Advertisements and price tag do a LOT more than the shelves of dvd-size plastic boxes with the console's logo on them, it seems.
That and an incredibly novel method of interacting with the games...

How did they measure this number? Is this number of accounts created or number of current active accounts? I'm guessing its the former, where someone like myself (who hasn't played in months) would be included.

  9. Which Version Will They Show on Star Wars, the Lost Interviews · · Score: 2, Interesting

As the movie celebrates its 30th anniversary, George Lucas will be joined by many of his collaborators at a special screening at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences' Goldwyn Theater on Monday.

I wonder which version will be screened, the original or "enhanced" version?

  10. Previous Games on A Criticism of Race Portrayal in Games · · Score: 4, Informative
In the first GTA3 you were an unnamed white hoodlum in NY. In the second, you were an italian mobster in Miami. In the third, you're a black gangbanger in LA. The series plays on stereotypes and nothing is sacred. In all of them, all races were equally depicted as villains. It really isn't fair to decry their depiction of African Americans unless you include their depiction of homosexuals, hippies, latinos, bikers, cops, jews, lawyers, etc...

The GTA games have always had a heavily satirical slant to them, and anyone who has actually played the games would be able to tell you that.

Innovative. Not like when they released Warcraft 2 then 3 then a MMO based on Warcraft.

That's like saying there was no innovation from Super Mario Bros. to Super Mario World to Super Mario 64. Have you even played the Warcraft games? From 2 to 3 there was a major leap in the mechanics of the RTS. From 3 to WoW was a complete change of genre!

  15. None of them on GDC Floor To Double in Size for 2007 · · Score: 1

I would think none of them would try to claim E3's crown. My understanding was that game companies were seeing increasing costs and diminishing returns in putting on such shows, which is why most of them decided to back out of E3 2007, leading to it's demise. So why would another show be allowed to be just as wasteful and distracting?

  16. Prior Art on Irish Company Claims Free Energy · · Score: 1

Too bad they won't be able to get the patent due to prior art. The Hanso Foundation has doing similar work in their Dharma Initiative Project on their island in the south Pacific. Oh well, Namaste.

  17. "Innovation" on CliffyB Talks Gears, Nintendo, Sony · · Score: 1
" Based on what you know, and what Epic knows as a middleware developer, can you think of anything in particular, specifically, that you would do differently if you were making Gears of War on the PlayStation 3?

I like the whole tilt controller. I think we could do some cool stuff there. Possibly do some integration with the PSP. And, to be honest, that's all I can think of right now. I haven't put a lot of thought into it. I've been so nose-deep in Gears on the 360. "

Nintendo had integration of the Gameboy Advance and the DS on the Gamecube. Yet another Nintendo idea branded gimmicky by developers until a more promiment company offers an implementaion of it. Vibrating controllers being another fine example.

  18. Fourth Quarter Not Confirmed on 27 Playable Wii Games At E3 · · Score: 5, Insightful

Reggie actually said you'd be playing Wii by the fourth quarter. That isn't the same as saying it will launch in the fourth quarter. I wonder if they have a summer surprise up their sleeve... Their biggest launch title is a reworked Gamecube game.

  19. Why just Twilight Princess... on Miyamoto Talks Revolution and Zelda · · Score: 1

I was wondering about this today. Why couldn't Nintendo add support for the Revolution controller to older games? Imagine playing Luigi's Mansion or Pikmin with the Revolution's controller. Assuming that they're not going to be able to sell downloadable versions of their Gamecube games, maybe they could sell downloadable upgrades to older Gamecube games. "For a small fee, download this patch and play Metal Gear Solid the way it was intended!" Perhaps these comments seem inconsequential to Miyamoto because ALL Gamecube games will be able to utilize the controller. Just a thought...

  20. Apple and Nintendo on Sony Already Lost Media War to Apple? · · Score: 1
An article like this makes me think that Apple would do well to offer iTunes on Nintendo's Revolution. The two companies share simililar design philosophies. Apple is clearly branching out into the living room market (Mac Mini dvr?). Nintendo is expressing interest in expanding its hardware via software (Opera on the DS).

It seems to me that offering iTunes on the Revolution would further pry open the door to the living room for Apple and Nintendo would have added functionality to a system which already has a primary focuse on it's online presence.

Continuing the war analogy... "The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

I sometimes wonder, when I read stories like this, if the government is smarter than think. What if these "holes" in national security are just bones the government is throwing to the public to make them seem like they can't hide anything? Just a wacky conspiracy theory for a boring Wednesday afternoon.
