    I do this all the time. My most "profitable" is probably getting my taxes done for a fraction of the cost while I assist with their computer issues.

    Free lunches are the most common.

    Personal, um, favors, um, have been offered to me, but declined.

    It always bugged me that Evolution was not available for Windows. I'd be more than happy to ditch Outlook, but a good alternative does not exist. The Mozilla family is not a good alternative.

    I hope that this means we'll see Evolution and others ported to Windows in the near future.

    I seem to recall a story from the western U.S. where the city instituted rigid conservation controls. The result was that they were successful.

    Well, sort of. The subsequent drop in water usage also resulted in a drop in water revenue and sewer revenue (water usage was metered). The city ended up losing so much money due to not keeping up with fixed costs, that they tossed the measures out the window. They needed the money more than the conservation.

    Desalination on a large scale is absolutely necessary for humanity's survival over the next 100 years.

    Come on. Who reads that way. We read by browsing, skimming, skipping. We do our own keyword search in our heads and skip the all-to-common fluff and bad writing that's crammed into Web pages.

    For a 6 year-old, this might work. But they are missing some key points on how Web pages are consumed in the real world.

    The trees that have been in cold water the longest make some of the best wood in the world. Apparently, these was/is an effort to get some sunken wood from the bottom of Lake Superior that went down with logging ships long ago.

    Great idea. Hope it's not one of the ugly big corporations that Michael hates so much that is doing it. And for god's sake, let's hope nobody actually makes an EVIL profit off of it. Right, Michael?

    To what extent is the price difference attributable to the VAT as opposed to the low dollar?

    Seems that tech always costs more in Europe due to VAT issues.

    Here in the states, you are supposed to pay the tax for items you buy from other states (pay your state tax, even though the purchase was made out of state. While most people don't actually do this, I was curious as to the laws involved when you purchase internationally. If you buy from the US, do you owe the UK VAT tax if you reside there and use it there?

    So what. Anyone can get a normal return on their money in bonds and cash instruments. The profit that you attribute to interest is meaningless and provides zero incentive for a person to buy stock in the company.

    A company must make MORE than a normal return to provide incentive to buy its stock.

    Isn't Apple/Jobs smart enough to find better ways to invest their money than letting it sit in a pile of cash? This is the crux of Apple's problem. Lack of innovation/creativity, believe it or not. They don't have the vision to create/innovate even when given an almost unlimited amount of cash.

    I don't see any empirical results. Have any experiments that he's done been reproduced? What are his methodologies.

    Sounds like junk-science to me. The guy has a hypothesis. That's about it.
