Dude...switch off the sarcasm. Before google, we were getting a measly 4MB from Yahoo. Google pushed the bar and made large mailboxes a standard.

  2. Love the UI on Google Launches Mapping Service · · Score: 1

Sure, it's still rough on the edges (text and textbox inputs on the right are overlapping the map image), but it's amazing improvement over the others, and decent for a beta release.

First and foremost, I find the click-and-drag function on the map so much more appealing than the "click north" of mapquest and yahoo maps. Many minor yet significant factors like clearer indication of highway on/off ramps (mapquest doesn't even have ramps), actual width dimensions of the roads (as opposed to thick/thin lines), more pleasant color schemes (less contrast...mapquest's red highways hurt the eyes!), and very smooth integration with Google Local.

The directions seem to work well, and I think the most important improvement in the directions is the ability to zoom and pan in to any portion of the route to see it clearer (as opposed to the standard origin and destination zoomed maps provided by competitors

Google Maps has just won over the heart of one more customer!

I really don't get how being paid to play MMORPGs constitutes as sweatshop labor. Here in the U.S., people pay money to online services to play MMORPGs. Besides sweating in an unairconditioned room, I don't see how such would violate any human rights laws. In fact, it creates more jobs in a new industry to aid third-world citizens who otherwise might be unemployed. There really is no case there.

  5. Security Issues on PC Mag Reviews Mercora P2P Radio · · Score: 3, Insightful

Seems like more than one /.er has reported spyware being bundled (specifically Grokster), contrary to the PC Mag reports. Whether or not the spyware was intentionally bundled, this type of technology creates many security issues.

Desktop search apps have recently been under much scrutiny for privacy issues, such that the content read by the apps could be revealed to outside sources. However, desktop searches could theoretically operate without a connection to the internet, which means that a simple block of the program's access to external IPs should be able to prevent this from happening.

The whole basis of Mercora, on the other hand, is that it automatically searches the hard drive and streams the content to a public network. First off, I don't understand the business model of distributing free software to the public and then offering to pay royalties on every song broadcasted. No revenues & high costs = doom. Therefore, it appears likely that the company is operating on the premises of bundled spyware, as reported by some users. Needless to say, spyware itself creates enough privacy and security issues, but that is not even the worst of it.

Say some kiddie hacker reverse-engineers the technology and uses it to create a worm that searches computers for sensitive document formats (e.g. *.doc, *.xls, *.pdf come to mind) and broadcasts them to the public domain? Will Mercora's parent company pay for the damages done with this kind of scenario?

I am deeply disappointed that a reputable source like PC Mag gave this a 4/5 rating without alerting the public of the possible security issues with this technology.

Of course, you can argue that the cost of the phones is built into the ultra expensive plans in the US(compared to a $6/mo 500 anytime unltd. night/weekend I had in Taiwan), but I am a lowly consumer with no control over those factors, so I might as well be satisfied with what I have.

  14. Friendster Groups on Friendster Fights Fakesters · · Score: 2, Insightful

One of the biggest problems with this arbitrary deleting of accounts is that they are also deleting the accounts which represent groups/institutions people may belong to. For example, I added a "friend" which represented the college I attend, and it had been deleted recently due to this cleanup. I have met several people from my own school whom I would otherwise not have known existed due to this connection, and that account was deleted because it did not represent a real-live human being. My friend was also pissed off because by "friending" an account named after a celebrity, she was able to connect with many other fans of that celebrity, yet now that account may soon be deleted as well because it is "fake". Since friendster advertises itself as a system to connect to people of similar interests (as opposed to a dating service), it should continue to allow such accounts

meanwhile, since it will soon charge, my friends and I are switching over to Ringo, another similar free service which seems to be the most popular alternative.

I don't understand all the heat against ICQ...I've been using it since the beginning, proudly maintaining a 6-digit UIN. It's been the most popular and dominating IM client outside the US for years, due to its ability to send offline messages, appear invisible (so as to be able to talk to only those contacts that you need to without being disturbed by others), talk to someone while away (same reason), change screennames all the time (so that you won't be stuck with hUnniEaZnrIceRbabIEqTypiE14 after you graduate), successfully search for other users (to find that long-lost high school friend of yours), participate in random chat with users of the same interest(instead of randomly typing sn's), send/receive messages through other systems such as SMS/email/web pages, unicode support (ungarbled foreign languages), birthday reminders (forgot the birthday of that cute girl you met in the dining hall?), game/external program support, and many other features. If it wasn't for the fact that all my American friends are too lazy to change their AIM, I wouldn't even have it on my computer. I take that back...actually I don't...I'm loyal to my trillian, which works wonders across all (IM) systems!
