  1. The idea is great... on The Pure Software Act of 2006 · · Score: 4, Insightful

Implementation would be far too much trouble. Developers would fight you at every turn. Would my software be spyware if I had it collect general system stats if you choose to register, so that I know the average machine speed of my clients? Would that carry the same label as a program that logged every keystroke and sent that back?

  2. Legalities - FairPlay hacking is illegal on New Tool Cracks Apple's FairPlay DRM · · Score: 4, Informative
If Apple and the RIAA has its way, using a tool like this will be just as illegal as getting the music with Kazaa

It is just as illegal. Actually, more so. Downloading copyrighted music is simple a copyright infringment. (at the moment) This means it falls under civil law.

However, creating a tool like this circumvents a copyright protection scheme. This is a criminal act punishable by up to 5 years in prison or $500,000, under the DMCA of 1998. (section 1201)

As an aside you mention if Apple had it's way...Even at the risk of appearing as an Apple apologist...Apple didn't want DRM at all. They struck a deal with the RIAA. Essentially the RIAA said, NO DRM, NO MUSIC. Apple said, okay...we'll put in a little DRM. I wish I could find the quote from Steve Jobs but he essentially said, "DRM is stupid, users want control of their files and rightly so, DRM will kill the market."

The parent post isn't saying building streets soley for people to walk/ride bikes...he's saying building them so car's aren't the only option.

This is both practical and beneficial. I live in a relatively small city of 16,000. I can ride my bike nearly anywhere in the city without fear of getting hit by a car. Sidewalks are everywhere and roads have wide enough shoulders. Traffic isn't much of a problem because alot of people around here walk when they want to go someplace.

If I want to go get a hair cut I can walk a few blocks or ride my bike. To grab groceries it's just another few feet. I save money on gas and *gasp* get to interact with my neighbors.

I can't imagine living in typical suburbia...it seems so counterproductive and dehumanizing. I laugh when I hear friends pack up their bikes and drive 20 miles just so they can unpack their bikes and ride them.

Having said that. I push iTunes very hard when I work, recommending it to people looking at the Napster displays.

As for Target vs Walmart. Target gives a bit over a million dollars a week to charity and overall is a decent place to work. Just because I used to make $30/hr and now make $7 doesn't sour me too much...you can't expect to make too much working in retail.

I think you meant to ask, "who wants to put everyone in jail?"

Prison is a booming industry. People make massive amounts of money keeping others locked up. Prison's even have lobbyists to help guide harsher laws.

Of course, rich people seldom go to jail. Congressmen and high ranking government officials are rich and abstracted from the common man. They could care less about you. You're just dollar signs to them.

They are actually a decent company. We give over a million dollars to charity every week. Our supervisors make sure our working conditions are good and that our concerned can be voiced.

This can't be said for Walmart. I know people who have worked for them in the past and they are almost prison like institutions. Recently, my city approved the destruction of several residential areas to put in a Walmart. It saddens me to know many people were forced to move from their houses, some of which were kept through several generations, so that citizens could pay a few pennies less for goods.

Now I am offered the choice, boycott Walmart, and hurt them ever so slightly...while hurting my town more through lost tax revenue. Or...I can support Walmart, filling their coffers so they can go on with their destructive behavior...and keep my town afloat.

Also, you probably haven't played many online games if you say that human players have more than enough intelligence...I'm very good at FPS games and finding challenging opponents isn't always easy. Finding people willing to take orders is even harder.

My gifted class was much more than just an advanced English class. And yes, I did miss out on quite a bit because of the budget cuts. The world has social strata and that is a fact. I see no need to be coupled with children who don't want to learn.

Furthermore, while public school provides nothing intrinsically necessary to succeed in life, it sure does help. Try getting any decent job without a high school diploma. It's not that easy. There are major stigmata involved. Sure, you could start your own business, but that takes money. I was not born of rich parents.
