No need to wait for a US release. Gameboys don't have region coding so you can get the Japanese version through your favorite importer and play it on your US or Euro Gameboy.
It won't lower ticket prices but there can be quite a number of benefits from digital cinema.
Quality of image- film prints deteriorate over time and w/each play. Going digital, the film will look as good the 10,000 time as the first time.
Speed of distribution- Currently prints have to be distributed to each theater. With digital, they can set up satellite distribution so people worldwide can receive the movie at the same time.
Flexibility within multiplexes- Say you have the rights to "Hulk" this weekend in your 20 screen multiplex. All 5 screens of "Hulk" sell out. With digital prints which could conceivably be stored on your in-house network, you could open up an extra screen to show "Hulk" instead of another movie that no-one wants to watch. Also, if "Hulk" turns out to be a dud, you could shut down one screen and show "Matrix Reloaded" instead.
This achieved exactly what Acclaim wanted. They haven't even let them fly yet and they've already generated lots of free publicity.
Before tasteless pigeon stunt: nobody heard of Virtua Tennis 2.
After tasteless pigeon stunt: lots of people have heard of their game.
Unfortunately, this is likely to be negative publicity. Yes, it's worth a minor laugh but will it really make people want to buy the game? Most likely not. Probably will turn a bunch of people off from buying it.
Too bad about Rocket's demise. You could also go with a PDA or a tablet pc for reading. Both are good alternatives w/ their own pros and cons of course.
PDA: small, lightweight, but small screen, larger files may be a problem.
Tablet PC: great when reading in portrait mode. can also double as a regular laptop but heavier (around 3lbs), more expensive.
Personally, I think the tablet pc is great. i have an acer. portrait mode is great for reading not just ebooks but web pages as well. It can get a little warm though and it's tiring to hold it after a while. Still, i'm able to use it as a laptop and tablet and that's exactly what i wanted.
I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things).
I've currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work. This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, and I'd like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them:-)
Linus
PS. Yes - it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-hard disks, as that's all I have:-(.
Seven or eight years ago, everyone I knew used ICQ. Gradually, people shifted to AIM. I still don't know how that happened but at some point AIM reached critical mass and most people I knew dumped ICQ entirely.
ICQ had more features (able to msg people offline) and AIM was and is relatively featureless. Maybe that's what people like. Just the basics.
In any case, I use Trillian to log on to all the different services at once. (Jabber is another option).
For those of you complaining about ICQ bloat, there's ICQ Lite (link is to the alpha version that can communicate with AIM)
I wonder how many people are holding off on buying the dvds until all three movies are out? I know I'd like to own the dvds but I'm waiting for the super box set of the extended versions of the entire trilogy to come out. same with the matrix trilogy. wonder if this waiting is affecting their sales figures.
i played this game when it first came out. it's amazing that such a game could be free. of course, it serves as propaganda/recruitment tool and supported by the taxpayer's dollar but still it was really fun.
as with most online games, a variety of problems developed. cheats and just plain jerks, team killers, "rambo" types ruined the experience. they also had a bunch of network issues. i haven't played for months now. hopefully they've fixed those things.
The best thing about the redesigned iPod is the cradle instead of plugging in a firewire cable. This is a more consumer friendly idea, like the cradle for Kodak digital cameras.
Many have complained about the lack of a headphone jack. Here's his answer from the interview:
Q: One of the main complaints people have about the SP is its lack of built-in headphone jack. What was the reason behind removing it?
KS: Well, you can use headphones with the SP if you plug in an adapter, of course. In the beginning we planned to include the jack, but from a purely physical standpoint, we just couldn't get it in. (laughs) If we put the port in, then that's that much cubic volume we can't use for other parts of the GBA. We were worried, of course, how people would respond to that, but when we looked at our research, we found that the percentage of people that use headphones with their GBA is actually pretty low. It's low, but there are people that use them, so we decided to build the system with the majority of users in mind and, at the same time, also accommodate the rest of the people that play it with the adapter. It was a compromise, you could say.
The designer says:
That was where the basic flip-top design came from. It's something that's never been done with game machines before, so I liked the idea right off.
Nintendo has always focused on the children's market. This was the correct strategy when they first started with the NES because very few adults played video games. It was children who were most able to immerse themselves in Super Mario, Contra, etc. and children propelled the buying of consoles, games, etc. Nintendo designed graphics have always been cartoonish and cute rather than hard edged and realistic. The most recent Nintendo mega-hit remains the Pokemon craze, something almost exclusively targeted at children.
However, it's 20 years later and those kids have grown up. A large percentage of gamers now are not children, but young adults. They want harder edged, "cooler" games. Halo, Grand Theft Auto, etc. Nintendo has either failed to grasp that or out of fear of alienating their kid-friendly fan base, have ceded that territory to Sony and Microsoft.
The question now is whether Nintendo has the right strategy. Is there enough room for a kid-focused gaming console or will adults simply buy a PS2 for their children because then there'll be games that they can enjoy as well?
Matrix: great movie, not so great MMORPG?

Matrix MMORPG

· Score: 5, Informative
MMORPGs like Ultima Online and Everquest have people roleplaying, honing their crafts, building things to earn money, etc. In the Matrix there's no need to do any of that. Want money? Want a car? Need weapons? Call the operator!
I'm presuming you'd be playing a rebel. The rebels don't really spend much time in the Matrix. They go in, do what they need to do and get out. They don't wander around much because once the agents find out where they are, it just becomes a chase since since no-one except Neo can out-fight them.
Great movies but I have my doubts about its viability as a MMORPG.
Where does The Matrix Online take place?
The Matrix Online takes place within the Matrix. No "real world" game play will take place. Characters in The Matrix online will be logged into the Matrix and aboard a hovercraft at broadcast depth.
When does the game take place?
The Matrix Online timeline takes place after The Matrix Revolutions, the third Matrix movie.
Had to type that out due to their liberal use of flash
Upon rewatching Matrix Reloaded, had a question about the scene where Bane gets turned into Agent Smith. Bane and another rebel are about to exit the Matrix. Bane hands the rebel a circuit board/disk from the Oracle and says that they must get it out. Later, the rebels hand Neo the circuit board/disk in Zion.
How did they transfer an object from the Matrix to the real world? I know they can create objects like guns, etc to put inside the Matrix but how did they get the item from the Oracle out?

Been using Mozilla Mail as my primary mail client since 1.3 (now using 1.3.1). Bayesian filter is great. However, I've had a problem where the junk mail is recognized as junk but is not automatically moved to the junk mail folder. Can't seem to fix this no matter what settings I change.
I looked at the latest release notes and didn't see anything about this being fixed. Anyone else experience this problem/have a solution?

I seem to remember there being a Hobbit musical or play, not sure which. I watched it a while ago. It wasn't very good. Hopefully a LOTR musical will be better.

(Super) Mario
The entire cast of Street Fighter 2 characters
Rockman/Megaman
Link from Zelda
Pokemon (not for me, but the kiddies like it)
These ones are truly iconic/memorable. Esp the Street Fighter characters who had a whole backstory which you found out when you finished the game.
Here are the books I've found most helpful on MySQL (and using MySQL with other things):
