Also, we can burn less coal and gasoline, and process less uranium, if more of the power production systems move to renewable sources (solar, wind, hydro-electric)

I just saw someone on TV same the same thing and I wanted to mention that the best solution would to keep the nuclear power, but using a better process than is currently in use. Here is why we won't be able to switch entirely to those types you mentioned:

    • Hydro: well first off you need a large moving water source. In order to build a dam, you will be changing the ecosystem that is currently in place. You may need to divert the river, possibly greatly changing the ecosystem it supports currently. You will also be creating a large reservoir right in front of the dam.
    • Wind: Loud, ugly, possibly changing the climate and environment around them. Same problem as nuclear - no one wants them in sight
    • Solar: I like it. However, currently power output isn't enough. That might change in the future, but of course you will still need the sun to power these. Sorry, Seattle.

The future I would like to see still includes nuclear power; just with more modern processing and recycling. My wish is people who claim to be environmentalists, would simply do some research and then perhaps they wouldn't be so afraid of the technology.

I know Bart is going to be working on redoing all the eaccelerator code so he can change it to the PHP license as well but that will take considerable time. I also wonder whether it would still be enough. Ive seen benchmarks that put eAccelerator in front of Zends own product, which Zend must not be too happy about. But its good to see at least some caching be put out there even if its only memory-caching. Then maybe many ISPs will go ahead and turn it on instead of having no caching at all.

The reactors can be built mostly underground (making terrorism harder) and the recycling facilities can be onsite. So in reality all the reactor needs is the initial shipment and a shipment every some x years. If it all works out, it sounds like a great long term plan. Of course if fusion power proves successful, it would definitely be a better course, however I think the best idea would be to plan as though fusion wont work so that we do have a plan for the future

To further your point here utilities are much different than other forms of business. Some kind of public infrastructure needs to be built and maintained. This is the whole reason why these companies are so large in the first place and is their best defense against allowing competitors in the marketplace. When you deregulate a utility, the companies will consolidate (becuase it is vastly cheaper to service a larger area - ie the equipment and manpower can be shared). Fast food restaurants need no public infrastructure - you can place one anywhere. This is why I believe that normal businesses and those that operate a utility should be treated differently.

Are you kidding? This will make things much worse. Large companies will control all the lines and force smaller ones out of business. Large ISPs control the backbone and would have to rent it out to smaller ones. Having many companies compete is exactly what the bigs guys DONT want to see. They will purchase the smaller companies or refuse to lease the lines to them. This is why deregulation is BAD is many cases. I think it will create the opposite of what you wanted and actually drive prices up. What we need is stricter rules if companies are trying to pull this crap.
