you're right about the ethernet thing, i was surprised it was left off the list.
however, i don't think windows ce is as big an issue as you think. this machine is not for "heavyweight" tasks, it's for rock bottom functionality (which is what most machines end up used for anyway, let's face it).
i like linux and bsd as much as the next guy, but they are simply not ready for the desktop... even the mini-desktop.
their day will come, but now is not the time to force linux on the masses. doing so might end up making a foundation for an os as lousy as windows in the future.
you're walking talking proof that apple needs to rekindle the "take a mac home trial" of yesteryear. they built the retail stores to help that cause, but there is something to be said for a company if they are willing to let the customer use the machine for ten days at home before buying.
apple charges a premium for their machines, and i agree with them that they should. but if they truly believe their machines are the best, then they shouldn't be afraid to let people really get into them over a period of time.
it has been a long time since many users have had a mac they could use regularly, and i think a program like this will allow a lot of people a no risk way to get reacquainted.
1) Clone the iPod interface
2) Add support for all formats
3) Longer lasting accumulator (more than 18 months)
4) Cheaper than the iPod
5) Longer custommer support
all good things, i agree. surely a player like this would be an ipod killer.
that said, the ipod interface is patented, so cloning it could turn into a pretty nasty legal fight. adding longer cusotmer support will make the desired "cheaper" impossible. supporting all formats may invoke the wrath of legit music stores using competing formats that will lead to your new player getting no/bad press.
there's this principle democratic nations have called "freedom of the press". although watching cnn has made me wonder if it's just a catchphrase these days.
on behalf of canada i can say that you would meet little if any resistance. i think we have 42 people currently in the army, and a helicopter that doubles as a six flags kiddie ride.
or, in slashdottable terms:
"i for one will welcome our gun-toting american overlords."
yeah, yeah, i'm sorry, you're sorry, everybody's sorry... quit blaming your users.
that aside, i think this article is a little more proof that anti-virus programs like norton, are ineffective these days. the way they function needs to be re-thought badly.
i hope to see the cost of devices like this one come down to more consumer friendly levels in the future.
anyone have any ideas on how anti-virus can be improved?
i don't think google is, nor should be, responsible for trying to change foreign policy. if china wants to censor their internet, that's their perogative. while i may not necessarily agree with china's policy regarding the internet, it's not any of our business.
is there a version of google local for PDA's?
that would be more than a little useful for people with wireless enabled pda's like blackberry etc.
also, i am really disturbed by the inability of the american slashdotters to use the term "eh" in a sentence. for information on how to properly use "eh", see this article at harvard.edu
man, thanks, i didn't think it was flamebait either.
i used to work at the local technical institute, so i feel ya on the no one gets fired or promoted thing. there was a room their with nothing but receptionists. they didn't necessarily receive anything, they were just there, in case customer service or a dept head needed one.
most likely they were there just to make sure there was money in the budget for next year.
i think a lot of slashdotters scan posts, and at a glance, mine looked like flamebait. whatever, it's just slashdot. the whole reason i come here is to see flamebait, and a lot of times the comments are so shortsighted that it all looks like flamebait to me anyway.
you're code references a 1x1 gif spacer... doesn't make these guys an less stupid though.
the bastards even had the nerve to pilfer bandwidth from redhat (from redhat-fedora.com page source):
good thing we didn't give them a good slashdotting.
i'd agree if you didn't have to compile your own viruses.
let's not forget that we are adviced to install it immediately.
hey hey, settle down now, i am a mac user, and i wrote this not too long ago.
bear in mind that to average joe sixpack, the bottom end machines determine who has the cheapest computer.
just trying to make fun of things.
considering how much macs cost, i doubt we'll hear about many "burger flipping" mac users.

pick two.

we don't want them either.
we're not part of your family.
for ten years old, it sure looks 30... good thing it has a firey grandson to carry on the legacy.
anyone else read that title and think, "the russians are making fun of the mars mission?" ?
in soviet russia, you go down on paypal.
"Shoplifters of the world / Unite and take over" - The Smiths
because it's easy.
but we all know what happens when the easy path is taken, don't we?
if i had to choose between /. and Dell for tech support, no contest, i'd be posting.

wanna really see them twitch?
take away their cellphones too.

so, do i spend my hard earned money on:
i'll be safer with HAL i'm guessing.
