    the real problem is that windows tries to be everything to everybody (its an oven cleaner, its a desert topping!), so its got tons of krap that home users dont need (and creates problems for them) and its got tons of krap that corporate users dont need (and creates problems for them).

    the sad thing is that major linux distros seem to be headed down the same path

    So Iran and Syria are using Iraq and its indigenous resistance as a proxy war to keep the US tied down in Iraq and unable to move against them. It is well thought out and we are in serious trouble there as a result.

    I had a laptop once that would quit working as soon as it got hot. I took it back to the store and they wouldn't warranty it because I had installed Linux on it. It wouldn't stay running long enough to reload Windows from the factory restore disk. After a couple of trys I booted the factory restore disk and stuck the laptop in the freezer. Worked fine and I got my money back

    good comment, except the part about the shuttle not landing at edwards again. while KSC will continue to be the prime landing site for all missions (if there ever are any), edwards is still the 1st backup site and has far more reliable weather than KSC, as well as just being a lot bigger.

    this is just plain wrong. The Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs used only liquid fuel. The shuttle is the first and only "man-rated" solid booster in the US space program, and it required waiving many level 1 safety requirements, like having to be able to shut it off.

    VMS uses a 64 bit date/time format that rolls over sometime slightly after the Sun runs out of hydrogen, so you're right, Y2K was pretty much a non-event to VMS users, even less than it was to Unix users. Unix users better start worrying about that Y2038 problem pretty soon...

    Alpha is on life support too. EOL is in 2012, I think. See HPs web site for the whole story.

    A previous poster mention emulation on emulation. I've seen it done, and heard of others doing it.

    When the PDP-11s were EOLed, we ran RT-11 apps using the RT-11 emulator under the RSX-11m emulator on VAX/VMS.

    I've heard of people running IBM 650 apps on an emulator that ran on a 1401 emulator which they ran on OS/360.

    The really pathetic thing is that where I work everyone already has securids for login to the remote access vpn, but they still use cleartext passwords on the unix boxes

    wal-mart got to be #1 by doing things better, faster, and cheaper than their competition.

    Wal-mart's original website was a horrible mess of asp on a all MS platform. They replaced it with a linux front end after a very short time. It was big news at the time but is probably pre-history for the average /.er

    The point that the vast majority of the flamers on both sides seem to have missed is that a respected business publication thinks linux has a chance.

    Most of us that were around when Linus made his quip about world domination never in our wildest dreams expected it would really happen, and here is an article saying it might. And articles like this have actually become common!

    the scan tool for current BMWs is ONLY available from BMW and it costs upward of $10,000. They only made it available to independent repair shops under pressure from the government

    Manufacturers dont want you to be able to fix your own car. They want to lock you into taking it to the dealer for ALL maintainence and repairs. How do they do that? Not by welding the hood on, because as one early poster pointed out, thats easy to fix with a grinder or plasma cutter. They do it with SOFTWARE. Closed source software where even the specifications of the external interfaces are kept secret. All of the major subsystems and many of the minor ones on a modern vehicle are microprocessor controlled. Without documented interfaces to these subsystems independent repair shops will cease to exist. What do you suppose the dealers hourly labor rate will be once there's no independent repair shops?

    as a previous poster reminded me there is no need for AvGas at either MCM or Scott Base. Small plane ops are conducted with the DeHavilland Twin Otter aircraft which is turboprop powered and uses JP, not AvGas.
