Lastly programmers themselves have a nasty habit of targeting the old systems first which is what breaks. even with windows 7 using win32 installers should be a big no no. yet it is a common thing. (apple avoids that issue by not needing installers, instead they drag the app(folder) to the program folder and run it. Apple does use a package manager for installing things like drivers though.

Also if in 5 years when my costs are zero and yours are still $100 or maybe $125 ( always estimate in a 5% annual price increase on all goods and services without a contract. I can upgrade the storage using the $200+ saved from the last two years to buy newer hard drives that store a significant amount more. My annual costs are still zero but yours keep going up.
Remember to show annual growth an online company needs new users and or raise prices. So always plan for price increases

I deal with manufacturers who do this all the time. it is laughable. The list price of a 100 amp electrical panel is something like $800 but no one actually pays more than $60-80 for one. Why bother with such a complicated scheme when you can simplify it for everyone?
