What kind of server performance can you get with that? My ISP (http://www.aa.nu - amazing company...don't all run at once...) offers a racked EPIA 10000 with 250Gb storage and 512MB Ram on a 1Gb switch for ukp50 per month with service terms of a monthly 95th percentile of 1Mb/s per 1U. (I said DON'T all run at once...) You have to buy the hardware from them for ukp500 + VAT but that is pretty much the going rate anyway...
I'm tempted as hell but i need to know if it will be able to cope with my Postfix/Amavisd-new/ClamAV/DSPAM without any problems... - I'm running on a 2 proc Powermac G4 with X Server at the moment, but on a DSL line, and i want more bandwidth...this seems a neat way to go and the G4 can become a workgroup server.
So, any idea how much these things can cope with? I only host a few fairly anonymous websites and have a few thousand messages a week running through it so i'm assuming it will run fine, but I really have no idea how efficient these things are...for example when i turn myself into a 5000 office multinational will i just have to add some more RAM or will i be peeling the melted remains of the CPU off the shiny XServe racked below....?
This guy is in London and assmuning he doesn't work in Brixton at night he should be fine!
I carry a Powerbook, iPod and P900 pretty much everywhere I go in London on the tube etc and i would recommend the following:
1) Hide the earbuds (tick) 2) Get a sleeve for your laptop and place it in an anonymous backpack - Mandarina Duck, DaKine and Boblbee (all available from Selfridges i think) all make great ones which will support a 15" laptop with plenty of padding and with room for power cords etc. 3) Avoid obvious wallet bulges - keep your Oyster card in a loose pocket so you don't get out your wallet every time you get in or out of public transport. 4) Walk with your head held high and walk with purpose. People with confidence automatically appear taller, bigger and far less of a target than someone shuffling around staring at their moccasins....
and finally....
5) For god's sake don't wear a bluetooth headset everywhere you go...people like that deserve everything they get.
in fact...why not go the whole hog... set up a community service where people all over the country put an cheap old pc in their closet on a phone line and then advertise the service to a directory. you place a call to their area and the call is routed and terminated through their pc. if they are busy, system finds another one! no call costs as it's all local, the only charges being line rental on the line - which might well be small price to pay for free calls all over the us....

