I haven't rebooted any of my linux boxes for a while now. apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade are hassle-free, flawless and don't require a reboot unless I update the kernel.
See - unlike MS (l)users, I don't have to enjoy or hate the upgrade process, because its seamless and does not detract me from other computer use. I have had times when I would play Counter-Strike under Wine while running apt-get dist-upgrade;-).
Linux and (F)OSS aren't for "hobbyists" - unless IBM, Sun and Novell are "hobbyists."

The 3Com Saga

Three years ago I got a 3COM ethernet hub, naturally thinking "Huh 3COM is a good company, quality galore."
One year later - the thing crapped out on me, I was getting "collisions" and ghost connections... Upon opening it up - the culprit was two electrolytic capacitors, which were rated for an obviously lower temperature than the one exuded by the device. (The thing was damn hot, and I kept it horizontal, which didn't help the air flow.)
Naturally... I unsoldered the two pieces of shit... went through my junk pile... and soldered two nice caps I pulled out of a dead CRT a month before. Works like a charm.
The only thing I don't get is - Why the fuck do I have to be 3COM QA again? Whats this? The DIY 3COM ethernet 10/100 hub class?
The Soviets were building an oil pipeline, and because they didn't have the technology for the large auto-monitoring pressure-regulating pipes, they bought them from Western Germany and France. The software to run the chips in these pipes was US software. This oil pipleline would have been *very* beneficial to central Europe, so the Soviets assumed the US would play along as it would help its allies (France, W. Germany).
They guessed wrong. If I remember correctly, some 250 people died in this horrible explosion that was on the scale of a nuclear blast. This is nothing to gloat about.
Its all about "Me! Me! Me!" isn't it?
P.S. The Brits had NO scruples about selling CDC machines, IBM RS/6000 and VAXen to the Soviets.
Anyone who can't configure CUPS shouldn't be talking about ignorance...
Its point and click, and unlike Windows, it actually works. Lprng is a tad trickier...

The reason why you don't see any Mini-ITX mobos around the Athlon, is power consumption. I recently built a mini-ATX computer around a T-Bird (1gHz, should have picked something less of an oven), and the mini-ATX power supply crapped out on me, making me buy a REAL ATX powersupply. Gah, still can;t find a 300 WAtt mini-ATX supply.
Btw, you're wrong - there ARE P4-based mini-ITX mobos.

Corona discharge isn't "Esoteric" and there is nothing special (and rare) about - just something that happens on sharp/pointed/non-smooth metal surfaces that conduct HV.
Pretty stuff to see as you fire up your Dirod (http://cavemanchemistry.com/dirod.html) in the middle of the night, although not welcome since it greately reduces the machine's performance.
No Jon, he is like Woz' best friend, like totally. Do ignore the fact that he is dressed like he is touring the North Pole, and that he totally doesn't corresepond to the Depth-Of-Field of the rest of the image, oh, and that he didn't age at all in 25 years.
Anyways - its kind of interesting how NO ONE is commenting. Could this be cause no one can relate to this in any way? Could this be cause most of slashdot's population wasn't born in the 60s?
Yup... Being "George Washington never tells a lie" will get you instant fame, likely one that you won't like, unless you're like me and you don't give a rats ass about everyone's opinion.
Of course, somewhere along that path you will discover that sometimes you don't want everyone to consider you an unapproachable asshole.
MemTest86 - a VERY GOOD memory tester. Does not need an OS to work. Boots with LILO (and GRUB). Nice and graphical (ncursy-like). Can work without a graphics card, using the serial port as an interface to a terminal.

A) UT2k3 runs under x86/x86-64 Linux. B) UT2k3 does not run under PPC/PPC64 Linux. Thus, I'll stick with my Athlon, thank you.
Install a window pager?
Boy... try not uninstalling it in the first place, most "non-esoteric" WMs have pagers.
Unless, you're in a win32 world.
Uhh, no its not. LOL>
