It's not a question of if the shutdown was the right think to do. It definitely was, the system thought there were a problem, it shutted down.
The problem here is that the system acted on corrupt data thinking it was the right data. It could (almost) as easily keep running when it should fail, if the opposite data was fed in a cooling failure situation.
I don't know which Europe are you refering to, I've lived in Europe for all my life and have never seen any of those things you say. About racism, I can elighten you that is not behaviour that's encouraged around here, but even last summer some right extremists add a manifestation against african aliens (in other words black pepople, they stand for Europe as Mexicans for USA). Around most european countrys even those more extremists have the right to say what they think without any problem.
About porn, you are right, in US you can sneak some porn, in Europe you don't need to sneak, it sells in newspaper stands anywhere! In some (I would say the majority) country's the vendors even sell it to teenagers (though the law says it can only be sold to people over 18 or 16 in some countrys).
Why every time Microsoft launches a new version of their OS we have to listen to a herd of asses whining about how they can't use Linux!
We all know you're dumb alredy, you don't need to keep saying that in 6 years you were'nt able to do something most of us can pull in less than 6 months (I know I did back in 1998 when I replaced my Windows Desktop with a Linux one).
I simply just don't believe in their capacity to make good software and don't trust them. There are reasons for this too. I've used Microsoft products since 1988 and though I used IBM's PC-DOS (the one with the ibmdos.com and ibmbio.com instedd of MS's io.sys msdos.sys) and not MS-DOS some friend got me a copy of an early version of windows that I rarely used just cause I couldn't get the point, I could do the same without it and keep more free memory for my applications (and believe me at that time memory was a big problem, lots of applications required a big chunk of the first 640KB to be free. I started disliking their products at that time just cause I didn't get the point of why someone should use it (I was 13 then, now I understand not everyone is capable of understanding how a computer works, and windows were trying to be a layer between the computer and dumb users, a very bad and weak layer, but a layer still). When rumors started about something called "Windows Chicago" I was one of those o got excited about it, I had been struggling to keep my computer up to date for years and the rumors were that it would solve the protected memory problems, that it would revive old computers back, etc... But... when it came out, it was what we all know, none of those problems were solved and some of them even got worst. Beeing that the first big Microsoft software I was thinking of using we can say that my confidence in their software droped almost to 0. By 1996 I started working, repairing computers... for thoose of you who never did it, most of the times the computers were ok. The problem? Software, of course. I did that for 2 years and by the time I ended it, I was pretty shure Microsoft software sucked big time. My next job was in 1998 and started as a sort of help desk in a corporation with 200 machines, almost all of the desktops where windows and some where Mac's (yes the Mac's at the time sucked even worse than windows, but things change and now I have one:D) that only served to make my opinion on windows even worse. Meanwhile I had some Linux formation. Beeing in a not very developed country (Portugal) where the first ISP only apeared in 1995 and where until 2000 most of the people didn't had internet and just 2 or 3 years ago broadband started to replace dial-up, I had never had access to Linux before, but quickly I switched to Linux. Was good to finaly have a good OS that returned me the control of my computer and didn't crash regularly. By 1999 I was using Linux desktop, and beeing the only IT guy who took real advantage of the Linux formation we add, the IT department director (the only other guy using Linux) promoted me to Sys Admin where I helped and learned from him to administer Linux machines. Since then I've been using Linux on my desktop, except on a Powerbook I brought where I use Mac OS X. And this long story is the reason why I don't like Microsoft's software. Because they always say the software will do wonders and then it do nothing of what they say, I tend to distrust the hype they seel before releasing a software.
The reason I distrust them is for all those known issues with lotus, netscape, dr-dos more recently with Linux. Apart from those issues I see an attitude coming from microsoft that makes me don't trust them, and that is the fact that they seem to drive the technology not to where it would benefit most their clients but to where it benefits their sales.
So, I don't really hate them, I don't even dislike them. I just don't trust them and don't like their software. The day they release a good software that don't stay in the way of what it should do, and I enphasize the "release" part, not say they will release, but actualy do it, I will gladly use it.
... if I were one and I wanted to leave USA I would probably go for one of the North European countrys, Netherlands, Denmark, Sueden, etc...
What would stop me? The same reason that keeps me stranded where I am... The fact that I've a job and wouldn't leave it for incertainity just cause I feel like it, the fact that those countrys speak strange languages, and beeing in a zone where the weather is warm I wouldn't easely leva for those very cold countrys, but that's a problem that part of the north americans don't have!
I once installed 3 gentoo in HP servers in 2 days! I had even installed a gentoo from a stage1 2 or 3 years ago in a 486 and it didn't took nothing close of 10 days but it took 3 or 4 days to compile everything (I wasn't near the computer all the time to start the next task so some of the time the computer was just siting there waiting)!
Not that I've read the description of what's a dormant gamer, but beeing me an ex-gamer (not much of an hardcore but a frequent gamer) that nowadays barely play anything cause I'm sick and tired of the same games with a new name over and over... As soon as I get my hands on a game that's worth my time, here I go...:D

That's why! Like some have alredy said, non intrusive add servers like google adds are ok, so I don't block them! Any add that I consider too intrusive for the said reasons I block the server from where it's coming.
