  1. Re:Am I weird? on Halo 2 World Tourney Finals - Aussie Champ's View · · Score: 1

Well IMHO your config is suboptimal because you wast to fingers for farward/backward, plus the fact that giving spave to right isnt that good on most keyboards (because space usually has worse feedback when hitting non-centred).

I would argue that I can naturally react and move more fluidly though. I've done the arrow key position (which is what WASD is if I'm not mistaken), and you have to lift your finger off the W and move it to the D to change directions. I don't have to do that. It's probably not a huge difference, but when you refer to a game as a "twitch" game, every little bit counts I imagine.

As to the SPACE, my thumb rests naturally in the middle when I play so no biggie :)

  2. Am I weird? on Halo 2 World Tourney Finals - Aussie Champ's View · · Score: 1

I've never used WASD. I just place my hand on the keyboard like normal: ASDF[SPACE].

    • F: forward
    • D: back
    • S: strafe left
    • SPACE: strafe right
    • A: jump

I now have... six keys I can reach with little to no stretch with my little finger without letting off of the movement buttons. Of course, I don't strafe in two directions at the same time, so that leaves at least one additional finger to press a myriad of buttons at all times as well. Plus my fingers don't feel squished into a tiny arrow key configuration.

I'm not a professional gamer and rarely play anymore, but I've always felt that to be way more intuitive than the arrow key configuration.

  3. LED placement on Top Mice Compared · · Score: 1

I think alot of reviews miss out on this, and to me, it's important. I've used quite a few mice in my time (I have... three attached to my desktop atm: Gyromouse for laying back, MX900 for general use, and a Razer Viper for playing games), one of the things that really matters in the feel of a mouse (especially in games and more so than wireles lag imo) is the LED placement. The MX1000 puts the LED (well, laser) right in the center of your palm. So, say I want to move my cursor to the left. How I'd normally do it is tilt the mouse ever so slightly (I have sensitivity set very high and tend to move my mouse with my fingers). My arm doesn't actually move. You can't do that well when the LED is in the center of your palm. You have to move the whole mouse and gernerally your arm. The MX1000 is shaped in such a way that it discourages moving the mouse with your fingers as well.

With the Razer Viper, the LED is placed a little forward from the middle of your palm more near the base of your fingers. This enables your to move the cursor with less movement of the mouse, which I prefer. The shape of the mouse also helps. It's not shaped to be gripped like a handle. It's a pretty passive shape that allows me to hold the mouse with my fingers and the LED is placed nearer to my finger tips. I prefer the Razers to most Logitech mice for those reasons. In games at least, as I haven't tried the Diamondback. I use the MX900 for web browsing more basically due to the extra buttons.

  5. Treo on Just a Phone? · · Score: 1

I like my Treo 650 (well, mostly). Granted alot of phones have things I don't care about. Like, mine has a camera. Now, I'd love a camera on my phone, but it's a VGA camera, and if it's not going to be a decent camera, I'd just as soon go without.

But, again, I like all my features. Of course I probably do have AADD. But having all my most used information and needs in one place is convenient. Shopping lists, calendar (that has alerts), contacts list with pretty much everything I need to know about the people, ability to connect to my PC or mac in case I forgot a file (great if you forgot to bring your homework etc), voice recognition dialing (as opposed to ordinary voice dialing which I hate), internet along with all its uses like email. I use alot of the features on my phone and very few of them do I use just for play. (I don't have any games on my phone actually, though I do have mp3s on the sd card.)

I don't need the phone to last days on a charge, as I have no problem plugging it in every night. I just want it to last 20 hours during heavy usage.

But I do see the minimilists point of view too. I don't care about cameras unless they're of reasonable quality, so I'd take my camera out for a price cut. And, I do think people are so obsessed with adding new things that they forget to improve what's already there. The primary feature of the phone is voice communication; if it can't do that well, it sucks.

I wish they'd improve bluetooth technology on phones (or use a different one perhaps). Bluetooth 2.0 is out and 1.2 has been out, yet still even high end phones come with 1.1. How about ditching the crappy camera and giving me bluetooth 2.0 since it's something that's actually useful (more bandwidth, better reception, AND better battery life)? It seems they're so feature conscious, they put in inferior versions of features, because they're essentially living beyond their means.

I'd rather have a good camera and good phone than a crappy camera/phone combination etc. But, I'd prefer to either of those a great camera/phone/etc combination, and I'd be willing to pay for it. To me, this is what's missing from cell phones these days. I also would be up for a bluetooth headset that is the phone with no other features.

"Fair enough, but they have to fall in love somehow and without turning the whole movie into a romance it had to be rushed. It's unfortunate that their love is so pivotal to the story, yet not interesting enough to be its own movie so it can be properly told." I agree; it is sad. I get tired of people saying they don't want Star Wars being a romance flick. Well, that's the whole reason Anakin goes down the dark side. (Well, that and his penchant for egotism.) It IS a romance flick... just one that ends badly for the main character. The fact that he rushed it made it worse than it could have been. You can't appease the people that just want to see pretty lights and hear cliche' testosterone laden Han Solo quips, so don't bother. However, if you're going to add some attempt at a serious motivation behind Anakin's insanity, at least dedicate some real time to it. In my opinion, Lucas should have slashed the whole Jar Jar side story and the pod race and used that time to focus some on Anakin's training at the temple and his dwellings on Padme. The whole Anakin/Padme thing seems way too much like Romeo and Juliet: impetuous. But even with R&J the whole play was dedicated to the two of them and their dealings. You have to give more than some frolicking on Naboo if you want people to take their relationship seriously (which they need to if they're going to understand Anakin's later decisions).

But... if they can't afford good effects (and even if they could), isn't decent acting one of the main features of a movie? No one's suggesting they should have gotten a "Hollywood actor" (and many of them can't act their way out of a paper bag), simply that someone should have said perhaps "... Hows about we tone it down on the whole evil voice thing, eh dear?" A good story and good acting to carry it is what makes a good (non-fluff) movie.

Why shouldn't we have an opinion on it? Because we can potentially watch it for free? Because it's fanfilm? Bah.

I for one don't think I could sit through it from what I've seen. In fact, I was embarrassed while watching the preview. (The Scifi remake of Dune comes to mind.) If anyone doesn't like that, tough luck. If you don't want opinions on something, don't put it out on the web for others to see.
