  3. Re:They should make their own open-source software on Stanford Learns a Software Lesson · · Score: 1

Actually, Stanford tends to use a fair amount of student contributed software. During my time there, the students wrote the software that provided webmail access, course evaluations, remote login/printer accounts, an many other facilities. The residential computing group (maintains networks in dorms, etc) was primarily staffed by students and used all kinds of student implemented tools. Hell, I myself wrote some code for their undergrad advising center.

Some of the student SW was more effective than other bits (the webmail program sucked ass, but the rescomp stuff was pretty solid). All told though, students contributed all kinds of projects/tools for campus use.

Iron Chef America was a lot of fun but I was extremely disappointed with the tasters. If you can't eat food of all shapes, sizes, textures and flavors, you shouldn't be a taster. The chefs created amazing food, with an extrodinary amount of creativity but the tasters were afraid of it.

The guy from the Sopranos (Bug Pussy?) was ridiculous. He had no business being on the show. They need to get tasters with some taste.

AB was great though. Choosing him to be the commentator was wise.

Does anyone really care about Mario or Zelda or Pokemon anymore?

Yep. Windwaker was one of the best games I've ever seen. The thing with the Nintendo franchises is that they are now more about brands than the characters/universes themselves. You know when you buy a Zelda game that it is going to be an awesome open-ended gaming experience. Same with Metroid. I'm not saying Nintendo hasn't missed with their franchise titles before, but the brand is still key.

If I only have so much time/money to spend on a game, I'm going to go with a brand that I know will reward my effort. This is why I'll almost certainly buy the next Zelda GC game. I would imagine that this applies to handhelds too.

Very simple. Depending on the interest rate of their debt -- they were probably making more in interest by sitting on their cash, than the interest that was accruing on their debt. Thus it made more sense for them to sit on the cash as long as possible because it was worth more to them in interest than it was as a payment on the debt.

On top of that, why would anyone actually buy a textbook on a language. They aren't cheap but a good reference book like the ones from O'Reilly are going to be way, way more useful than any textbook teaching you a language (and at least cheaper than a textbook).

Besides, in general a good CS course will teach concepts and use the language to illustrate them. My experience has usually been that the notes and handouts from the profs (assuming they're good profs) are better than any book.

Nah -- an Xserve is waaaaay too deep for normal applications -- close to 30".

I looked into adding one to my portable rig and even though I have a box with a bigass mixer in it, it was nowhere near deep enough. Most pro audio equipment is no more than 12" deep, they just don't mix well...

Most home audio stuff isn't even 20" deep. So I guess you could add an Xserve but either you'd need some crazy-deep shelf space or be happy with one unit sticking like 10" out the back of your rack/shelf...

Most of Stanford's curriculum does teach the what's and how's of CS. However they do offer a series of classes (all with course numbers like 193I, 193J, 193E) that teach practical systems. These courses usually can't be used as credit for the major and are only offered only for interested students.

The've had a Win32 based class in this series for years as well as Internet programming, Java, Advanced Java, Lisp, and a few others. This is just a logical next step (bad pun intended).