Why not write a little redirect php script that is hosted somehwhere with mad uptime - that script would ping both hosts and direct the user to the one which responds quickest. - of course if the php script machine went down you'd be toast but....
no idea if this works in large volumes, but we use something similar for client side redirects...
this should not be a legal issue. there is no fraud, there is no criminal activity. the gambler in this instance is using information available to everyone is a clever way. The casino may not like him, but he can't be prosecuted because he's not broken any laws.
Orange (a mobile operator in the UK on a standard 2.5G SGM network) provide a WAP function called 'Where's my nearest?' This allows you to find your nearest ATM, pub, restaurant, cinema and even provides a little map showing you where it is. It can show you where you are, and provide driving directions of where you want to get to. The accuracy is to within a block or so for the location finder - in most areas it triangulates you to a postcode accuracy of N1 1 (where there are 2 further letter which more or less designate a street and position on that street)
The airport routers are excellent if you have at least one mac to configure them - you can configure multiple basestations at a time so sorting them out is easy (although I have found the range isn't excellent on them) They also support RADIUS and WPA security levels so they they are more secure.
However, having just bought a Linksys WRT54G and upgraded it using the help of the http://www.broadbandreports.com/shownews/38267 report slashdotted yesterday, I now have a router that supports WDS, RADIUS, and can up the power output up to 88mW from 28mW using a software switch. It also supports bandwidth management for all you bittorrent monkeys out there. The DHCP server seems a little dodgy, but you would probably put a dedicated server in anyway for $7k. So, my point is get a few WRT54Gs, upgrade them as per the link using the Sveasoft firmware upgrade, whack in a nice dedicated server somewhere on a hard connection and you're good to go!
I've been using a Boblbee bag for the past few years and it is excellent. The People's Delight bage fits a 15" screen perfectly and I've used it with my Powerbook Pismo and Alu 15". It is orthopaedic and moulds to your back. The best thing about it though is that it doesn't look like a laptop bag. This means you can carry it on the tube and people have no idea what's inside it. The hard back is available is many colours and i've only broken it once - i was snowboarding and landed on it after i cought an edge on some ice. I phoned them up and they sent me a new shell for free! -
no i can beat you. was in the post office buying stamps last week and a woman was with her daughter. she wanted four 28p stamps and couldn't work out how much to tell her daughter to put in the machine. she had written down 28+28+28+28 on a piece of paper and was adding it up manually...8+8, carry 1, um....
seriously...it made me realise i take some things for granted....
As a matter of interest, how would one actually go about writing a virus for OSX? It can't hijack any processes without asking for authentication, unless initialised by root, and it can't delete things either for the same reason. So, without actually becoming root, am I correct in thinking that creating a malicious virus for a UNIX based OS, the only way is to do it would be to gain access to a sudoer account, or root? I would imagine that a worm might be different matter, but still to spawn new processes, the permissions have to be got from somewhere - and surely a kill command would just end it anyway (assuming it could be found...)
This wasn't specifically intended as a reply to your post, but you seem to have a clue about your OS choices hence the question...
I wonder what the bandwidth charges are going to be for their little site after their quicktime movie is slashdotted... 194,000 loads so far and counting...that's got to be more than a battery....
I think maybe i didn't make my point clear. What i meant was that no matter how the music is played, if you can change the order of the tracks (as heard) then you change the terms of the licensing. If you broadcast things over the radio, then you can't do that as you have a one way commuincations channel. If you do it in such a way as to allow the end user to change that, then then you need are effectively changing the terms of the license.
Maybe i shouldn't have used the word digital in the title, but i assumed that as the medium is two way, then the music will have been encoded digitally at some point in the process and that is what allows the rewind and fast forward functions to work. I'm assuming it doesn't change pitch when they press fast forward and there isn't an open relay for every conceivable room and channel in the university...
Would they not have a license problem as they can control the program by rewind and fast forward. In an analogue medium the flow is linear - this way, people can control the order of the music which probably means their analogue license won't cover it...
(In the uk at least, if you wish to broadcast music, there are controls on how many tracks from one album / label etc you can broadcast in a set period of time. )
the shark thing is the same as golf balls. In a certain Reynolds number regime (function of viscosity and velocity) the turbulent parasitic drag is less than that of the laminar parasitic drag. Therefore in certain cases it pays to make the flow around the skin of the object rough as this will trip the flow into a turbulent regime. A turbulent regime has the added advantage of making the flow cling closer to the geometry of the object and thus additionally reducing the pressure drag on the object (the main component of the drag). For the full gory details, see pages 9 and 17 of the following: http://rclsgi.eng.ohio-state.edu/~sami my/courses/M E%20504%20Lecture%20Notes%20-%20Lecture%2011.pdf As a side note, the guys doing the Tour de France are some of the most amazing atheletes in the world and no amount of talking up their technology can take away from this fact. The distances they cover over and over again day after day is a feat of human endurance and has very little to do with materials or engineering.

great idea if it's legal though.
hence the battery comment.
if you compress it, you need to decompress it at some point, ergo additional circuitry -> additional power required.
Ain't gonna happen any time soon i'm afraid:
Bluetooth Bandwidth (peak): 1Mb/sec
16bit 44khz Stereo audio : 1.4Mb/sec
so unless you are using one chip per channel and have a large battery pack, the most useful application for this tech is dead.
That said, I love bluetooth for what it does do.
Remove cables between my phone, laptop, ipaq and soon printer. Simple, and 100% effective

CD quality sound requires too much bandwidth (>768k/sec) and to have a decompressor in the headset would drain the battery and make it too big -
ergo - won't happen any time soon
(unless you don't mind mono sound)
