How would having live a camera in your toilet make you feel safer? You're still going to get molested in the showers, only this time it'll be on live xxx internet feeds.

I think that our current prison situation is unacceptable. The amount of rape, violence and criminal behavior that takes place within prisons makes them unsuitable for rehabilitation. Prisons are a breeding ground for diseases like HIV and Hep C. Prison officials aren't doing enough to stop the rape and spread of disease. They're too busy making their millions off of the prisons to care.

I think the public does need to be more exposed to the problems with our prisons. But these jail cams in arizona aren't the way to go about doing that. These cameras aren't being used for education or information. They're being used as exploitation of the prisoners. Putting cameras in the women's toilets is not going to help teenagers stay away from crime.

The sheriff responsible for these cameras is reknowned for his "humiliation" tactics in dealing with criminals. I strongly disagree with his approach in this matter.

  3. *original* NWN on Neverwinter Nights 2 Officially Announced · · Score: 3, Informative

I don't like the way the term "original" NWN is being used for BioWare's NWN 1. The true original NWN was created by StormFront Studios, for SSI. And it was released on the AOL network from 1991 to 1997. It was shut down shortly after AOL went flatrate.

Lots of info on the original NWN can be found at the bladekeep site

IMO, the original NWN was one of the best games I've ever played. Perhaps the best. This was a great game that will never be forgotten by the people lucky enough to have played it during its time.

Many of the players of the original have gone about creating a clone of the original called Forgotten World. I just recently found out about Forgotten World and have been browsing the forums there. Its got alot of the old guilds and names I recognise. ITB, MECH, KEF, GOC.. Man the original nwn was great. PvP in the sewers and lost hills. Feebing kwusses. Ahh, sweet memories.

Anyway, if anyone played the original NWN you should check out Forgotten World. It'll bring back memories.

  4. No mention of Theft in article on Video and Software Downloads Overtaking Music · · Score: 1

One thing I noticed is that the article didn't mention the word 'Theft' anywhere. It referred to the practice as downloading, swapping, sharing, trading, piracy and copyright infringement multiple times. But it never once used the words theft or steal.

I know that so many people get panties riled up when articles say theft instead of infringe, so I thought it was worth mentioning that this article didn't do that. I dislike using the words theft or steal for this purpose, and the article deserve a little bit of credit for not stooping to that.

I remember Carmen Sandiago. It was one of the things that got me excited about history class. The game itself wasn't very effective in teaching me history, or reinforcing what I knew, but it got me excited about going into the history class during grade school. I would go into the class room with anticipation of playing on the computer for half an hour. Sometimes I would be disappointed and find out I was going to have to write a paper or read a book. But every day I remember being excited about going to the class. And just getting kids excited about going to class is a very important thing.

But I would like to see him "pass the hat", so to speak, to another actor who can continue in the same type of Jones adventures. Brandon Fraiser comes to mind.

The Indianna Jones movies have always been fun to watch. It would be great if they were to continue in some way, giving newer generations a reason to go back and watch the series once it becomes "too old". I didn't watch any of the earlier Bond movies until after I had seen Goldeneye (actually it wasn't until after I had seen the movie and beaten the game, but still..).

  21. Re:Support on Profile of a Hard-Core Gamer · · Score: 2, Interesting

Oooh, good question. Its so rarely that I am qualified to respond to a post on /. I'm a game designer, I've been part of several online projects, currently working on this one. I know its not a huge title and its pretty old, but I hope it lends some credibility to my post.

Firstly there is the problem of employment. I'm sure other posters have mentioned it, but ULtima Online had a program where players would volunteer to guide people and handle some basic customer service. This was a pretty typical program that was in place in other persistant commerical multiplayer games at the time, such as EverQuest or GemStone3. EA was eventually sued by the people who were a part of that program. They claimed they were being treated as employees and should get employee benefits. When this happened, the player volunteer program in my game at the time was curtailed. Nobody wants to have to defend a lawsuit. Lawyers are too damn expensive!
I believe AOL had a similar suit filed agaist them by their volunteers.

Aside from legal issues, its very risky to give players any enhanced power or responsibility within the game world. MMOG Players are often not very nice people. These games bring out the worst in people. I know, I see the support emails about friends stealing items, passwords, etc. I read the chatlogs filled with hateful, vicious comments. Upset or angry players will write the most obscene emails they can, saying how much they hate the game and they'll never play it again, only to turn around a few days later and plead to get their account and characters back.

In short, players are often very unpredictable. Even the most seemingly well-mannered people will have their moments (we all do, its human nature). They could disagree with a new item or skill and feel insulted that they "weren't listened to", "being ignored", etc. Or worse, there could be outside issues affecting the players life, and they have a breakdown within the game. When things like this happen it will hurt business, give a bad image of the game, and scare away new players (which are the most important ones). EverQuest might not have a problem absorbing it, being that they have close to half a million accounts. But as the number of accounts decreases, these outbursts have a more potent effect.

Then compare the problems to the potential benefits, which are reletively small. Some active characters to enhance the roleplaying atmosphere of a roleplaying game are certainly good things to have.. but data from my games has shown that the impact of feature characters isn't signifigant. Players mostly want new items, new things to play with, and new areas (in that order). And as the population of a game scales up, so must the number of active feature characters.. adding more risk and potential problems. As well as organizational problems. Each of these players will have their own ideas on how the game world should develop. It takes some pretty tight reigns and a watchful eye to make sure that they aren't taking things in a direction you don't want to go. That monitoring takes resources which most teams just don't have. Maintaining an online games takes alot of time.. its much worse than any "normal business" project I was a part of. But its fun, most of the time.

I understand the idea. Its an idea that everyone has. In fact it was one of the first things I suggested when I was hired as a designer for my first online game, and I was given this speech then (minus the lawsuit stuff, of course).

In the end, it would be really nice to have the extra hands helping with the game. The risks and resources required do not outweigh the disadvantages.

One thing to note, though, is that the mmog Shadowbane has done something along the lines of what was suggested. They have hired a team to play Feature Characters on their servers. Since they are hired employees
