No one can compete with EA, because they spend all day sodomizing their employees with hat racks, and refuse to compensate them with anything more than gift certificates for mashed potatos from El Pollo Loco.
Well, even though you are trolling you have a valid point.
I was hoping WoW would fix the treadmill problem somewhat, and it certainly does try to. There is more incentive to do quests for EXP instead of mindlessly camping monsters. The quests are more varied as are the rewards. However in the end it still comes down to the illusion that you are "investing" your time instead of just passing it.
I quit playing FFXI and got back into Enemy Territory and StarCraft for just that reason. You can jump in, have a good time for 20 minutes, and quit. True that time would probably be best spent doing something else, but at least you aren't harboring dellusions that you are getting something for your time. I came to that conclusion after spending hours trying to level up my "cooking" ability in FFXI. The thought occurred to me, "wow too bad I can't cook for shit in real life", and I never played again after that day..
That is kind of what people said about StarCraft when it was first released. Nothing ground breaking at the time, just an RTS with less than impressive graphics.
It took a while before the real depth of the gameplay was uncovered.
I also wonder if there might be a constitutional challenge here - unlike military/police/fire/hospital workers, it is pretty hard to argue that video game programmers are "essential", and must be kept working long hours at all costs.
You should try joining #FFXI on efnet when one of the game's servers is down..
Or if you don't have the time to do all the research, word has it that it is pretty safe to trust the guides at anandtech.
I think their Overclocked System Guide is especially handy if you want to get the most bang for your money. Although it hasn't been updated in over a month, which is rare.
It was called "Force Commander" I believe, and was released in 1998.
If you recall, RTS was the buzzword of gaming that year. It seemed everyone was releasing RTS, kind of like the FPS "fad" previously. Some of the worst games of all time were released with the idea that since they were RTS they would sell well, and some of them did.
I specifically remember thinking Force Commander wasn't going to fall into this horrible crevice, however it did.
I wish they'd just license the starcraft game engine, polish it a little, and sell it with Star Wars units. I'd buy that.

For 15 dollars, a giant troll hand better come out of my DVD rom drive and jack me off.
That, in a strikingly fitting analogy, would be like getting all the gifts you gave your first girlfriend back to give to your last.

Who are *you* to say that John Romero didn't want to kick my ass?
