    In my experience, it's not windows that's the problem, but the actual ATM software.

    I can almost guarantee that if the developers and put the same skill in to developing a linux variant, we'd see them compromised just as often.

    A megabyte is not equal to a megabyte, necessarily.

    For instance, let's say I have a credit card processing server going across the same WAN link as web traffic ( for other workstations ). Obviously the web traffic is lower priority than the payment traffic.

    As it applies to cell phones; maybe iphone users use their devices differently from other devices? Who knows, it's more likely cell phone companies bilking their customers ( as always ), but my point is that not all MBs are the same.

    The comparison between AQ and Assange is unfair; one is in the business of FUD, the other factual.

    I don't like wikileaks, but I support what they are doing; you can't have good government if the government is not afraid of the governed finding out about it's behaviors.

    I think it's important to define the word "Cloud" as no one else seems to, yet the definition itself lends great insight to the concept.

    The "Cloud", as referenced here, is nothing more than the delegation of responsibilities...specifically those of infrastructure. That's it. It's not some mystical cure all. In fact, it's nothing more than a glorified way to outsource applications.

    Now there are specific technologies which lend themselves to this concept ( those of virtualization, certainly ), but the overall goal is the same; the business doesn't want to worry about the infrastructure behind their app. They simply want it to work.

    Which is why internal "clouds" have always amused me to no end...

    Honestly, of all those reasons it was the first that got me to stop playing. You'd have crews that were cheating and they'd use the missions as farming opportunities. With no way to leave a mission, users who weren't cheating would get stuck in a fucked up treadmill.

    Of course, the reason this was so frustrating is because the game did have potential. It was fun...in spurts. But it had a long way to go.

    Then maybe you shouldn't use ubuntu when you have to work on .doc?

    It's all about using the right tool for the job. If you are constantly needing access to advanced MS Office documents, then maybe you should use the right tool to access these documents and not what you want to use.

    I get it, I do. MS is evil and we all hate them because they are evil. Right. But I don't really care about that, I just care about working as efficiently as possible.

    OpenOffice, and all the oracle crap that is inevitable. Or MS office.

    For my purposes, I choose MSOffice. Sure, I'm supporting the "Evil" MS, but I don't really care about that. I just need something that works, and like it or not, that's MS Office.

    iPhone is more a competitor than the android devices , by simple virtue of the consistency of quality. Corporations are all about "known qualities". As much as I love my android device, the quality varies greatly by brand. Whereas the iphone is an iphone is an iphone.

    I was hoping MS would see an opportunity here. That may still happen too; blackberries are good only by virtue of being the only game in town.

    ...and it never was. It's about long term sales. MS is late to the game, when the market is already approaching optimal saturation. For them, they won't see the huge initial growth that the other platforms did.

    What they are banking on, and what I am watching for, is their staying power. If MS has learned anything, it's patience. They have the war chest and experience to play the "slow and steady" game.

    This assumes that they have something unique to offer. I see them as being in one of the best positions to challenge RIM ( I wish to $diety SOMEONE would. Blackberries suck ass, and the server is only fun to administrate if you are a masochist ).

    This may be geographical then; our operators are constantly submitting the laptop to IT because it's "broken". What's broken about it? We never get a clear answer, but it would seem to be simply that they don't want to use it.

    I have tried to get these same people using a computer, and it's painful to watch them spend upwards of half a minute looking for a key on the keyboard, and at the first sign of trouble they bail out and blame everything but themselves ( like when they spend five minutes trying to type something, only to find they didn't have the right field selected. They didn't notice because they were so focused on the keyboard ).

    Maybe it's different elsewhere, that would certainly be encouraging.

    ...I will say that training is going to be your biggest hurdle. But I'm sure you know this. Water and waste water technicians are, in my experience, terrified of technology. This manifests as an unwillingness to use technology and a hostility when forced to do so.

    Other than that, treat it as you would any other service that could potentially kill people, or more importantly, lose your next election ( I know how politicians think ); Lock down the subnet, do not provide access to this remotely on equipment you do not own ( ie: no home systems connecting up for scada work ). VPN with two factor ( RSA keyfobs are pretty easy to implement against an ASA anymore ), with municipality provided laptops.

    But again, it comes back to training. Good luck with that, I never was able to get that worked out ( although my hands were tied by those in charge, so maybe there's a lesson in there for you ).

    IANAPB, so correct me if I'm wrong...but isn't the entire concept of being "more evolved" a bit...fuzzy? It's not as if there is a standard, objective metric related to evolution. Like the number of genes, or the complexity of our chromosomes ( don't mind me, I just like making it sound good ). In fact, evolutionarily speaking, are there some cases where the "simpler" organism has an evolutionary edge of the more complex organism strictly because of that simplicity?

    You pretend it's my choice. Humanity has a long and tragic history of not changing until they need to.

    Good luck fighting against that tide.

    But don't worry, even if we wait until the last drop of oil is extracted from the ground, we won't find ourselves thrust back to the 1700s, as you seem so hopeful for. The dynamics are all wrong. There are too many people, and too many options for starters.

    I don't pretend this change over would be pleasant, certainly not. But I doubt it'd be any worse than what we've already seen in the past century and a half.

    The most likely of scenarios, certainly.

    OR...and I'm just throwing this out there...OR we exploit sustainable power technology we have already developed, but at this time is too expensive when viewed against fossil fuels.

    But hey, I dig that we all like doom and gloom around here, so don't let my logic and rational discourse dissuade you from that.

    Back when I was growing up, we had those quaint little videos where the Statue of Liberty's hand was the only thing showing above the ocean. And a grandfather was passing on his wisdom to his grand daughter about what they could have done differently to avoid this coast catastrophe. Which happened in 2020.

    Now, I know we're still 10 years out, but I would expect NY to be at least a couple inches under water by now.

    Humanity will adapt and survive. That's our strength. Fossil fuels run out? We'll figure something else out..oh, we already have. It's just not cheaper than fossil fuels...yet.

    Maybe it's OSS, maybe it's not. But drop your bias right now before you research associated costs.

    What are you using your tablet for? I have never understood what problem a tablet is trying to solve.

    I could see if it was a replacement for something like a notebook ( which I carry around daily ), but current tablets don't do that; the input method is clunky and unwieldy, I can still work significantly faster on my plain old notebook with a pen than a tablet.

    So what's it good for?
