Other than the games that I play on a regular basis, I'm starting to keep some of my games in the garage now. On one wall hangs my gardening tools and on the other I've attached steel shelfing to the wall. I live in a moderately humid climate so to prevent the games from going mouldy and keep bugs out at the same time I keep the games in air lock bags which in turn at placed inside covered storage boxes.

I think he means the cost to manufacture the xbox2 not the store price. The RRP won't differ that much from the ps3 in order to stay competitive and up profits but ms will skim on the xbox2 where ever possible to save a buck, unlike the xbox which is the main cause for ms's entertainment division being in the red.

  4. Re:So what? on MS May Be Forced To Sell Stripped-Down OS In EU · · Score: 1

I think it would actually. When the OS doesn't come bundled with something that the end-user wants then he/she will have to make a conscious decision on which program they want to get the job done. Some will just go to Microsoft's website and get IE or whatever. If so then oh well, it was the user's action that put IE on their computer and nothing can be said about that. Others will look at it more objectively and compare the programs that are available, their pros and cons, security issues etc. This is what will give Firebird and the others a greater chance at getting on peoples computers. Right now most people use IE, WMP, and Outlook because it came preinstalled with their OS. How fair is that on Firebird and the others? Its not and this is what the EU is trying to change.

btw I was wrong about the MS unbundling IE and Outlook from Windows ,it's just WMP, but it would be good if they added IE and Outlook in as well for the reasons I stated above. :)

WMP = Mplayer (w32 binary is available) for movies, winamp for audio
    ms messenger = gaim
    outlook express = thunderbird

wow. reading that really saddened me. I still buy psx games from time to time and if I find one that not complete or the manual/disc is in shoddy condition (the case I can change if it's broken) I wont pick it up, even if its some rare game that I really really want.

That store might not have enough space for the cases because the games arent selling because they aren't complete.... The major dept stores in the city I live in keep their music cds separate from the cases to deter theft. They cds are kept in plastic sleeves behind the counter and one thing I've found about plastic sleeves is they (still) scratch the disc, and leave specks of dust behind. Another annoying thing I've found is the number of clerks who dont know how to handle the cds properly. They put their fingers all over the reading surface when they are placing it back in the case. grrr. I can't really avoid fingerprints when buying used psx games but I still would like to have them complete...

I think the reason they don't have the necessary licences is due to them not qualifying for them rather than the cost of obtaining them.

Found this little tidbit on the web
    pdf
about another license that is needed to build dvd players. It says:

In order to manufacture any sort of DVD related item, whether it be DVD discs (i.e. the movies) or the players (DVD Players or DVD-ROM's), the manufacturer must obtain a license from the DVD Copy Control Association (DVD CCA). The DVD CCA is a non-profit organisation responsible for licensing CSS to such manufacturers. It is not possible to use the DVD logo, or even the word DVD without this licence.

When the manufacturer make players that can skip/ fast forward anywhere, advertise prominently how to change the region code etc, they can have their license revoked. In reality this only really prevents them from using the logo and the word dvd. Like your article mentions it doesnt stop grey importing of these products.

The CSS license is more expensive too, at $15,000 a year.

Another thing, this one concerns Riaa, if they intend to cash in on song revenues in games they better up their standard or they will be facing the same problems they have with selling cds. The original matrix sndtrk was awesome, the second was not.
