For a few months now I have been tossing the idea around in my head of requiring a license to access the net. I have posted this before, so I will make this brief, but just a simple security course. If your machine becomes infected and infects other machines, you loose you license. Simple and effective.
License the net
Just like a car; before you can use the net; you have to pass a test. Nothing too hard, just the basics of security. And, just like a car, you get in an accident that is your fault (open a exe that you know you shouldn't have/drive on the sidewalk (both equally stupid)) you loose your license. Depending on the offecnce you will loose your license for x years. Simple!
Wow. Very well said. Now if they did this, we may actually see a slow down in AOL machines that are so infected with crap they don't work. I do tech support and one of the first questions in our script is "are you using AOL?". I cring whenever I get a yes, as I know it's going to be a loooon call. I had one yesterday where the customers computer was so infected with crap, we couldn't even go to google. He would just get porn. I do tech support for a product that is setup over the net, so he was out of luck. I just told him to get ad-aware, but if was intergrated, he would have been ok, well for the most part.
some good ideas in what you said
Somehow because of this link, I ended up reading Commando reviews, and now I'm watching the movie again on VHS. Thanks for the link! Now time for some mindless voilence, Arnie style@!
I hate M$... but do I hate spam more?
it's the the elections; which peice of scum do you vote for? (I'm candian btw; so I'm talking canadian politics here)
I guess we all loose whoever wins.
and the year before that? and the year before that? I'm too lazy to check but I think this has been posted in at least some variation over the last few years. It's really just a BAD idea, as anyone that would know what to do with the CD, already knows where to get it.
I only have ONE person in my entire family I could send this to. ONE!
I got a letter from my ISP about this. They got a letter from the MPAA about my online movie grabbings. You know what my ISP did? they sent me a letter TELLING ME in exact steps how to DISABLE uploads in about 12 P2P apps.
I love living in Canada:)
what; so if both Linux customers actually buy the thing; it won't be a total flop?
Sorry, I couldn't resist; it's a windows world, and this is just a bad business decision.
Hopefully it will do well, but only time will tell that
But what about games that require net access? As much as we would all like to, you just can't get rid of the internet/windows combo. Sure you can setup firewalls, and use a linux box as one, but if you a gamer, it's just not possible to get rid of the net on your windows box.
My g/f is visually impaired and has many friends that are visually impaired and blind. Because they cannot drive it is often hard for them to get all the groceries they need. Services like this are really helping that segment of the population. They all love it and think it's one of the greatest things ever. It is truely amazing how much you learn (as a fully sighted person) when you interact with people that do not have the luxuary of full sight. Services like these are just another thing that makes their lives much eaiser. I hope they stay around for that fact alone.
I couldn't have said that better myself. We all know Linux is the superior O/S, but until the games will run on it as easy as they do on Windows, it will always be OUR (slashdot crowd) O/S. The common end user wants some basic things from an OS
- Word (or something like it)
- Outlook (or something like it)
- Internet Explorer (or something like it)
- GAMES!! (current ones, like far cry and HL2)
If the O/S can't provide these, then it's no good for most end users.
That security is inversely proportional to usability; increase one and the other suffers. It makes sense to a point; as the most secure systems are (usually) the most simple ones; but that usually means no net; no HDD; etc; and more of an emphasis on Physical security. Once you start connect machines to other machines (increasing usability) you inherently decrease security. Just some thoughts
that build our own PC's? I am assuimg this is most of the slashdot crowd. So what is going to happen, will this only affect pre-built machines, like from Dell and the like, or will all motherboards suddenly include Windows and a cost increase to pay for said copy of Windows? I really hope not...:( (and no I did NOT RTFA, so don't ask)
That build our own? Does this mean that the cost of a new motherboard will include the cost of windows, or will this only affect pre-built systems? I really hope manufactures (especially ASUS) still make motherboards with a regular BIOS.
Just 2c
Very simple. EVERY single ISP should be REQUIRED by law to implement a system where each user is limited to say 100 e-mails a day. This would stop much of the spam. I realize this would only be effective in north america, and yes I have thought about spammers signing up for multipal accounts; but this measure would make it much more difficult and expensive for them to do it from their homes.
Just my 2c
Who's to say what is speeding? Without data to confirm the speed of the cars around you, who's to say you were just not keeping up with traffic? On most roads/highways (at least here in Ontario) a slower driver is more likely to cause accidents due to pissed off people trying to pass. Unless there is data regarding the speed of everyone around you, your argument can just be "I was just going as fast as everyone around me". There would be no way to prove either side of this 100% without data from all the cars around you. Eyewitnesses don't count as most people under/over estimate speed by quite a bit..
Burning too goo for em,
hanging's too good for em,
they should be chopped up into itty bitty peices and burried alive!!
Why don't we just throw "spam" at their houses till the give up? I'm sure the hot florida/california sun will make a great smelling house:)
you have 12 remotes? www.logitech.com/harmony (Yes I work there!) :D

totaly OT; but I wish I had mod points for this
The only way I can get in is via the RSS feed in Firefox
totaly weird....
before. On BBSPOT.com, about a month ago. I'm way too lazy to look it up, but if anyone else wants to/remembers go for it

Doesn't appear to work correctly with Mozilla... but that could also be zone alarm stopping it.

works fine in 1.7
