  1. Re:Creating artificial drugs on Creating Artificial Proteins · · Score: 1

The thing is, they're not so much patenting the particular organism as much as the specific genetic sequencing they've done to the host to produce whatever protein they're after.

It costs billions of dollars worth of investment to set up the lab conditions, hire the researchers, test, retest, and maybe sacrifice a chicken or two to Jobu to even come up with ONE protein with any kind of pharmaceutical benefits. Not only that, but now you've gotta make sure you can obtain enough of this thing to sell, purify it, make sure you can keep its structure stable, etc....Now if it were me, I'd be sure as hell to grab an airtight patent after all that.

Hell, just look at AMGEN. They hit a homerun with their EPO manufacturing process and now they're one of the biggest biotech firms in the world. And they're only one of a few firms that actually have an actually product out on the market. Most of these biotech firms are praying that they can ge through clinical trials so they can actually start making some money on all their investments.

  2. Battery issue? on New iPod Design Pictures Leak · · Score: 0, Troll

  3. Some fairly obvious uses on Surfing on a Surfboard · · Score: 1

To all those that are wondering what uses this has, the thing has an onboard webcam which can broadcast from the surfer's point of view riding the wave. Granted, the same thing could be done with the surfer holding a camera to shoot with, I could see the possibilities of some interesting footage from this board. Depending on configuration, being able to see the tube from the surf board level would be pretty cool all by itself. Is spending all that money to put all that equipment in a board practical? Nope. Is it cool? Hell yeah, and hang ten dude!

Anyone know if there's any patches that'll be available so that you can save to the HDD ingame? I know that Xenosaga and many other games had this feature stripped out when they crossed the pond.

  6. Is this right? on Comcast Cuts Infected PCs' Network Connections · · Score: 3, Interesting

Are these guys even allowed to do this based on the user agreement they get their subscribers to sign? I'm sure most of these computers that get hijacked are used by Joe Somebody who probably has no idea that his computer has been hijacked. If Comcast and other ISPs are so keen on cutting off access to spammers, why not provide a firewall and antivirus programs along with their subscriptions? I'm sure it'd cost them a pidly amount and wouldn't really be all that hard to work out a deal with these software vendors to bundle them into the deal. Maybe I'm way off base here but it just doesn't sound right to just cut off acess.

You'd think that human evolution would've at least carried us to the point where such measures weren't needed but look at the state of the world.

So, if they can be put to good use, I'll deal with the jibblies and pray that the next such kidnapping case doesn't end in such tragedy.

These newer cards just don't seem to be worth the money they're asking for if that's all the performance you'll get, not counting the quality cut from not enabling all the latest "features" like FSAA and Anisotropic filtering.

Let me tell ya, Disney Land is a whole lot more enjoyable when there's absolutely no lines for anything. My friends and I got a bunch of pennies and turned MTWR into a coin shooting range. Really, at this point in time, I see all the p2p software as market forces at work anyways. I mean, just HOW many years has it been since RIAA sued Napster into oblivion?? In all this time, they've yet to come out with any kind of viable alternative for people to be able to acquire music over the internet. Had they rolled out a viable service after the shutdown of Napster, I'm sure most people would've been happy to switch over but due to RIAA's complacency through the years, p2p has come in to fill that void and there's simply no stopping the effects at this point. I know that I'll never buy another album published by a RIAA label since their current actions have completely eroded any desire for me to fund their campaign to ruin people's lives just to keep some corporate shirts rolling in their bling bling and to continue to pump out more Britney Aguilera drivel.
