I was discussing this with one of the ATT reps the other day actually. I think the lack of 3G is a calculated move on Apple's part. I have a 3G phone now with ATT, and the service is insanely bad. I don't think the lack of 3G is due to a lack of 3G coverage so much as the usability of 3G with ATT currently is awful enough to make you want to pull out your hair. (I'll blame my loss of hair on that.) The thing with 3G that I've noticed is: it can't hand off correctly. At least however ATT does it (I don't know how it's supposed to work). My phone switches back and forth from EDGE to 3G sitting at my desk at work. I take a call... it drops randomly (fewest dropped calls... gotta love it...). My signal bar goes to 0 and the phone switches networks. I wound up having to keep it on EDGE as standard and only switch to the 3G network when I wanted to use the phone as a modem. (And I needed a program that made that a reasonable solution.) You could tell me it's the phone, but then I'd just tell you it's a Cingular branded phone (an HTC).

I think Apple, if faced with bleeding edge or solid, is going to pick solid. That just seems to be their MO, and I don't blame them. I've been telling myself that I don't want the iPhone due to the lack of 3G, but in reality, 3G has been the biggest headache since I started using it. And God help you when you call ATT support about anything network/data related. They know less than I do (and that's saying something). They should read the Cingular wiki to get a better idea of what services they offer.

I think Apple made a good decision with keeping out 3G actually. At least if they're rolling the phone out soon. I've had HORRIBLE exprerience with the 3G network of Cingular down here in south florida (boca raton area). Like... I can't make phones calls 75% of the time (being forgiving with that number... i actually expected my calls to not go through). The phone (Cing 8525... or tytn... or hermes... whatever you want to call it... it's an HTC...) would either beep at me thrice or I would get a "All lines are currently busy" message... all the time. I eventually installed a program that allows me to turn off 3G support... which allows me to make calls. When I want to use the internet, I turn it back on. Customers aren't going to want to do that, and they shouldn't be expected to. And when the phone has these problems, fingers are going to be pointed at Cingular and Apple... EDGE pretty much always works... at least as much as cell phone networks ever do.

Is it slow? Definitely. But, at least it isn't infuriatingly buggy. You can check email fine through EDGE, though I hated browsing the web for it. The only reason I haven't demanded my money back for my current phone is, quite frankly, I bought it more for the ability to use it as a modem than I did to have a phone... I'm not much for phones. However, phone works great on EDGE. iPhone will work great on EDGE. If Cingular ever fixes their 3G network, the new version of the iPhone will have 3G. Simple as that.

Balances out? How about instead of the world coming down to their side or your side, it comes down to what's true and what isn't true?? And if so, how is putting out even more false information balancing anything out?

And if that isn't working... quite frankly, if you're the underdog, participating in falsifying information is especially risky from a pragmatic point of view. Why break the status quo to adopt the thinking of someone you've caught repeatedly lying/exaggerating to you? Cynicism and the idea that you can't trust any side generally seems to eventually beat people down into just accepting the status quo: which is not you.

Yah, but how often to they actually wind up with the moderation they implied they'd get? The statements are made, because people know beforehand their opinions aren't taken well. It's a way of saying "I'm about to piss you off, but let m explain my point before you decide to e-castrate me." That's different than what the article is talking about which is just a total misinterpretation of tone.

As someone said, random statements demonstrate nothing. Tone is something you get better at as you get to know someone, and some people are naturally better at picking up on tone. It's also more easily determined when placed in context of other statements.

I'm not really sure becoming a "better writer" is going to help much here. Even good writers get their tones confused by others. I've heard many professor give previous writings as a justification of interpretation, because intent/tone couldn't be ascertained from the writing itself.

The picture at theatres has sucked for ages, and the sound isn't any better than most surround systems I've been around; it's just louder. That's easy to fix at home.

I used to go to theatres alot back when I was with my ex, but that was just to do something different than sit at home all night (we sat somewhere else!) Now I have a love/hate relationship with the theatres. I want to go, but when I do, I tend to not enjoy myself for above reasons. All the people problems weren't as much as an issue when the sound was comparitively good and the picture was so big. Now, when I look at the picture, all I think about is all the scratches on it.
