What is wrong with the headline? It leaves out the important "law firm". As it reads it implies that she was on the direct payroll of MSFT. That is not the case. The law firm she was a partner at was retained by MSFT. Go look at some of the comments on here and you can see many people believe she was an employee of MSFT. There is a distinct difference.
credit and various other id cards can be easily photographed. A negative can survive a lot and still be usuable while a thumb drive might not. If I were to go electronic I would go with a compact flash over the thumb drive. Of course you'll need a reader, but they are pretty wide spread now a days.
Yes I do. Look at Microsoft. Have they made money on anything other than the OS and Office? Their countless failures to find anything worthwhile to do with their cash horde prompted a huge dividend payout last year.
Will there be a market for this? Sure. There will be people who just want 'free' regardless of the speed or other restrictions/privacy concerns. And there will a base of mobile users. That doesn't necessarily translate into great profits.
Also of note, for the home user, with Verizon pushing FIOS now will wifi/wimax satisfy peoples needs?
and probably better too. And if its not cheaper, it won't be a lot more than fixing whats up there - and who knows when the next thing goes wrong with the aging Rubble.
The Hurricane disaster plan inplace for New Orleans stated that the primary means of evacuation was private vehicles (ie cars) and the secondary was to be city and school buses.
The mayor left 400+ sitting in a lot when they could have been one way tickets to Baton Rouge. Thats 60,000 people that could have been moved well away from the city and to the nearest real relief.
Balls in your court Ray.
Oh and to the Snopes people - Bush called the Governor on SATURDAY and told her to order the evacuation. But all Dems think Bush is a dope so why should she listen to him. And that Natl Hurricane Center.. all Bush appointees too.
Programmers in mainframe and Unix shops make the most, topping $59,000 a year in base salary. By development language environment, programmers in CICS and COBOL shops fare best, drawing average salaries of almost $62,000 for CICS-based development and $59,000 for COBOL.

the mayor of new orleans and the governor of Louisiana who have direct control and authority over the police forces, national guard and all other government agencies. Instead of your not so veiled stab at Bush why don't you ask those who were responsible for their citizens well being why they didn't have or ask for these resources? Bush declared a 3 state disaster area before the storm hit. They had at least 48 hours warning and could have gotten a lot had they opened their mouth.
And don't forget the zone is more than the same camera crews outside of the superdome or on a hiway overpass. It is 90,000 square miles of complete anhilation.
libertarian stuff aside the point of the cameras is not to prevent a terrorist attack - the odds of that are virtually nil. What they will be used for is to assist in the capture of non-martyr terrorists, criminals, or identifying dead terrorists. So if you are going to argue the libertarian case then argue it against what they really are there for.
As for the other part of this contract, I'm not sure what kind of crack or meth these people are smoking when they decide to wire up the subway system for cell phones. Even if they are not doing the tunnel proper, the signal will still propogate a bit out of the station, and frankly will a bomb detonated in the station instead of in the tunnel be that much worse? Our military are using signal blockers in Iraq to try to prevent IED's being triggered by cell phones and here we make it just that much easier to be used in a mass casualty environment, all in the name of some dope being able to call his friend and tell them they are getting on the subay. Freaking genius!
sorry so late but was out of office today.. so this google offer is unusual in that the vast majority of aquisitions are stock based, sometimes with a cash kicker but rarely all cash except for relatively small deals (a few 100 million).
So why does Google go this route of raising cash first when they already have about 2.5B in liquidity? My suspicion is they either a)expect a significant decline in the stock price and are taking advantage of the current high price to increase liquidity (note they said general corporate purposes which does not in any sense obligate them to make a takeover), b) expect a significant decline in their stock price which could present difficulties for an all stock deal and hence wish ot increase cash on hand in case it is needed to sweeten the pot
This also could be, though a review of the original filing would be needed, a way for the insiders to unload some stock down the road. Issue new stock today to raise cash, buy some company down the road for stock, arrange an internal private equity deal where insider sells all or some portion of the necessary shares back to the company and receives cash at the current market price. This would be advantageous to the company were the stock price below where they float this new offering as they would have excess cash left on the books.
Wouldn't the solution be to use phones implementing a PGP or similar solution with the key input by the enduser? Of course that would cost money and be opposed by the government, but you would think the market could provide such equipment for those who feel they need/want it
Interesting.. Thanks for the answer. I've also wondered about the survivability of the fiber lines/system. Outside of the city its still strung up on poles like the old system, AFAIK. At least I didn't seem verizon digging up every street in the town! In a hurricane or similar, will they have a lot more to replace compare to POTS?
In my area Verizon has been rolling out FIOS. What I am wondering is if this is a way for them to cut their power usage? FIOS requires end user provided power w/ battery backup. Any engineers know the details? Is the homeowner now proving power to ring the line?
Ok.. so after the "Shuttle has taken off" "The shuttle is in space" "The shuttle is on the way home" how much more 'value added' is there to any comment on a "Shuttle lands ok" story? Sure if it had broken up or crashed again there would be. But whats left to say at this point that hadn't already been said?
I guess this is off topic in one sense but not in that it applies to this/. post. But I'm curious how the editors see something like 'shuttle has landed' as something that belongs? I mean come on..
CNN/FOX/MSNBC/CBS/ABC/NBC/BBC/SKY/AP/ and any other tv/wire service had this the moment it happened. Perhaps if there was some value added to the post it would be relevant but I just don't get it when the editors put up stories that are simply statements of the obvious from an extremely well reported event.
in fact its short term investments, usually bills or the like. One could argue Crisco could use that 14B to pay for a large part of the deal, but there is no way Nokia goes with out a premium of at least 20%, or $14B. Hence you are left with a $120 odd billion market cap company with at most $18B in tangible assets trying to pay for $70B. Its unlikly (to me) that Nokia or its shareholders would be receptive to a merger of equals approach and hence this would be treated as a hostile acquisition. Bad news for Cisco shareholders when Nokia ownders dump $70B of stock on the market. Can't see Cisco financing that much in debt or new equity either.
this is not making CIA or other 3 letters around the globe very happy. These websites are/were a valuable source of information on the jihadists and what they were up to, one of the very few windows available. Remember that intel isn't all cloak and dagger.
I'm curious, in the general case, where does it say I have a legal obligation to provide any such information to the vendor at all? Is it contained in the user manual? Driver disk?
If I walk by a paper vending machine and see that the lock is broken and people are just helping themself to papers, am I legally obligated to call that company to alert them?
Why should softare/hardware companies be treated any different than consumer product companies? Many times the first you hear of a defect is through TV or the press - not the company. Do they then run out and sue the reporter or person who discovered the problem?
I can see moral arguments in certain extreme cases, but that does not necessarily transfer to a legal obligation.
The problem is probably less to do with the need for a 9 track and more to do with the physical quality of the tape. They tend to basically turn to dust because they are so brittle and require special handling if they can be used at all
most people ignore it. When pops recently got FIOS from verizon (crappy east coast monopoly) I read the TOS and found strict prohibitions against running any kind of server. This is pretty sad given how much bandwidth is available so its probably not something I (someone who might want to run some services) would want to pick up. But unless you delve into it you'll never know that until after the fact.
I have no problems with him asking for the raw data or computer code. Likewise asking for information on sources of grants. I would skip the detailed personal finance questions unless there was significant cause to suspect they were getting payments from outside sources.
While this guy is probably in the pocket of the oil lobby, it does stand to reason that congress will need to make decisions which could cause the spending of billions of dollars and have far reaching effects on our manufacturing industry as well as energy production. If that isn't justification enough for asking for the raw data I'm not sure what is.
