Theres a good book out there for all of you interested in the early hacker/cracker movement written by Bruce Sterling. Its called the Hacker Crackdown and is available here in the electronic format. Very well researched and written.Gives you a good insight intothe days of LoD,MoD and others.A lot of the guys on this list feature in the book.
I just noticed that there are a few questions that have kept repeating themselves in this post and previous ones.So i thought i should attempt to answer a few of them being an Indian who works in the outsourcing industry in bombay.
1. Most questions asked here are cultural differences and definitely do NOT belong to LinuxAsia!;)
2. Are those benefitting from these jobs in India consuming American goods?
Yes they are.Like elsewhere Coke and pepsi is part of the staple diet of most indians above the poverty line.(though i prefer beer). We wear a lot of Nike/Reebok/Levis,even though they are all made in China or thailand etc.Theres a Mcdonalds in most major cities.
3. How does it work with the time difference between the US and India?
We work at nights instead of day.My day typically starts at 1am and ends at 11am.That way we are working during americen working hours.
4. Microsoft Vs Linux
Don't you know everyone the world over hates Microsoft? or you're supposed to?!? In terms of other OS'es Linux is much more popular than any other non-MS OS ie Mac OS,BSD,Solaris etc.
5. Why India?
Why not?:-) Jokes apart, the whole outsourcing thing is more an internal issue of America than anything else.If you can convince the big American firms to stop Outsourcing theres nothing India or any other country in the world can do about it.They'd outsource blah-kistan if India got erased from the list. $$ is the key issue.
6. Americans in India.
Yes, its a whole LOT easier for an american to get a job in India than it is for an Indian in USA.If its a small firm they won' even look at your passport as long as you can get the work done.Btw we have no minimum wage system,at least not that i know of.
Geeks here n geeks everywhere are the same, we thrive on beer,Quake,010101's and slashdot.Over n out.
it seems that after port knocking running on the server it pretty much limits what the box can do with most people unable to connect and only users with a cipher key knocking on the door being let in.Its again a case of too much security ( at least thats what it seems to me.)
that would be www.slashdot.co.in. And i don't think slashdot would mind if the hosting and bandwidth woud be cheaper in India.
After all who does'nt want 40% more bandwidth for half the price?;-P
Even though i'm from India and work in a call center theres a correction to a common myth. Its not just IT jobs that are being outsourced to India but a lot of others like telemarketing, backoffice, insurance, data entry.
Regarding the telemarketing issue it creates an escape route for the big firms because it would actually be the indian company that would come under fire in case of a screw up and not the american firm.
Even though this post would work against outsourcing, i thought id just let the tech crow know. And the actual point again comes down to that big firms WANT to outsource cause its more money for them(in terms of cheap labour) and legal protection.
I work for an Indian call center which does all sorts of processing and telemarketing for clients like Chase,Citi..ec.
I work as a systems admin at night(USA time), studying for my GMAT in the day along with catching a little sleep. The job gets me about $7000 annually.Yes I am going to study in the USA probably steal another job there, temp or not if I can get it.Does that make me bad?Does that make the whole outsourcing industry bad?Its not the minimum wage factor that I'd like to argue.
Everyday we get about 5 tasks that were done wrong by some desk jockey in the USA and have to be streamlined and corrected here.(not talking about the actually processing, just simple reports n stuff)
Ok maybe not everything is that bad but what is a guy like me supposed to do? I earn more than most of my friends..live an ok lifestyle and struggle to save up for future education. This is the typical scenario you find in a IT outsourcing company in India.
Should I just quit and work as something else?
Why would Citi stop Outsourcing when they earn more by outsourcing and get better value for money? Isnt it right that we lobby for Outsourcing in USA?
Buddy, its exactly 5:21am here in India.I am in office, its 6:57 EST.We work till 12am EST.With we I mean around a few hundred call centers in and BPO's all over india who are awake with me.I guess this is US time?:-)
Its high time they saw the bigger picture(haw haw) and nominated something that really deserves an Oscar. And not some weeping tom movie that people will only see after its won an oscar.WTG Oscar team and now do us proud by making ROTK win!
I agree. Its just a ploy to sell more pc's at a cheaper rate and vendors can install their own pirated copies. Its fine by me as long as the actual hardware is cheaper.
I think the flexibility that Linux provides to the manufacturers is the key factor in its being the OS of choice.
Any OS that the hardware makers can use to their advantage to make the product more robust n fast will definitely be ahead in the race.Seriously doubt an Microsoft OS will give that kind of flexibility or 'openness'.
I always love the showdown betweel IT and operations!
Its the only chance you'll get to intimidate them fully( forget it if your thinking about any good coming out of this).
They usually just shake their heads n promise to buy you new CD's.. is that all IT is worth? NEW CD's??:-)
guess it was too much money being spent without any inflow, so it had to stop. But didnt expect it to stop so soon.
Always thought that RH was someone who would provide support as long as possible.
Its nice to have someone lead the way, digital is afterall where its at.Though id be really disappointed if polaroid went the same way.
I love those polaroid Instant film cameras and those guys in local pubs clicking pics of you drunk n givin them for a lil money.truly would be sad to go to him with your own memory flash card or something.
wtf? wtf? dun we say that way too many times after we shut the window n a million other open n you go "wtf? did'nt i just shut that crap?".
and u thought u were quick enough to hide porn when ur mom entered the room.
Has anyone ever looked at the angle that a good amount of bandwidth gets wasted with Popup ads.Especially the new heavy duty ones which hang ur IE.I just went to a tripod site yesterday(my fault) and it opened so many popups i could'nt find the original window.
damn i did'nt know that.that was one link i loved sending everyone or their internet experience would be incomplete. :-(
anyone know of a McLaren branded laptop or PDA? Id uy it right now.The loser Red is not for moi.

Don't you love it when you click on an interesting link and it asks you to fill up a lovely flowery HUGE form? :p
Pardon my ignorance..but do FreeBSD n Open BSD use the same kernel? If they do does that mean that this bug would affect FreeBSD as well?
