The thing is, they're not so much patenting the particular organism as much as the specific genetic sequencing they've done to the host to produce whatever protein they're after.
It costs billions of dollars worth of investment to set up the lab conditions, hire the researchers, test, retest, and maybe sacrifice a chicken or two to Jobu to even come up with ONE protein with any kind of pharmaceutical benefits. Not only that, but now you've gotta make sure you can obtain enough of this thing to sell, purify it, make sure you can keep its structure stable, etc....Now if it were me, I'd be sure as hell to grab an airtight patent after all that.
Hell, just look at AMGEN. They hit a homerun with their EPO manufacturing process and now they're one of the biggest biotech firms in the world. And they're only one of a few firms that actually have an actually product out on the market. Most of these biotech firms are praying that they can ge through clinical trials so they can actually start making some money on all their investments.
I've been thinking about picking an ipod up for a while now but have been kept from doing so by all the negative press about the dead battery issue and the high replacement costs. Has Apple done anything about that yet and how much is it to replace the battery nowadays?
To all those that are wondering what uses this has, the thing has an onboard webcam which can broadcast from the surfer's point of view riding the wave. Granted, the same thing could be done with the surfer holding a camera to shoot with, I could see the possibilities of some interesting footage from this board. Depending on configuration, being able to see the tube from the surf board level would be pretty cool all by itself.
Is spending all that money to put all that equipment in a board practical? Nope.
Is it cool? Hell yeah, and hang ten dude!
I seem to remember a gradeschool experiment where we mixed cornstarch and water in a pan and tried to slap it. Thanks to the starch, the stuff would just kinda slap you back. Is this body armor kinda doing the same thing then?
The HDD would be a much better investment for me if more games supported it over here. From what I understand, many games released here have had the HDD save feature removed by SCEA. Anyone know if there's any patches that'll be available so that you can save to the HDD ingame? I know that Xenosaga and many other games had this feature stripped out when they crossed the pond.
Are these guys even allowed to do this based on the user agreement they get their subscribers to sign? I'm sure most of these computers that get hijacked are used by Joe Somebody who probably has no idea that his computer has been hijacked. If Comcast and other ISPs are so keen on cutting off access to spammers, why not provide a firewall and antivirus programs along with their subscriptions? I'm sure it'd cost them a pidly amount and wouldn't really be all that hard to work out a deal with these software vendors to bundle them into the deal. Maybe I'm way off base here but it just doesn't sound right to just cut off acess.
What is the world coming to? A Microsoft OS running on Apple hardware to develope games? Isn't that the equivalent of mixing matter and anti-matter together or something? Maybe I just need to sleep.
True they won't stop the actions of those with the intention of commiting said crimes. However, anything that'll help to solve those crimes and allow justice to be carried out on those who commit those crimes can't be a bad thing can it? You'd think that human evolution would've at least carried us to the point where such measures weren't needed but look at the state of the world.
I'm not a big fan of the thought of cameras on street corners watching my actions. In fact, the thought alone gives me the jibblies. However, the recent arrest of the Carlie Brucia kidnapper at least gives some credence to the usefulness of these things. So, if they can be put to good use, I'll deal with the jibblies and pray that the next such kidnapping case doesn't end in such tragedy.
Heh, I remember some of those pissing matches pretty well also. I remember when Mortal Kombat was released for both systems and the Sega fanboys touting the blood thus earning them a point.
Then Street Fighter II came out and the SNES fanboys shouting from the rooftops about how they got the superior system.
(Note: these events not in chronological order because I'm too old now to remember what happened when) Ahhh, good times.
[ 2nd Note: I was a SNES fanboy myself:) ]
Heh, I used to get a kick outta listening to Duke belting out some "Bornnnn to be wwwiiiillld" on that karaoke mike across the room from the stripper. I know, sad.
The fbucks feature was pretty interesting to me. Being able to see just how much performance you can get for the price for all these cards definitely helps to narrow the field somewhat. These newer cards just don't seem to be worth the money they're asking for if that's all the performance you'll get, not counting the quality cut from not enabling all the latest "features" like FSAA and Anisotropic filtering.
I don't know where you lived around the D.C. area but when I lived in Bethesda, I never had more than a 20 minute commute using the trains there. Plus the walking after disembarking the train definitely was a plus. Hell, I've gained 25 extra pounds since moving away because I don't walk nearly as much to where I need to go.
That'd be true if we were talking bout a soccer game.... Although I guess SF Giants Fans count in the hooligan dept. Man, what is it about the Bay Area....
One of my fondest memories of MTWR was my 8th grade year. Being the studious young man, all the students in Southern California who were in the honor society were treated to a special night in Disney Land where they shut the park down for us. Let me tell ya, Disney Land is a whole lot more enjoyable when there's absolutely no lines for anything. My friends and I got a bunch of pennies and turned MTWR into a coin shooting range. Bonus points if you could bounce the coin back to yourself off of the train at the end. Ahhh, good times, good times.
but it looks like this is the deathknell for the N-Gage already. The only thing it had going for it as a gaming system was the much touted wireless multiplayer gaming. Now that Nintendo has added the feature to the Game Boy, the only thing that the N-Gage is relegated to is an overpriced cellphone.
Really, at this point in time, I see all the p2p software as market forces at work anyways. I mean, just HOW many years has it been since RIAA sued Napster into oblivion?? In all this time, they've yet to come out with any kind of viable alternative for people to be able to acquire music over the internet. Had they rolled out a viable service after the shutdown of Napster, I'm sure most people would've been happy to switch over but due to RIAA's complacency through the years, p2p has come in to fill that void and there's simply no stopping the effects at this point. I know that I'll never buy another album published by a RIAA label since their current actions have completely eroded any desire for me to fund their campaign to ruin people's lives just to keep some corporate shirts rolling in their bling bling and to continue to pump out more Britney Aguilera drivel.
Has the good the good Dr. Jane Goodall been doing down there with all her research? Do not let the insanity continue good Doctor, leave the apes alone!
City of The Lost Children? Older game based on a surreal french movie which didn't get too much exposure. The game was actually excellent for its time and managed to capture the feel and mood of the movie quite well. One of the few movie based games which was actually like the movie.
Use a variation of the old banana throwing game to get the robot to throw the ball? Man I wish I could remember the name of that game right now. Couldn't get enough of it when I first got my computer ages ago.
Could it be the beginnings of Senator Hatche's p2p Destroying scheme? Even though the ip's being queried belong to non-existent sites, I can't help but picture the following paraphrased scene (Note all lines are terribly penned and from year old memory):
Darth Hatch: Tell me where the rebels are located your highness.
Princess ISP: I've already given you 5 names. I'll never tell you the rest!!
Darth Hatch: Then perhaps you'd like a demonstration of the full capabilities of our Pirate Death Star.
Princess ISP: Alright, they're at 66.432.2322
And so on and so forth
Considering the recent media frenzy over Martha Stewart's case regarding insider trading, this really shouldn't come as much of a surprise. They're only trying to cover their own ass by having records for evidence if any insider trading information is being passed along with these instant messaging programs.

I couldn't help but think this has got to be a joke upon first reading the article... All I've gotta say is this cannot end well.

Unfortunately, it is encoded region 2. Here's to hoping they'll release it here.

Didn't they ever watch Popeye??? The only way to defeat Brutus is to eat a can of spinach!!!!! Oh wait....or was it Bluto? Damn, nevermind.
