  1. Quite the news story on Aerial Photographs of the 1906 Earthquake · · Score: 1

Pics of the SF earthquake - this must have been quite the news flash -98 YEARS AGO. Sort of the ultimate repeat post. If there was a slashdot back then, I'm sure this would have made it as a story.

  2. Tis the season... on Massive Layoffs At AOL · · Score: 1

An entire division of my former company was laid off today. Fortunately(?) there were only five people left to lay off, but since thats the entire floor of a building, I guess that qualifies as "massive". BTW the reason it's my "former" company is because I was laid off a year ago (along with the 20 or so others in my group)

  3. Re:Outsourcing is rough when your company is dumb on Offshoring IT · · Score: 1

Let me get this straight - you went to Bangalore to train your replacement? That's like digging your own grave, not to mention borderline treasonous! If you told them anything, I hope it was false information in order to help secure your job and the jobs of your fellow coworkers back home.

The number I quoted for the US is federal only also. We dont have provincial tax, but we have state tax which is similar. Depending on where you live we may also have municipal or city income tax as well.

  5. Re:Sorry, but that's BS on Live to be 1000 Years Old? · · Score: 1

By "reason" I mean assuming you believe in evolution. Humans developed in a certain way to ensure the survival of the species. (Or were created by God that way, if you prefer). Lifespan is one of those factors that makes sense from a survival standpoint. If no one ever died, you would run out of food. If you died when you were 10 years old, you wouldn't have any kids. That's the "reason" we live as long as we do.

  6. Sorry, but that's BS on Live to be 1000 Years Old? · · Score: 1

People often confuse human lifespan with human life expectancy. Our life expectancy has increased over the millenia to 70 some odd years thanks to medicine, not being eaten by tigers, etc. But, there is still a physical limit of 120 years or so that we can approach, but never reach (or more properly exceed). The body, including the brain, just isn't designed to live that long even under ideal conditions and with constant repair. There's a good reason people live as long as they do and no longer - by then, they will have had plenty of time to have kids (i.e. replacements) and raise them.

  7. Re:Don't forget tax on Canadian iTunes Music Store Opens · · Score: 1

22% rate on $70,000 per year? Sounds pretty good - I could be wrong, but I'm thinking the US Federal rate is 28% for that salary. Plus we have state and city taxes bleeding us dry as well, plus real estate tax, sales tax, tax tax...

OK next question then - living in the USA, how can I get a Canadian credit card? With online payment, I wouldnt ever have to go to Canada to pick up my bills which (perhaps) could just be sent to a PO Box somewhere.

  12. Re:private areas to the blog on Microsoft Launches Blogging Site · · Score: 1

I've used blogs before for class group projects. Granted, there are other pieces of software that would fulfill the same purpose such as on-line bulletin boards, but the blogs proved useful as a way of both sharing information amomgst the group and recording a "diary" of our progress that anyone can easily check.

Nice plan - until you get the property tax bill for the building, which probably includes millions in unpaid back taxes.

  14. Re:Getting my MBA on What Do People in the IT Field Do for Side Jobs? · · Score: 1

Thanks for the serious response to my somewhat tongue in cheek posting. Actually, I am not contemplating a major career change with the MBA at the moment (I am currently a software development "Tech Lead"), just trying to round out my education a little bit with some marketing and finance courses to help me with my current job. I am currently a year into a three year program, and so far it's been a great experience. Eventually I see myself moving into more PM type functions (I do some of that already).

  15. Getting my MBA on What Do People in the IT Field Do for Side Jobs? · · Score: 1

No, seriously. As more and more coding jobs are moved overseas (infrastructure and sysadmin people will still be needed here in the US) I don't see a very rosy future for myself as a software developer, without moving to Bangalore.

  16. iTunes User on Some iPod Fans Dump PCs For Macs · · Score: 1

I don't have an iPOD (listen to all my music at home, work, or in car, no need for one) but I bought a Mac for the first time in a decade after using iTunes on the PC. The software was so superior to anything comparable in the Windows world that I forgot how enjoyable using a Mac was.

  17. Be Wary of contract for hire on Switching to Contracting? · · Score: 1

A friend of mine was in a similar situation 3 years ago. She was hired as a contractor because it was easier, and was told in 6 months they would make her a permanent employee (with all the permanent benefits and perks). Three years later, she's still a contractor at the same company, and every few months they threaten to end the contract. So far, it keeps getting renewed, but only in 3-6 month increments.

  18. George Lucas should take notes... on Raimi Remaking 'Evil Dead'? · · Score: 1

If you don't like your old movie, go ahead and remake it (Evil Dead II was really just a remake of Evil Dead 1) but leave the originals alone for posterity (and the enjoyment of the fans).

  23. Re:Just got a raise - sort of on Employee Stock Options? · · Score: 1

Hmmm OK, what percentage of your income DO you take home? And is it possible that higher taxes are offset by higher salaries? (Probably not in the 90s, but salaries here have dropped dramatically in the past several years). By way of comparison, my take home pay is currently 66% of my gross income. That doesnt include property taxes or sales tax. I get two weeks paid vacation per year, 6 paid holidays (no plant closings between Christmas and New Years, or anything like that), and no overtime. And of course, even with health insurance I still have hefty deductibles, copays, etc. I'm genuinely curious, how does Canada stack up to that?

  24. Re:Just got a raise - sort of on Employee Stock Options? · · Score: 1

Actually, we were told that the rate of increase to the company was entirely passed on to the employees, so the company is paying the same as last year.

  25. Just got a raise - sort of on Employee Stock Options? · · Score: 1

We all just had our annual reviews and got very modest raises - 1%-3%. But, the same week they announced our new health insurance plans and rates for 2005. Our costs per paycheck have DOUBLED (for not nearly as good a plan, I might add) and I quickly calculated that my take home pay will be LESS once the raise takes effect due to increased health insurance rates. To this, all I can say as a USA citizen is...Oh Canada! At this rate I'll be moving there soon.
