... still thinking that Usenet is primarily a text based medium.
But that's seems to be too much 1990s thinking these days, unfortunately. Discussion mainly happens in web forums. Yet, if you search for a particular piece of information, Google Groups search can be so much than having to trudge through gazillions of EBay "search results" when using web search.
I think, it's very unfortunate, that Usenet is primarily seen as a distribution platform for (illegal) binary content.
... once that new game development studio from East-Mongolia will release a new, shiny 3d shooter along with their very own controlware client, will you happily embrace that, too?
Oh, and being an old Ultima fan, I still like playing Ultima 7 these days, which is possible thanks to the Exult project. Hard to imagine this will be possible in the case of HL2 10 years from now...
I recently upgraded my hardware to a MSI RS480 M2 with ATI's RS480 chipset (with Athlon 64 Winchester CPU), and a SATA harddrive.
I already downloaded a preview version of the new Ubuntu distro in March, but it, like others I've tried, doesn't seem to recognize the SATA hdd.
Googling for the problem, I have read somewhere, that this hw configuration should be supported from Linux kernel version 2.6.11 on. Being a Linux newbie, are there any distributions I could try to get working with my SATA drive at this point?
Er, do you happen to know about the open source effort (formerly called OpenBeOS, now called Haiku) to recreate BeOS?
I think it's quite likely that there'll be at least an alpha version of the OS out this year.
No additional security features in the first release, though, the goal was to use R5 as a fixed reference point to avoid arguments about the design of the OS until it was fully functional.
A kick-ass feature I'd like to see in Mozilla and Firefox would be to automatically break up long words/numers/urls at the edge of the screen.
Since I have a TFT with 1280x1024 resolution, I often increase font sizes when browsing the web to reduce eye strain, but that often causes horizontal scroll bars to appear when long words or urls are in the text, making it much less convenient to read, e.g. in those ubiquitous phpBB based forums.
So does the retail version also have the MS-like product activation "feature"?
Well, Microsoft has forced that down my throat once with XP, but since I'm interested but not an avid ego shooter fan, this could definitely be a reason for deciding against purchasing it, regardless of how much praise the game gets...

Maybe those wrestlers can try to become accepted as an endangered animal species?
The new bad guy has been described as a 'BAD motha.' He is the leader of the droid armies and is the ultimate Jedi-killing machine.
Ooh, I know! He'll have a laser gun that shoots three rays instead of one, arranged in a triangular fashion! He's the first in the Star Wars Galaxy who will have thought about this!
... Microsoft has recently added BMW boss Helmut Panke to its board of directors [1] - a move to get more insight into the German political system?
And a German Member of Parliament, Ekin Deligoz, recently said (on TV) that she thought it was frightening "if you think about how much money Microsoft invests into their parliament work". [2]
Both links in German language only, unfortunately:

In addition to this, Hopper is supposed to start horizontally (on a 4 km long carriage, or how you'd call that) and not like the Space Shuttle. It seems it would kinda need wings then, wouldn't it?
What would you rather read without message filter - Usenet or Slashdot? For me, it'd be definitely the former.
Why do people always seem to bash Usenet? I've read so much trash on web boards that I can't believe that people think it's any worse when reading newsgroups.
But maybe I'm just reading the "wrong" newsgroups (i.e. those with a high signal/noise ratio).
You could say, Biodiesel hasn't exactly taken off, but here in Germany it *is* available. My relatives own a gas station that offers colza (? I don't know if this is the correct English name for the plant, at least a dictionary turned it up) Biodiesel and quite a few companies (for their trucks) and private customers in the region use it.
Admittedly, not many fuel stations offer it - but as far as I can remember there have been no shortages in the past years - for example from Campa Biodiesel

Well it'll be better at keeping the evildoer in front of the screen in check, of course!

Great idea for a new movie:
"Ghostbusters 3: The day all patents on evil expired"

According to insiders, John Carmack has coded a special code path for office PCs. You just have to double-click "doom3.ppt" instead of "doom3.exe"

Microsoft has the rights on evilly dominating the world. SCO only has the rights on depicting evil world domination. Hope that makes it clearer.
