces of the spectrum outright is absurd. One can no more 'own' part of the spectrum than they can own the right to speak at a certain intonation, and regardless, future advances in technology will render current methods for breaking up the spectrum arcane and useless. Finally, we cannot allow such reckless deregulation; allowing industry to police itself is like the fox guarding the henhouse. I agree that the FCC is a wreck, but killing it is not the answer.
If a person has unfettered physical access to a machine there is NO security. I would suggest locking down the computer just as you would in a lab, but that alone is not enough. You would need to re-image the machine on a regular basis. It also couldn't hurt to physically lock the case shut.
It would be a lot less trouble to just offer a ethernet and WiFi hookup and let guests use their own laptop.
While it is deeply unfortunate that the people working at the café who were just doing their jobs had to suffer, this does not come as much of a surprise. Injustice incites violence. Democratic countries have seen tremendous violence over the injustices they have commited (US civil rights movement, the IRA, etc) and the same is bound to occur in totalitarian countries. I understand restricting a minors access to information is nothing compared to what was inflicted upon Ireland by Britain or upon minorities in the US, but it only one part of the larger injustice commited by a criminal state. It is wonderful that kid's are forming organized resistance to the injustices of thier country at such a young age, even if their specific actions were misguded.
I only turn off my G4 and iBook for software updates, and put them to sleep when they are not in use. While there is some lag on wake (~1 sec. on iBook, 2-4 sec. on G4) this is far preferable to turning the machines off or keeping them awake. I never have any problems with it.
A couple of posts, as well as the original post allude to the potential use of this technology to the pornography industry. While I realize that it is a multibillion dollar industry, and could certainly afford to utilize high end CG, I wonder how the cost-benifit ratio would work out. After all, paying engineers is obviosly more costly than paying hores.
I've been trying to buy one of these for a while. I've reasearched other PDA's and every time I end up finding some feature or another that makes me prefer the Newton. I would pay 100 clams for a good 2100 in a heartbeat, but where can you find one? Everything on EBay is overpriced on in poor condition and still overpriced, and anywhere else the prices are even worse!
Great idea. Everybody should use the same operating system. It is only natural that the entire OS market be dominated by one product. Why didn't I think of that?
I still use my old Sun optical mousepad. Works great, and sure is pretty. Besides, it's the only Sun hardware I have that is still good for production use.
Good luck breathing near a road though! There are emission standard for a reason. I really like living in Michigan but the one thing I can't stand is that the damned auto industry owns the government. The big three have done a lot for this state, but they have also damaged it just as much. Consider the following:
> NO viable public trasportation > Pollution (look at the Detroit river, and everything downstream) > Flint?
Since I use a Mac and refuse to download wmp I had to dig through the source of the page in order to find the video file and play it in VLC. Turns out the name of the file for the Vader redemtion clip is aprilfools_redemption_02.wvx
Only the original release of 4.0. I still have a copy on a back up hard drive. I'd serve it up on my site, but I don't really feel like being slashdotted. That, and I need to get to bed. Mmmmm sleep.
They modded me 40% troll, but nobody can reply to me. I can smell fear.

The time has come to make the commission protect communications the way the EPA protects the environment.
Not very well?

Too bad the Safari prefs aren't so wide open...

I recall a 007 movie in which M jokes about the US getting inteligence from CNN, but this is absurd!

I meant in good condition.

Sincerly, Bill Gates

Except those cost estimates are absurd... -
Wait until OS X 10.5 Lynx is released...

Hmm...
Linux + Windows = Lindows
Linux + Mac = Lac ??

Are you nuts? That is just more ads they can afford. That is by no means a good thing!
And wmp isn't??

How would you split your LAN traffic across two T-1 lines?
Very happily!

Personally, I use command-s. Crazy clutterd windows toolbars make me woozy.
